President Erdogan explained his statements on President Abbas to his counterpart Vladimir Putin

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan explained his comments about a plan to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, the RIA news agency cited Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov as saying on Thursday. Erdogan said earlier this week his forces in Syria were there to topple Assad, a statement which came as a surprise to Moscow. Ushakov gave no details about what kind of explanation Erdogan provided.

A “weapon pipeline” from Iran to Somalia and Yemen was found by International investigators

International investigators have found a suspected “weapon pipeline” from Iran through Somalia to Yemen where Shiite rebels are battling the government, according to a report released on Wednesday. The analysis by Conflict Armament Research (CAR) is based on the seizure in February and March this year of weapons from dhows, traditional sailing vessels, in the Arabian Sea. Although their findings were “relatively limited”, the investigators said their analysis “suggests the existence of a weapon pipeline extending from Iran to Somalia and Yemen”. It said that traffickers offload weapons in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland in northern Somalia “for local arms markets or as transhipment points for onward supply to Yemen”.

The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday adopted a new sanctions resolution against North Korea, ramping up earlier punitive measures following the reclusive country’s fifth and largest nuclear test in September. The 17-page resolution was unanimously adopted by the 15-member council after the text was settled upon in protracted negotiations between the United States, its author, and China, the North’s closest ally and major trading partner.

According to Pakistan, India deployed one million troops in Jammu and Kashmir

Pakistan said on Wednesday that India has deployed one million troops in Jammu and Kashmir, which is the highest concentration of soldiers in the world at one place. Foreign Office spokesperson Nafees Zakaria said the presence of Indian troops in such a “large scale was a hurdle in implementing the UN resolution” on Kashmir. The spokesman alleged that since the last four months, Indian troops have “killed innocent Kashmiris and violated basic human rights”.

Moscow would like Syria’s Aleppo situation to be resolved by end of 2016

Mikhail Bugdanov,  Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, affirmed that Moscow hopes to resolve the situation in Aleppo by the end of the year. According to Russian Defense Minister, this week brought a breakthrough for the Russian-backed Syrian drive to retake eastern Aleppo, allowing humanitarian relief to be brought in to tens of thousands of civilians living in the recaptured districts. On Monday, the Russian-run Syria Reconciliation Center reported that more than 500 fighters in Aleppo chose to surrender to the advancing Syrian Army. Russian Reconciliation Center also noted that 3,179 people, including 1,519 children have left eastern Aleppo through the ‘humanitarian corridors’ set up by Syrian government forces. This week, Damascus stepped up its siege on eastern Aleppo, a city that for years has been split between government troops and militant forces. The Syrian Army is targeting Al-Nusra Front and other radical militants. The operation put a strain on the ability of armed groups to prevent civilians from fleeing areas under their control. Previously, some of the terrorist groups controlling eastern Aleppo, like Al-Qaeda off-shoot Al-Nusra Front, used deadly force to stop civilians trying to escape.

Turkish President Reccep Tayyip Erdogan fuelled Russia’s reservations concerning Ankara’s goals in Syria. In a speech he gave at a conference in Istanbul the Turkish President stated that “the reason for the presence of the Turkish Armed Forces in Syria is to overthrow the tyrant Bashar Al Assad who exercises state terrorism. We did not intrude for any other reason.” This statement provoked an immediate reaction from Moscow which supports the Syria regime.
