Turkey hopes Russia will not use its right to veto on a potential resolution UN Council bid on Syrian gas attack

Turkey has expressed hopes that Russia will not use its right to veto on a potential resolution at the United Nations Security Council following a deadly gas attack, allegedly conducted by the Syrian army, around Idlib that killed around 100 civilians. “I hope the Russians won’t veto decisions taken by the U.N. Security Council”, Deputy Prime Minister and government spokesman Numan Kurtulmuş told a TV channel in the Black Sea province of Ordu late on April 4. He added that he hoped the Security Council would take effective action this time.

A policeman killed, another wounded in western Baghdad bomb blast

A policeman was killed and another one was wounded when an explosive device exploded in an area west of Baghdad. The bomb was planted on the side of a road in Rafoush area, west of the capital, and went off when the police patrol was passing by, according to the sources. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) has said that violence in the country lef 1115 casualties, excluding security members, during March. Baghdad was the second most affected province with 84 deaths and 246 injuries, according to the organization’s monthly casualty count. It excludes death toll among security members after Iraqi authorities had asked to get such information exclusively from security commands.

The Brussels Conference: it will address the situation in Syria and the impact of the crisis in the region

The Brussels Conference brings together ministerial representatives from over 70 delegations, including from the EU and the region but also the wider international community, the United Nations, major donors and civil society, humanitarian and development organisations. It will address the situation in Syria and the impact of the crisis in the region. The conference will assess where the international community stands collectively in fulfilling commitments made at the London Conference in February 2016 and agree on additional efforts needed to meet the needs of those affected by the crisis. Discussions will also focus on how the international community can support a lasting political resolution to the Syrian conflict through an inclusive and Syrian-led political transition process based on the Security Council resolutions.

Yemeni Foreign Minister Sharaf discusses with UN Coordinator worsening humanitarian situation in Yemen

During a meeting between the Yemeni Foreign Minister Sharaf and the UN Resident Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen McGoldrick, they discussed the worsening humanitaria situation in the country and the targeting of the port of Hodeida. The discussion led to the need of intervention of the United Nations and international actors to end the suffering of Yemeni employees, subjected to the policy of starvation by the aggression and the mercenaries. Concerning the port of Hodeida, the Foreign Minister underlined the importance of its safety due to its key role in accepting humanitarian needs for Yemeni people, as McGoldrick also did. The Minister also underlined the efforts made by the National Salvation Government to achieve peace and end the suffering of the Yemeni citizens.

UN Secretary-General Guterres meets with Iraqi Kurdish officials

Iraq’s Kurdistan region, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Iraqi Kurdistan capital city of Erbil on Thursday to meet with senior Kurdish officials. “A referendum will be held in the near future”, on the Kurdistan Region’s independence, Barzani said during meeting with Guterres as cited by KDP media. There is good military and security cooperation between Peshmerga and Iraqi forces which resulted in huge victories”, he added. Guterres reportedly expressed the U.N.’s support for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq to restore peace to areas IS from where IS was expelled. Guterres said the international community “has not done enough” to help the Kurdistan Region in sheltering internally displaced people.

Yemen expresses disappointment at Arab Summit outcomes

Following the Arab Summit held at the Dead Sea in Jordan a Foreign Ministry official expressed disappointment on the outcomes of the final statement of the Summit, which according to him ignored the peace process in Yemen and the daily killing of Yemeni civilians by the Saudi-led aggression coalition. The official added that the United Nations Security Council resolution 2216 legitimized the the Saudi-led aggression coalition war and their anti-humanitarian crimes in the country. In fine according to the yemeni official the Arab League has stood against the Yemeni people too.

UNDP: more than 50,000 civilians were killed or injured by the war in Yemen

During a press conference on Tuesday in Sana’a the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Repesentative for Yemen McGoldrick said that two years of war destroyed the lives of millions of people and that seven million women, children and men could be victims of famine during this year. He added that more than 50,000 civilians were killed or injured or disabled by the war, and in particular 1450 children were killed, 2450 were injured and 1572 were recruited to fight. Moreover 50,000 people were displaced and 2 million people displaced across the country. In fine McGoldrick said that the Yemenis are victims of a conflict that has nothing to do with them and that the belligerent parties acted in a way to disregard their responsabilities.

Sewehli calls on Italy to push for international criminal proceedings against Hafter and the LNA for alleged war crimes

The head of the State Council, Abdulrahman Sewehli, had called on Italy, along with the European Union, the UN Security Council and the International Criminal Court, to take action against war crimes allegedly committed in Benghazi by the Libya National Army led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. These accusations are referring to recent violences from Haftar troops.
