United States pushes for more sanctions, diplomacy over North Korea threats.

The Donald Trump administration is seeking to step up sanctions and pressure as its key drivers to tackle North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, while engaging the regime through diplomacy, top US officials said Wednesday.  Following a two-month review, the administration is said to have recently settled on its North Korea policy, dubbed “maximum pressure and engagement”. Trump hosted a rare closed-door briefing for all 100 senators at the White House, after which Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats issued a joint statement, vowing efforts to boost pressure on Pyongyang.

North Korea says ready to strike U.S. aircraft carrier.

North Korea said on Sunday it was ready to sink a U.S. aircraft carrier to demonstrate its military might, as two Japanese navy ships joined a U.S. carrier group for exercises in the western Pacific. U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the US Carl Vinson carrier strike group to sail to waters off the Korean peninsula in response to rising tension over the North’s nuclear and missile tests, and its threats to attack the United States and its Asian allies. The United States has not specified where the carrier strike group is as it approaches the area. U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said on Saturday it would arrive “within days” but gave no other details.

 

 

 

 

Pence says North Korea most dangerous threat.

Visiting U.S. Vice President Mike Pence reiterated the United States’ intentions to not rule out military measures against North Korea, which is pushing ahead with its nuclear and missile development, in his speech in Yokosuka on Wednesday morning. Pence made the speech aboard the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, which is stationed at the navy’s Yokosuka base in the city. Speaking to about 2,600 U.S. service members and Self-Defense Forces personnel, Pence called North Korea “the most urgent and dangerous threat to the peace and security of the Asia-Pacific region” and added that all options are on the table in dealing with Pyongyang, indicating the United States will not exclude military action against North Korea.

Iraqi counter-terrorism forces regain another neighbourhood in Mosul .

The commander of the Nineveh Liberation Operation, Lieutenant General Abdul Amir Yarallah, said the army raised the Iraqi flag over buildings in al-Anbar neighborhood, inflicting “huge loss” to the ultra-hardline group. The 9th Division of the Iraqi army secured the south bank of the Tigris River that bisects the city of Mosul, Nineveh Operation. Command said.According to Yarallah, the villages of Shweitah, Tal al-Asfour and al-Sabouniya were regained. Iraqi forces are making progress in their offensive to expel ISIS from Mosul but face a “very complicated” urban battle as the militants hide in mosques, homes and hospitals, a U.S. general told Reuters. Iraqi troops pounded ISIS positions in Mosul’s Old City  as they continued their push to seize control of the strategic al-Nuri Mosque. Close-quarters fighting in the area is focused on the Old City surrounding the mosque, where ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed a caliphate nearly three years ago across territory controlled by the group in both Iraq and Syria

Putin says trust erodes under Trump, Moscow icily receives Tillerson.

Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday trust had eroded between the United States and Russia under President Donald Trump, as Moscow delivered an unusually hostile reception to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in a face-off over Syria. Tillerson started a meeting with Putin in the Kremlin after talking to his Russian opposite number Sergei Lavrov for around three hours. The Kremlin had previously declined to confirm Putin would meet Tillerson, reflecting tensions over the U.S. strike on Syria. Just as Tillerson sat down for talks with Lavrov earlier on Wednesday, a senior Russian official assailed the “primitiveness and loutishness” of U.S. rhetoric, part of a volley of statements that appeared timed to maximize the awkwardness during the first visit by a member of Trump’s cabinet.

Russia accuses US of nnlawful Syria raid as Tillerson visits.

Russia’s top diplomat accused the United States on Wednesday of carrying out an unlawful attack against Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces as he opened a fraught meeting with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Trump, meanwhile, told Fox Business News that the U.S. had no plans to become more deeply involved in Syria and only did so because of last week’s deadly chemical weapons attack that killed dozens. Turkey has said tests showed sarin gas was used. He talked also about Assad and Putin’ support: “Frankly, Putin is backing a person that’s truly an evil person,” Trump aid in the Fox Business Network interview, referring to Assad. “I think it’s very bad for Russia. I think it’s very bad for mankind. This is an animal”. Anyway the dialogue and cooperation remain open roads for Syria Resolution, added Tillerson in Moscow.

 

Chinese President Xi and Donal Trump discuss the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Syria.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday held a telephone conversation with his U.S. counterpart, Donald Trump, and discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Syria. Xi said that China stuck to the target of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and that Beijing was committed to peace and stability of the peninsula. China held that the issue should be solved through peaceful means, said Xi, adding that his country was ready to maintain communication and coordination with the United States on the issue.

G-7 Ministers aim to press Russia to stop backing Assad.

Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven industrialized nations were gathering in Italy Monday for a meeting given urgency by the chemical attack in Syria and the U.S. military response, with participants aiming to pressure Russia to end its support for President Bashar Assad and help mount a new push for peace. The meeting in  Lucca brings together the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Britain, Japan and Canada – as well as the U.S. and current G-7 president Italy. Britain is keen for the ministers’ meeting to produce a tough statement and perhaps a threat of new sanctions if Moscow does not end its military support for Assad. Johnson, who canceled the trip in Russia at the last minute, saying the chemical attack had “changed the situation fundamentally”. Finally, Tillerson is due to travel to Russia after the G-7 gathering, and Johnson said he will deliver a “clear and coordinated message to the Russians”.

 

EPA chief says Paris climate agreement 'bad deal' for U.S.

The United States should continue to be “engaged” in international climate change discussions but the Paris climate change agreement is a “bad deal” for the country, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency said Sunday. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt did not confirm whether the United States would remain in the global climate change pact, under which nearly all countries agreed in 2015 to halt or curb their greenhouse gas emissions, even as the world’s biggest emitter China reaffirmed its commitment to the agreement.

US says Assad removal no longer priority in Syria.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said the US is changing course on Syria, and that the removal of Syrian President Bashar Assad is no longer a priority. Haley said she wants to work with countries such as Turkey and Russia to find a long-term political solution in Syria, rather than keep the focus on the Syrian president’s future. Just prior to Haley’s comments, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson held a joint press conference in Turkey with his counterpart there, Mevlut Cavusoglu, and signaled the change in direction for US diplomacy. Tillerson said “Assad’s long-term presence must be decided by the Syrian people”.
