Iraqi forces’ operation to clear Mosul from Daesh proceeds slowly but is advancing with success

BreakingNews @en di

Iraqi armed forces are advancing with great success to clear the entire city of Mosul from Daesh, said the Chief in Command, but the operation proceeds slowly because the Forces want to preserve the lives of citizens, otherwise the victory and the liberation of Mosul would be achieved for much less time.
All of this has been discussed during a meeting with President of the Republic, Dr. Fuad Masum, at the Peace Palace in Baghdad on Wednesday with the Special Representative the Secretary-General of United Nations in Iraq, Jan Kubiš.
He praised the victories achieved by the Iraqi forces against terrorism, pointing out that all the reports received by the International Organization confirm the happiness of civilians in the liberated areas and that people are greeting the army as liberators.

Turkey will not withdraw its troops from Bashiqa military camp in northern Iraq until the end of the Mosul offensive against the Islamic State, said a Turkish source. Delegations from Turkey and Iraq will convene in a couple of months to discuss the modalities of a future withdrawal,“There is a verbal agreement in mind and the Iraqi administration is aware that our troops are not permeant there, but they have to consider public opinion in Iraq,” the official said, adding that the parties will not sign an agreement in the near feature.

Seventy percent of east Mosul freed from Islamic State

“Roughly 65-70 percent of the eastern side has been liberated,” said Lieutenant General Talib Shaghati, who is also head of the elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) spearheading the campaign to retake the northern city. “I think in the coming few days we will see the full liberation of the eastern side” he added. The western half of the city remains under the full control of Islamic State. The presence of large numbers of civilians on the battlefield has restricted Iraqi forces’ use of artillery but the cooperation of residents has also helped them targeting the militants. Iraqi officials expressed hope that residents would rise up against Islamic State, accelerating the group’s demise in the city. But mass executions seem to have discouraged widespread resistance.“Daesh (Islamic State) devised many plans to obstruct and block us but they failed. We were able to surpass them and these areas were liberated with high speed,” Shaghati said.

3 months to rout Islamic State

The Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi have said on Tuesday it would take three more months to rout Islamic State, as U.S.-backed forces battle to dislodge the militants from the stronghold of Mosul.“The Americans were very pessimistic. They used to talk about a really long period but the remarkable successes achieved by our brave and heroic fighters reduced that. I foresee that in Iraq it will take three months.” More than two months into the operation, elite Iraqi soldiers have retaken a quarter of Mosul. Besides Mosul, Islamic State still controls the towns of Tel Afar and Qaim as well as Hawija and the surrounding area. The fall of Mosul would probably end Islamic State’s ambition for a self-styled caliphate, but the fighters could still mount a more traditional insurgency in Iraq, and plot or inspire attacks on the West.

Fake funeral organized by group militants to carry out bombs in eastern Mosul

Deadly bombings in eastern Mosul on Kokjali area, which was declared IS-free two months ago, were reportedly carried out with three booby-trapped vehicles driven by ISIS’s members. The bombs were carried out using a security loophole as army forces failed to scrutinize a fake funeral organized by group militants. They left at least 30 dead, including army soldiers, and 60 wounded, according to security sources quoted by the media but how the suiciders managed to enter in the area was not clear until the rights commission gave its account. “The group used army forces’ failure to search a fake funeral they set on from the neighboring IS-held al-Quds district,”   said the commission.

The battle to retake Mosul could actually take longer

BreakingNews @en di

“Those who believe that battle in Mosul is going to end quickly are deluded,” have admitted Al-Hashd al-Shaabi militia. The battle to retake the city of Mosul from Islamic State, which has entered its second month, could actually take longer despite Iraqi officials optimism with a close victory. The operations have slowed down over the past few days due to bad weather conditions and ferocious resistance from IS combatants who rely on explosive traps and suicide bombings.
