Nigeria: An ethnic clash in Osun State lasted two days has caused at least 5 deads

An ethnic clash in Osun State between Yorubas and Hausas has caused at least 5 deads and many injuried. The crisis started in the ancient area of Sabo (mainly occupied by Hausas) and it lasted two days, destroying properties and shops. Still on wednesday Ife indigenes were seen going around Sabo with machetes, knives and other dangerous equipment. Residents reported that the conflict had begun when a vehicle driven by a Yoruba man hit the wife of a Hausa trader, which led some youth to attack the vehicle with machetes. Right when the situation seemed to be rebrought under control, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, went for a reprisal attack causing an escalation of violence. The angry mob then tried to force the entrance of Sabo and attacked some Hausa traders. Due to the continued breach of the peace in the area, The Osun State government declared a curfew (from 6 pm to 7 am) in the ancient area of Sabo, taking effects from wednesday to friday. The Government also wars those who are involved in these acts, to end them immediately.

Madagali: two explosions killed at least 10 people

Two explosions ripped through a bustling market in northeast Nigeria’s Madagali town on Friday morning, and a survivor says they killed at least 10 people. Boko Haram fighters are blamed for the attack on the edge of the Islamic extremist group’s Sambisa Forest stronghold, which Nigeria’s military has been bombing ahead of ground assaults. Since the military has dislodged the extremists from towns and villages this year, the insurgents have been attacking soft targets. Madagali was liberated last year after months in the hands of Boko Haram.

U.S. House of Representatives passed a legislation to help combat Boko Haram

In a long-awaited victory, the U.S. House of Representatives, today, by a voice vote passed H.R. 3833/S. 1632, legislation introduced by Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (D-Florida) and Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) to help combat Boko Haram. The measure directs the U.S. secretaries of State and Defense to jointly develop a five-year strategy to aid the Nigerian government; members of the Multinational Joint Task Force created to combat Boko Haram; and international partners who’ve offered their support to counter the regional threat posed by the insurgents. The strategy also would address the crushing humanitarian and education crises the terrorists have created.

Boko Haram soldiers killed by Nigerian troops

A yet unknown number of Boko Haram fighters were reported killed on Sunday after Nigerian troops returned fire in response to an attack on its location by armed terrorists in the Kangarwa area of Borno State.
People familiar with the matter told the terrorists attacked troops of the 119 Task Force Battalion at about 4 P.M. on Sunday, shooting sporadically. Nigerian soldiers responded promptly, killing an unknown number of Boko Haram fighters, and wounding several others. One of our sources said at least 13 bodies of terrorists were counted after calm was restored. He said several other members of the sect escaped with “serious gunshot wounds”.

Two Memoranda of Understanding signed by Nigeria and China on geosciences cooperation

Nigeria and China have signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) on geosciences cooperation during the Nigeria-China Mining Investment Roadshow which held in Beijing, China. The MoUs provide for cooperation between the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), the China Geological Survey (CGS) and the Shandong Provincial Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources of China.

“X-Squad” arrested at least 14 suspected pipeline vandals

No fewer that 14 suspected pipeline vandals were apprehended by the police in Uhunmwode Local Government Area of Edo State. The suspects were said to have been arrested by operatives of the ‘X-Squad’ of the Zone 5 police headquarters in Benin at about 2:30 a.m. on November 26. It was learnt that over 700 jerrycans filled with petroleum products suspected to have been stolen from a pipeline belonging to the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in Obazagbon village were recovered. Also recovered from the suspected vandals were four buses loaded with the jerrycans, a Mercedes-Benz 190 car, an Audi car and an unregistered motorcycle.

Members of Boko Haram are hiding in some villages in Monguno

The House of Representatives yesterday raised an alarm that some members of the Boko Haram sect are hiding within some villages in Monguno, Marte and Nganzai local government areas of Borno State. The lawmakers, while adopting a motion by Rep Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC, Borno), said due to the development, the Nigerian Armed Forces found it difficult to flush out members of the sect from the areas. The House said the action has adversely affected the amenities for the people of Monguno.

Nigerian Forces liberated at least 16 local governments occupied by Boko Haram

The United Nations on Tuesday confirmed that at least 16 local governments initially occupied by the Boko Haram in north-east Nigeria have been liberated by Nigerian forces. The immediate past UN Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Safieldin, said he made on-the-spot assessment of some of the liberated local governments including Bama, Damboa, Monguno, Konduga, Dikwa, Gwoza, Pulka, and Banki .
Speaking to the New York correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria, the official lamented the level of destruction on the communities by Boko Haram, saying there is real humanitarian crisis in the liberated areas.

NDGJM not ready for talks with the Federal Government

After attacking the 42-inch delivery line operated by NPDC, the NDGJM announced that it was not ready for talks with the Federal Government. NDGJM also warned government to be cautious of conflict merchants and political jobbers in the region and said: “Be wary of these political jobbers, whose stock in trade has always been using the struggle to profiteer. We have severally indicated how to end this and definitely not through political jobbers and conflict merchants. If, and when we have reasons to trust anybody to hold discussions with, we shall, through this same medium, announce the process and the persons. This is a warning for the wise.”

Federal Government still working to ensure the release of more Chibok girls

The Federal Government yesterday stated that dialogue was still ongoing to ensure the release of more Chibok girls and other persons held hostage by terrorists, even as it has threatened to deal with sponsors of Boko Haram as terrorists. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity , Dr Femi Adesina made the assertion in Lagos. Reiterating federal government’s resolve at ensuring that those held hostage by members of the Boko Haram sect were released in good condition, Adesina said ” This government is doing all it can to tackle insurgency. If it knows the sponsors and is double sure they are the sponsors, it would be left with no choice than to treat them like Boko Haram”.
