Nigeria meningitis outbreak: 282 deaths confirmed in five states

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has registrated an increase of meningitis cases in five states with at least 282 deaths. Chikwe Ihekweazu, the Chief Executive Officer, said that have been recorder since february 1,966 suspected cases and amongst them, 109 have been confirmed. Zamgara has the hightest number of confirmed cases, followed by Katsina, Sokoto and Kebbi; a new strand of meningitis called “stereotype C” has emerged in place of the previous known type “stereotype A”, which has disappeared. He regretted that there was not yet commercially available vaccine for this new stereotype “C” meningitis. For this reason was necessary to make application to the World Health Organisation : the vaccine for this specific outbreak stereotype is not commercially available. “Thankfully the vaccines have arrived and we have started vaccination campaign in Zamfara. We are in the process of starting in Sokoto and Kebbi states”. Meningitis is a tough disease and it is associated with over-crowding, understanding the living conditions in the country, people must keep their building ventilated, avoid sleeping in overcrowded condition.

Boko Haram attacks Borno communities, kidnaps 10 people

Boko Haram members allegedly attacked communities in Konduga local Government, Borno State, and kidnapped 10 people. Ibrahim Abdullahi ( Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps) declared the terrorists invaded Konduga and abducted four women and six youths. MrAbdullahi told the News Agency of Nigeria in Maiduguri on tuesday that many other villages were invaded too, because the insurgents are looking for more youths to recruite to sustain their fight in the state, since they have been effectively decimated by the Nigerian military. This is a clarion call to Nigerians to be on the alert at all times and always report any suspicious activities around them to the security agencies, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who are desperate to return to their liberated communities should desist from living in areas that are not properly secured by armed personnel.Millions of people have been displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency since 2009, while about 100,000 have been killed, according to official estimates. Hundreds of people including scores of female secondary school students kidnapped in 2014 from their school in Chibok, Borno State, are still being held by the Boko Haram.

Boy 17 years old, for terrorist group Boko Haram, admitted having killed 18 people

NSCDC ( Nigeria Security and Civil Defence) on tuesdaypareded a 17 years old boy who admitted having killed 18 people since he joined the terrorist group three years ago. Ali Mustafa said he was forced to join the group when he was abducted with many others kids in his village, Monguno.<Boko Haram insurgents came to our village and forcefully took many of us away. We were kept in the bush camp near Kala Balge and from there we carried out various operations, during which I personally killed 18 persons> the teenagers said. He has spent 3 years killing people against his wish, but recently,while in a mission to Maiduguri, he decided to abandon. Hundreds of young boys are currently working for Boko Haram, alongside the youg boy nine other criminals were arrested.

Health Commissioner: 21 people die of meningitis in Sokoto State

The State Health Commissioner, Balarabe Kakale, confirmed that in Sokoto State meningitis cases are increasing, resulting in the death of 21 deaths. The death were recorded in seven local government particularly affected by this outbreak: Kebbe, Bodinga, Rabah, Wamakko, Gada, Dange/Shunj and Tureta. The state government had deployed across the 23 local governments several medical teams comprising over one hundred medical personnel and provided of free drugs and medicament. The team went around the houses in the villages, treatening around 300 cases of malaria and meningitis: out of the 330 cases, 40 were confirmed in the laboratories to be cases of meningitis, out of which 14 fatalities were recorded, but thousands of other cases were treated at the Primary Health Centres in the local governments. Some cases are imported from other states, moreover the traditional belief in witchcraft makes it difficult to fight the disease: the families refuses to take suspected patients to the hospital even with the typical meningitis symptoms: “The people of the state should disregard rumours of witchcraft and take all suspected persons to the hospitals early. Keeping them at home will only make the disease worse and cause transmission to other members of the family”.

Nigeria introduces visa on arrival for foreign investors.

The Nigeria  Immigration Service (NIS) has announced  the introduction of an online Visa on Arrival (VOA) facility especially for foreign investors willing to invest in Nigeria. The Comtroller of the NIS, Mr Muhammad Babandede said that‎ the measure was part of the resolution of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council in order to attract foreign investors to the country.The controller said that the new process was‎ designed to eliminate all unnecessary bureaucratic visa processing procedures in Nigerian Missions abroad.‎ He said that a VOA desk had been opened at all international airports in the country where visas would be issued upon the presentation of all the necessary travel documents. The NIS boss expressed optimism that the VOA process and the introduction of the harmonised arr‎ival and departure cards would go a long way in attracting investors to the country.

