Emperor of Japan receives King Salman

During his visit to Japan King Salman received a Daisy High Medal from Emperor Akihito of Japan in appreciation of his role as “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques”. The Emperor also hosted a special luncheon in honor of King Salman, who also met on Monday Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The two talked on ways to strengthen strategic and economic bilateral ties and the two sides also agreed to launch a study on setting up special economic zones in Saudi Arabia to attract Japanese investments by easing regulations and customs procedures. King Salman’s nex stop will be China, where he will be from Wednesday.

 

Abe and Saudi King Salman have signed economic cooperation of oil

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz on Monday signed a document regarding cooperation to help end the Saudi Arabian economy’s dependence on oil. The two leaders also agreed to cooperate for the stability of the Middle East, calling each other “strategic partners” during a meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office. The document for cooperation lists nine priority areas for diversifying the Saudi Arabian economy, such as the entertainment and media industries, and infrastructure.

Today King Salman arrived in Japan, the fourth country of his tour in Asia which started on February 26, and he was received at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo by Crown Prince Nahurito of Japan, Saudi Ambassador to Japan Al-Barrak and officials of the saudi embassy. His tour is the first by a Saudi king since 1971 when King Faisal visited Japan. During the visit Japan aims to strengthen relations with the Kingdom, which is Japan’s largest provider of oil exports, and to try to diversify its economy, including ways to increase japanese investments in non-energy sectors. Moreover the discussion will also focus on bilateral and regional issues, conflicts in the Middle East, Saudi.Japanese cooperation and commercial partnership, with a special reference to Saudi Aramco IPO.

Following the statement issued by the US ambassador to Yemen Tueller on Monday, which exposed Washington’s support to peace under the auspices of the United Nations and to the only solution which is through comprehensive peace negotiations in accordance with parallel political and security procedures, the Foreign Minister HishamSharaf said that this confirms what was before announced by the previous US administration. He also added that the use of peace to reach a political solution both on a Yemeni-Yemeni and a Yemeni-Saudi front, is what the Supreme Political Council and the Government of National Salvation are trying to do. Moreover the Minister called on US President Trump to prove the credibility and to stop arms deals exported to Saudi Arabia and he also called for ending logistical and intelligence support to aggression’s countries against Yemen to create a stable situation for any future peace negotiations.

In anticipation to King Salman’s visit to Japan on March 12 as part of his Asian tour, the Japanese ambassador to Saudi Arabia Norihiro Okuda said the visit main intent is to strengthen ties in different fields and for this reason the King will hold talks with top Japanese officials covering bilateral,regional (East Asia) and international issues, such as Middle East issues like Yemen and Syria. During the visit Japan will discuss with King Salman not only on economic issues but also culture and entertainment to achieve the goals set in the Saudi Vision 2030 besides security cooperation. For that reason both countries established the Joint Group for Saudi-Japn Vision 2030.

From February 27 to March 2 the Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Commission to the UN hosted a senior delegation of military experts in New York to restore legitimacy in Yemen. The experts were from the Security Council, UN officials and representatives of international and humanitarian organizations besides the Saudi Ambassador to the UN Al-Moallimi. Experts held several meetings that were also attended by John Ging, operations director of UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and representatives of UNICEF, the World Bank and the World Food Program. The meetings focused on coalition objectives and achievements and promoted security and stability in Yemen. Another key point was fighting terrorism in the country and in the region and the experts also pointed to rebel use of children and others civilians as human shields.

Jean-Yves Le Drian in Beirut, France is going to support Lebanon's military agencies

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian is expected to visit Beirut in the next days, amid reports that France will provide Lebanon with military assistance after Saudi Arabia halted its grant last year. The French minister’s visit affirms that France is going to support Lebanon’s military agencies after Saudi Arabia halted a Lebanese army grant in 2016.France has developed a plan that will be put into implementation the current year. It will see the reinforcement of Lebanon’s security forces to counter terrorism. In February 2016 Saudi Arabia halted a $3 billion program for military supplies to Lebanon in protest against Hizbullah’s policies and diplomatic stances by the Lebanese foreign ministry. The $3 billion program financed military equipment provided by France.

During the talks in Kuala Lumpur King Salman and Malaysian Prime Minister Razak announced the establishment of an international center for peace and harmony that will be named ‘King Salman Center for Global Peace’. Moreover in a joint statement the two countries stressed the need to find solutions to the conflicts in the Middle East such as in Syria and Yemen and to stop the Iranian interference in the internal affairs in the Arab countries. Concerning the project of the Center for Global Peace, the Saudi Ministry of Defense,the Center for Security and Defense at the Malaysian Ministry of Defense, the Malaysian University of Islamic Sciences and the Makkah-based Muslim World League will coordinate to complete the arrangements to implement the launch of the center in 90 days from the date of its announcement.

Four major agreements were signed by Saudi Arabia and Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on Monday. The first memorandum of understanding is related to cooperation in the trade and investement field and was signed by Minister of State Ibrahim Al-Assaf and Malysian Minister of Commerce and Industry Mustapa Mohamed. The second one includes cooperation in the field of labor and human resources. The third one concerns boosting cooperation in scientific and education sectors and the fourth one is about cooperation between SPA and National News Agency of Malaysia. During the visit there were also many ministerial meetings such as the one with the Malaysian Minister of Education and Saudi Arabia also announced more scholarships for Malaysian students due to 300 applications received last year.
