Geagea met Girard, Representative for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), for tackle refugee affairs

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea met on Monday in Meerab with the Representative for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Lebanon Mireille Girard, accompanied by her Lebanese affairs’ Advisor, Dominique Tohme, with talks reportedly touching on the current situation of Syrian displaced people in Lebanon and the need to assist them pending their safe return to their homeland. Talks also touched on UNHCR’s assistance in support of the infrastructure of Lebanon as a country hosting at home about a million and a half Syrian refugees.

Hariri asks Bassil to inform UNSC about Israeli threats

The President of the Council of Ministers Saad Hariri chaired this afternoon at the Grand Serail a meeting of the Council of ministers, a statement by the Prime Minister’s office indicated on Monday.  Although the session was dedicated to the discussion of the draft budget, Prime Minister Hariri said at the beginning of the meeting: “The repeated threats by officials in the Israeli government, and in the media, against the civilians in Lebanon and their legitimate institutions and infrastructure aim at covering up Israel’s constant violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, while Lebanon abides by it and calls for its full implementation”. He added: “I ask the Foreign minister (GebranBassil) to prepare a list of these Israeli official stances announced in the media, and prepare a detailed letter about them to the UN Security Council so that the international community shoulders its responsibility in facing this deliberate tautening and this unconcealed threat to regional stability”.

The United Nations Security Council concerned about chemical weapons reports in Iraq

The United Nations Security Council was briefed behind closed doors on the situation in Mosul  by U.N. aid chief Stephen O’Brien and U.N. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Kim Won-soo that Islamic State  had used chemical weapons in Mosul, where the militants are fighting an offensive by U.S.-backed Iraqi forces to retake the city. The talks aim to reach a political solution to a conflict which erupted in March 2011 and has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced many millions.

Yemen govt: Roadmap only way to peace

On Thursday President Hadi and UN envoy Cheikh Ahmed arrived in Riyadh to discuss key elements of an agreement for a peace roadmap to guarantee a transition to normalcy in the country. Ahmed is trying to continue the political process in accordance with Gulf Cooperation Council sponsored initiative and the United Nations Security Council resolution 2216. The roadmap should deal necessarily with GCC initiative of peace, the National Dialogue outputs and the UN Security Council’s resolutions ( resolution 2216 and Chapter VII of the UN Charter). Moreover to discuss the latest developments in the political,security and humanitarian areas in Yemen Cheikh Ahmed, the Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Al-Zayani and Saudi Foreign Minister Al-Jubeir also met in Riyadh.

Damascus calls on UN to oblige Turkey to withdraw its troops from Syrian territory.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry has sent complaints to the UN Secretary-General and UN Security Council President over the Turkish army’s continuing “aggression” against the war-torn country, the SANA news agency reported Friday. In its letters, the ministry also demanded from the UN and the international community to oblige Turkey to withdraw its troops from Syrian territory.

UN Organization in Human Rights ask Commission of enquiry on the violence committed against the civilians in DRC

The High-Commissioner of the UN Organization in Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ Ad Al Hussein asked for the establishment of a Commission of enquiry on the violence committed against the civilians in DRC, after the discovery of three mass graves in Grand Kasai. The High Commissioner declared in front of the Council that his office will attentively watch the judicial development concerning the actions of the security forces which caused the death of more than 100 people between September and December. Moreover he complain too about the fact that no real progress has been made within the agreement concluded on December 31th 2016 between the Government and the opposition. The arrangement plans that president Joseph Kabila ( whose mandate ended in December 2016) will stay for an additional year. In return the Opposition has to rule a government of transition until the new election, planned at the end of 2017. In last februaryMr Hussein asked DCR to out an end to the “massive violation of Human Rights” and the massive executions committed bu its armed forces. Since september 2016 Grand Kasai is the theatre of a rebellion caused by the conflict between the village Chief KamwinaNsapu and the central power. This pushed the State to send armed forces of DCR where there was the risk of conflict, even massacring peaceful defenseless villagers.

Yemen: National authorities in Sana'a that refused to receive experts of the UN sanctions committee

In a statement to SABA an official of the Foreign Ministry denied reports made by aggression media such as Al-Arabiya and al-Hadath about national authorities in Sana’a that refused to receive experts of the UN sanctions committee. Moreover the Foreign Ministry official said that Yemeni Foreign Ministry use official diplomatic channels to be in contact and to deal with the requests of the United Nations and the foreign diplomatic mission. In fine the official renewed the call to the United Nations to lift Chapter VII against Yemen, which is considered a foreign intervention into Yemen internal affairs.

UN to facilitate repatriation of Malaysian staff in North Korea

The United Nations will assist to smoothen the process of bringing out two of its staff, who are Malaysian citizens, from North Korea. A UN source in New York told Bernama that the two women, who are in their 30s, were contacted as soon as the travel ban notice on Malaysians in North Korea issued by Pyongyang was reported by the international media. Both are safe. They are not officers or staff of the Malaysian Embassy.“They are our staff (UN) who were sent to North Korea to attend a course related to the World Food Programme (WFP)”, the source said.

From February 27 to March 2 the Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Commission to the UN hosted a senior delegation of military experts in New York to restore legitimacy in Yemen. The experts were from the Security Council, UN officials and representatives of international and humanitarian organizations besides the Saudi Ambassador to the UN Al-Moallimi. Experts held several meetings that were also attended by John Ging, operations director of UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and representatives of UNICEF, the World Bank and the World Food Program. The meetings focused on coalition objectives and achievements and promoted security and stability in Yemen. Another key point was fighting terrorism in the country and in the region and the experts also pointed to rebel use of children and others civilians as human shields.

Lebanon: Aoun’s stance towards Hezbollah arms could result in UNIFIL withdrawal

Ambassadors of 6 major countries sounded the alarm Friday over President Michel Aoun’s latest statements about Hezbollah’s arms, amid threats that the the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon or UNIFIL could withdraw its peacekeeping mission from south Lebanon. A meeting was held on February 15 at the United Nations headquarters in Yarze. It included ambassadors of the International Support Group for Lebanon, the US, France, Britain, Germany, Italy and China in addition to the EU ambassador and Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Lebanon and Arab League Representative. The meeting addressed three main issues: The upcoming parliamentary elections and the new electoral law, the security situation in Lebanon including backing the Lebanese Army, the International Brussels Conference on the Syrian crisis and the Syrian refugees in Lebanon.Talks highlighted the latest statement of Aoun during an official visit to Egypt, during which they said does not abide by resolution 1701, but merely reflects visions of a single Lebanese party. The US ambassador has however, revealed a tendency to pull the UNIFIL forces from southern Lebanon if the country does not abide by international conventions.
