Iran steps up support for Houthis in Yemen's war.

Sources with knowledge of military movements declared Iran is sending advanced weapons and military adviser’s to Yemen’s Houthis and is taking a greater role in the civil war in Yemen. A senior Iranian official Major General Qassem Soleimani, commander of the Qods Forces, met top IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) offcials last month to look at ways to empower the Houthis through trainings, arms and financial support. Even if Iran rejects the accusations from Saudi Arabia, there are informations and evidence that the Iranians are smuggling weapons into the area and it is known that winning the battle in Yemen will help define the balance of power in the Middle East. Iran’s plan is to create a Hezbollah-like militia in Yemen and encircle the Saudis, reason why some Sunni Muslim countries in the Middle East were alarmed by Iran’s activities. A source also said Iran is sending weapons in Yemen using ships directly or via Somalia, bypassing coalition’s efforts to intercepts shipsment and once the ships arrive in the region, the cargoes are transferred to small fishing boats, very hard to spot.

During the meeting chaired by King Salman, the Cabinet renewed Saudi Arabia’s condemnation of Syrian air attacks on UN humanitarian aid convoys, that led to the suspension of assistance in the country. The Cabinet also expressed concern on war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the regime,ita allies and militias against Syrian people. Moreover the EU on Monday imposed sanctions against four senior Syrian military officials accused of using chemical weapons on civilians and also targeted Syrian companies accused of manufacturing them. The four military officials will be banned from travelling to the EU. In fine EU sanctions also include an oil embargo, restrictions on investments, a freeze of Syrian central bank assets and a ban on exports of equipment and technology that could be used against civilians

China, Saudi Arabia eye $65bn in deals.

On the first day of visit of King Salman to Beijing he oversaw the signing of deals potentially worth $65 billion and that for chinese foreign affairs analysts is a “win-win” situation for both countries. The deals consist of 35 projects that include covering productive capacity, trade, space industry, new energy and education. Moreover, as Dr. Degang Sun of the Institute of Shangai International Studies University said, “the two sides’ econmies are supplementary to each other” and this is proved by China’s “One Belt,One Road Initiative” and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which are two strategies compatible to each other. Concerning these strategies, China perceives Saudi Arabia as the principal state in implementing its strategy and Saudi Arabia will enhance the diversification and industrialization of the Saudi economy in the next decade with China’s investments and trade. He also said Saudi Arabia is “looking east” and China is “looking west”.

After concluding his visit to Japan by attending the closing session of the Forum on the Business vision between Saudi Arabia and Japan 2030, King Salman arrived to China on Wednesday, the fifth destination of his asian tour. The Forum discussed ways to achieve the executive programs following Kingdom Vision 2030 and to promote trade and investments between Saudi Arabia and Japan in the presence of many Saudi and Japanese business men. Saudi King Salman and the Japanese Prime Minister also signed notes and programs of cooperation in the field of industrial revolution and a Memorandum of Cooperation on the Implementation of the Japanese Saudi Vision for 2030.

Saudi deputy crown prince heads to US for official visit, set to meet Trump

Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Crown Prince and Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman will start on Thursday his official trip in the US and will meet President Trump and senior US officials to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss of regional issues of mutual interest, such as global energy prices, conflicts in Syria where Saudi Arabia is part of a US-led coalition bombing campaign against the Daesh group, Iraq, Lybia and Yemen where a Saudi-led coalition backed by Washington has been bombing Iran-backed Shiite rebels for two years. No information were given about when he will meet Trump but he will be the first Gulf Arab royal to meet the president since his inauguration.

Italy's foreign affairs undersecretary sees 'political solution' to Yemen crisis

During his two-days visit in Riyadh and Jeddah, the italian undersecretary of state met with the UN special envoy for Yemen Cheikh Ahmed and the Secretary General fo the GCC Al-Zayani. Concerning this meeting the undersecretary said in an exclusive interview with Arab News, that “the meeting was to confirm our common work on creating a political order in the Middle East that is now shaken by conflict”. He also added that Italy thinks that the base is in the Kuwait dialogue when the UN proposed a solution that the Houthis did not accept and that Italy stands for political negotiation because other means cost much more and cost human lives. During the interview the undersecretary also talked about the refugees crisis, in particular Syrian ones, and the necessity not only to host them in Europe or in Italy but also to stop the conflict and rebuild the country. Moreover he expressed Italy’s position about Lybia and its efforts to find an internal Lybian political agreement based on the UNSC resolution 259 and to invest in the countries in Africa from which the migrants are running away. In fine the undersecretary discussed launching the Saudi-Italian joint commission to boost the collaboration at an economic and business level with Saudi Arabia, which is Italy’s first economic partner in the MENA region.

Pakistani troops to guard Saudi borders against Houthi attacks

Pakistan will send combat troops to protect Saudi Arabia’s southern borders from attacks by Houthis in Yemen, reported Middle East Eye citing senior security sources. The Pakistani brigade will only be deployed inside the southern borders of the kingdom. “It will not be used beyond Saudi borders,” an insider told the Gulf-based newspaper. The move follows a visit by Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa to Saudi Arabia in December last year. The army chief had been on a three-day visit to the kingdom where he met Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz. “COAS reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to the security and protection of the Holy Mosques and also the territorial integrity of the kingdom”, Inter-Services Public Relations said in a statement.

Hajj official: Mina tragedy main topic of current talks with Saudi Arabia

About 500 Iranian pilgrims were killed during a stampede in 2015 Hajj annual congregation when, according to reports, two large groups of pilgrims arrived together at a crossroads in Mina, a few kilometres east of Mecca, on their way to performing the ‘Stoning of the Devil’ ritual at Jamarat. Pilgrims cannot perform their great religious duty in 2016 due to sabotage of the Saudi officials who not only did not apologize for their mismanagement of Hajj in 2015, but also failed to meet expectations of the Iranian side for resumption of sending the Iranian pilgrims for Hajj rituals.

Iran thanks China for readiness to mediate in Saudi dispute

Iran’s embassy in Beijing commended the Chinese government for its preparedness to mediate between Tehran and Riyadh, saying Iran has not still given up the hope that Saudis would realize the need for détente with the neighbors and contribute to regional security and stability.In a statement released on Friday, Iran’s embassy in Beijing welcomed China’s readiness to play a constructive role in the Middle East region. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said he hopes Saudi Arabia and Iran can resolve their differences through “equal and friendly consultations”, adding, “China is friends with both Saudi Arabia and Iran. If there is a need, China is willing to play our necessary role”.

King Salman’s tour in Asia continued in Brunei and this visit will strengthen bilateral relations in political, religious and economic fields. As the Saudi Ambassador to Brunei Hisham bin Abdul Aziz said this visit is the first visit ever by a Saudi monarch since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1992. The ambassador also said the visit shows the intention to enhance cooperation for mutual benefit and moreover that the sultanate of Brunei is strategically located, is a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and is an influential member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Due to all these reasons Brunei is very important to Saudi Arabia, especially to attract investements and to support the Kingdom’s partnership with ASEAN, which will help to achieve Saudi Vision 2030.