Three killed in attacks in refugees camp in Nigeria.

Three kamikazes got in a camp for displaced people in Maiduguri (northestern part of Nigeria) carriyng with them explosives weapons killed three people and made twenty injuried. The victims were fastly took to Maiduguri Hospital, near the displaced camp. Five coordinated attacks took place, the first one in an informal building hosting around 200 people: three kamikazes got and activated their explosive belt. The following attack has been in a displaced camp nearby called Muna, where the terrorists provoked a fire, said the coordinator of the camp. The Muna camp  ( which has been denounced for its  degradating humanitarian conditions, such as the lack of water) has already been attacked in February.

China seeks APC’s support on Nigeria’s ‘full execution’ of One China rule.

The Peoples Republic of China Ambassador to Nigeria, Zhou Pingjian, has met the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, requesting the Party’s support in ensuring Nigeria’s ‘full execution’ of the China policy between the two countries. China has almost approved $5 billion to support infrastructure projects in Nigeria and every five year it draw a new blueprint for the year ahead, it means that major policy decisions will be made. Relationship between the two countries has always been friendly, since 1971 but in 1999, Nigeria’s ministry of commerce signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Taiwan which led to a Trade between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Nigeria, and that makes two Chinas: this controvenes the policy of one China. Last year President Muhammadu Buhari was in Beijing and raised an issue with the Chinese President. “Nigeria’s policy is one China but unfortunately, it has not been fully executed”. What we are asking the ministry of foreign affairs to do is to fully implement, execute the One China policy”. The APC Chairman declared  that Nigeria will take the message very seriously, in order to not let this issue stand in the way of the so much important relationship between China and Nigeria.

Protesters want Amnesty International to leave.

A group of protesters barricated themselves at Amnesty International offices, at Abuja, asking the international organization to leave within 24 hours. Melvin Ejeh, protesters speakperson, said that the group will carry on a five day protest as a first warning: “Let us warn at this point that there will be no interval of respite if Amnesty International fail to leave Nigeria at the end of the five days, as we will activate other more profound options to make the organization leave Nigeria”. Amnesty International is accused by the protestors to “carrying out atrocities which destabilise Nigeria”. Mr. Ejeh said even organisations like the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, and the Global Amnesty Watch had condemned a recent report by Amnesty International which alleged human rights abuses by Nigerian security agencies against arrested Boko Haram suspects. The organisation’s reports stated that 240 people, including infants, died in a military detention centre in Borno in 2016. The military denied the claims contained in the report, saying “they were contrived lies orchestrated to blackmail and ridicule the Nigerian Armed Forces”.

 

Lower oil prices, sabotage reduce revenue shared by federal, states, local govt by N36 billions

Nigeria’s distributable government revenues fell to N429.127 billion naira in February from N465.19 billion in January due to lower oil prices (which fell from $49.57 to $44.74 per barrel durign February). The Office of the Accountant General of the Federation declared ina  statement that the fall was determinated  by the sabotage of the nation’s oil pipelines by Niger Delta militants. Infact the pruduction  of the oil diminished in that period beacuse of the leakages in the pipelines. Nigeria is an OPEC member, had been hit by the fall in global crude prices since mid 2014 and last year entered in its first recession. Militants have carried out attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta energy hub for a year, cutting oil production, they want the oil hub to share the country’s energy.

Cameron repatriates "by force" 2,600 Nigerian refugees

More than 2600 Nigerian refugees (from the beginning of the year), settled in the north of Cameron, were sent back to Nigeria (with the use of violence) because of the fear of Boko Haram attacks, denounced the Top Commissioner of of the UN for the refugees ( UNHCR) durign a press briefing. According to UNHCR staff, the refugees explained that Cameroonian troops embarked them agains their will and “without leaving them the time to gather their stuff”, underlining that this dismissals of strenght are against the international law. The UNHCR says to be very warried because these rimpatriations (which seems motivated by safety) continue even though the agency of the UNO signed an agreement between Cameroon and Nigeria about voluntary return of Nigerian refugees.
