Benghazi: man converted to Christianity was arrested

The Benghazi branch of the General Administration for Criminal Investigation (also known as the Counter Crime Agency) says that it has arrested a local man who converted to Christianity. He is accused of proselytising on social media and of denigrating Islam. The arrest, announced made on the administration’s Facebook page, has been confirmed by its spokesman, Walid Arafi. The agency says that the unnamed man, who apparently converted some time ago, was using social media to urge others to change their faith. It also says that he was in contact with a fellow for convert him in Morocco, named simply as Rashid, who was helping him. There is no mention about conversion in the 2011 Constitutional Declaration which acts as Libya’s interim constitution. It declares simply that Islam is the religion of Libya, the principal source of legislation is Islamic Jurisprudence (Shari’a) and that non-Muslims are free to practice their faith. However, conversion away from Islam is wholly unacceptable to most Libyans.

MK: stop the EU's illegal Palestinian buildings

MK Oded Forer (Yisrael Beytenu) proposed a law to remove illegal building from the list of internationally immune activities, in an attempt to stop the EU’s illegal Palestinian buildings in Area C. The EU has been funding illegal Arab constructions in Area C against the signed Oslo Agreements, aiding local Arabs to slowly encroach upon land that is not theirs. Jewish Home Education Minister Naftali Bennett’s has proposed that Israel apply sovereignty over Area C and annex it. If Forer’s law passes, Israeli authorities would be able to sue the EU for illegally building Palestinian Arab structures in Area C. Forer is expected to submit his proposal in the near future.

Second attack on Tripoli's Rada: two members dead

In the second deadly attack on Tripoli’s Rada (of Deterrence) forces in just over a week, two members were shot dead on Sunday evening in a targeted attack outside a shop in the city’s central Zawiat Al-Dahmani area. According to Rada forces, Ayoub Ali Al-Buashi died instantly and Jamal Al-Shweidi died later in hospital of his injuries. Eyewitnesses say the killers were masked and used a vehicle without number plates. Insisting that it would not rest until the perpetrators had been hunted down, Rada also said that the killings would not stop it from tackling criminals and vandals. On Friday 28 October, a member named only as Kamal was killed when Rada forces demolished a house in the neighbouring Fashloum district belonging to someone described as a criminal by his force.

Illegal migration attempt in Djerba: organiser and provider arrested

Three illegal migration attempts from the island of Djerba were foiled by Coastguard last week. The latest took place on the night of Sunday, November 6, 2016. The organiser and his provider were arrested along with 11 young people who were about to sail off from Sidi Jmour (Delegation of Houmt Souk) to Italy, a security source told TAP. The alleged organiser was arrested during a search of a point of sale and repair of boat engines where two engines, compasses and GPS equipment were found. Nine other people were intercepted in two illegal migration attempts, one from Boughrara and the other from Sidi Jmour, besides the seizure of boats used for this purpose.

National Security Council: prevention, protection and monitoring will be the new strategies against terrorism

President Beji Caid Essebsi chaired, on Monday, the National Security Council meeting to assess the national and regional security situation and discuss the national strategy to fight terrorism and extremism. The latter was approved during the meeting and signed by the Head of State, according to a Presidency of the Republic press release. Prevention, protection, monitoring and response are the main axes of this strategy which has been devised in several stages with the participation of the civil society, the same source added. The meeting also offered the opportunity to discuss the cases of martyrs Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi. The President of the Republic stressed the need to “determine responsibilities and work to unveil the truth as soon as possible.”

The authority’s official spokesman, Tayseer Al-Mifrej, said “spinster” is a term given to women who are of a marrying age but are not married, and the fact is that the probability of getting married after that age becomes less viable. He added that the statistics are according to the population census that was carried in the last quarter of 2015. Family affairs consultant Dr. Muhammed Basha said: “The ratio of women remaining single is higher than among men. The key element is the prohibitively high dowry nowadays, which unfortunately, has become a phenomenon. Another reason is the high cost of weddings that have become a burden on the groom. Additionally, the high price of real estate forces both men and women to stay single.”

Thousands of protesters marched in Hong Kong on Sunday, demanding China’s central government to stay out of a political dispute in the southern Chinese city after Beijing indicated that it would intervene to deter pro-independence advocates. The dispute centers on a provocative display of anti-China sentiment by two newly elected pro-independence Hong Kong lawmakers at their swearing-in ceremony last month.

IOM repatriates 167 Nigerien migrants from southern Libya

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced yesterday that it had assisted 167 stranded Nigerien migrants including 48 women, 40 children and 79 men, to return home to Niger from southern Libya on 1 November. The IOM charter flight was coordinated in close cooperation with the Libyan authorities, the Nigerien embassy in Tripoli, its consulate in Sabha, the Libyan Red Crescent in Sabha and IOM Niger. The flight departed from Taminhint airport, 30 kilometres from Sabha and 750 kilometres south of the capital Libyan Tripoli, and arrived in Niamey airport in Niger the same evening, the IOM said. The IOM said that it had interviewed the migrants before they departed and provided health checks to ensure that they were fit to travel.

Tunisian PM visits the family of the soldier killed by terrorists last Saturday night

Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, on Sunday, asked Defence Minister Farhat Horchani to head to Kasserine to visit the family of soldier Saïd Ghozlani, who was killed by a terrorist group last Saturday night. Chahed has also instructed the Minister of Justice to offer his condolences to the family members of the martyred soldier, an official source in the office of the Prime Minister told TAP. He also gave instructions to ensure that “no effort will be spared to find the terrorists responsible for this heinous act” and tasked Minister of Health, Samira Merai with providing psychological support to the victim’s family, said the same source. A terrorist group composed of 20 individuals stormed the soldier’s home located on the side of Mount Mghilla in the town of el-Khraïfiya (Kasserine) on Saturday at around 7 p.m. and gunned him down, a source in el-Khraïfiya who requested anonymity told TAP on Sunday morning. Saïd Ghozlani, a young soldier aged 26 with the rank of sergeant, has been stationed in Medenine (South) for two years. Heavy police and military reinforcements were deployed in the region. Extensive sweeping operations are conducted across the area in search for the terrorist group, said military sources.

Ceasefire violated by Pakistani army along LoC

Two army jawans were killed and five others — two soldiers, two civilian women and a BSF officer — were injured as Pakistani army opened unprovoked firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati and Poonch sectors of Poonch district today, violating the ceasefire. In Krishna Ghati, Pakistani army opened fire in a bid to facilitate two infiltration bids, killing one soldier, an army officer said, adding that the attempts to push in infiltrators have been foiled.
