BreakingNews @en di

On Tuesday, Vladimir Putin denied that there is a territorial dispute over the Russian-held, Japanese-claimed islands of Hokkaido, and said Japan must make concessions to conclude a bilateral World War II peace treaty.

“We believe we have no territorial problems at all. It is only Japan that believes it has territorial problems with Russia. We are ready to talk about this,” the Russian President said in an interview with Japanese TV ahead of his visit to Japan this week for a summit with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

ISIS is increasing its attacks in Syria because of the U.S.’ refusal to cooperate with Russia – Dmitry Peskov

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the United States’ refusal to cooperate with Russia in fighting terrorism has resulted in ISIS increasing its attacks in Syria. Peskov told journalists on Monday that actual cooperation and military coordination with other states including the US could have led to avoiding attacks like the one that targeted Palmyra, but sadly Washington refuses to cooperate with Moscow in this regard. He asserted that an end will be put to ISIS attacks on Palmyra very soon, adding that ISIS’ attack on Palmyra shows the threat posed by this terror organization, calling on the international community to exert more efforts to liberate Palmyra from terrorists.

U.S. opposition to bilateral summit between PM Shinzo Abe and President Putin disregarded by Japan

BreakingNews @en di

Japan has disregarded U.S. opposition to a planned bilateral summit between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Tokyo next week, diplomatic sources said. Last month, Washington repeatedly conveyed its objection to the Abe-Putin meeting in the capital out of concern that it might relieve pressure on Moscow by the Group of Seven economies, but on Thursday Japan formally announced the summit for Dec. 16, as well as another meeting in Yamaguchi Prefecture the previous day.

Syrian Army put its active combat operations in Aleppo on hold to evacuate civilians

On the sideline of OSCE’s Ministerial Council, Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, affirmed that military activities in the Aleppo region were halted on December 8 only for a specific period of time in order to allow civilians to leave the city. Lavrov affirmed that Russia is looking for a solution that involves as few casualties as possible. On Thursday, the Syrian Army put its active combat operations in eastern Aleppo on hold to evacuate some 8,000 civilians. Lavrov added that he is hopeful about the upcoming talks on Syria in Geneva, saying there’s a good chance that an agreement can be reached regarding eastern Aleppo, provided that experts from the US actually show up in Switzerland. According to Lavrov, there is a good opportunity to strike an agreement with the United States on the withdrawal of all militants from eastern Aleppo at the meeting of experts on Saturday.

No reinforcements to the militants surrounded in Eastern Aleppo

BreakingNews @en di

The militants surrounded in Eastern Aleppo will not get reinforcements, Lavrov said, adding that the US decision to lift the embargo on arms supplies to Syrian combatants will influence the Syria talks of Russia and the US. “It is another weird peculiarity of the US policy towards Syria and towards Aleppo, that is when the left hand is doing something constructive whereas the right hand is opening the sluice gate for pumping weapons to militants”, he noted.

Syrian forces’ offensive against the rebel-held parts of Aleppo continues

BreakingNews @en di

Syrian government forces and their allies are continuing their offensive against rebel-held parts of eastern Aleppo. Witnesses and monitors on December 9 reported shelling and air strikes against rebel enclaves, despite an announcement by Russia the previous day that the offensive had been halted to allow for the evacuation of civilians. Meanwhile in Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed concern about a decision by the United States to ease restrictions on providing arms to antigovernment rebels in Syria. Peskov said Moscow fears U.S.-provided shoulder-launched antiaircraft missiles could end up in the hands of “terrorists” and “pose a serious threat” to countries in the region and beyond. Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced that Russian and U.S. military experts and diplomats will meet in Geneva on December 10 to evaluate the situation in Aleppo and try to reach agreements on the evacuation of civilians, the provision of humanitarian aid, and the withdrawal of antigovernment forces from the city. The UN estimates there are some 100,000 civilians still in the embattled city.

Russia is actively supllying tons of humanitarian aid in Syria

BreakingNews @en/Defence di

Moscow has blasted as “outrageous twisting of the facts” a statement by EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who said the EU was the only party providing aid to Syria. The Russian Foreign Ministry also officially responded to Mogherini’s statement  and said that Russia, “unlike other international players, is actively supplying thousands of tons of humanitarian aid to various regions in Syria, including the liberated areas in eastern Aleppo, at the risk of Russian military lives.” Mogherini’s words aren’t the first aimed against the Russian humanitarian effort in Syria: last week, British Prime Minister Theresa May’s office said that the Syrian regime and their influencers are preventing aid from reaching Aleppo. In response, Russian Defence Ministry’s spokesperson, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said that  the UK government has lost an objective view of what is happening in Syria, including Aleppo, due to Russophobia, adding that the UK has not sent a single gram of flour, any medicine or blankets to help civilians in Aleppo during the whole Syrian conflict.

No common approach on the roadmap for the Donbass settlement reached so far

BreakingNews @en/Defence di

Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, affirmed that no common approach on the roadmap for the Donbass settlement has been reached so far. He reminded that the four Ministers met in late November in Minsk. So far, no common approach has surfaced, although the process is slowly moving, at a snail’s pace however. At their meeting in the Belarusian capital city on November 29, the Normandy Four, namely Russian, German, French and Ukrainian, Foreign Ministers failed to agree a roadmap for the implementation of the Minsk’s agreements. The agreements, signed on September 2014 and February 2015, envisaged a ceasefire between Ukrainian government forces and people’s militias in the self-proclaimed republics in Donetsk and Lugansk starting from February 15 and subsequent withdrawal of heavy weapons from the line of engagement. The deal also laid out a roadmap for a lasting settlement in Ukraine, including local elections and constitutional reform to give more autonomy to the war-torn eastern regions.

Syrian government forces suspended military activities against militants in Aleppo

On Thursday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking in Hamburg on the sideline of OSCE meeting,  announced that Syrian government forces have suspended “active military activities” against militants in eastern Aleppo to enable the withdrawal of civilians from the city. Lavrov added that it had been agreed that Russian and US military experts would meet in Geneva, Switzerland, on Saturday. Lavrov also met with his US counterpart John Kerry, and later in the day held a telephone call with him. Russian Foreign Minister also said that Based on the US side’s declared readiness to facilitate the withdrawal of militants from that city, the sides agreed to look into practical details of this process.
