Residents have been streaming out of western neighbourhoods recaptured by the government, many desperately hungry and traumatized by living under ISIS’ harsh rule. As many as 600,000 civilians are still trapped with the militants inside Mosul, and thousands of residents have escaped to government lines in recent days but it has been impossible to tally the number of civilian casualties. The army and security forces have made significant gains in recent days in the battle that started back in October, seizing a main bridge over the Tigris River and advancing towards the mosque in the Old City from where ISIS’ leader declared a caliphate in 2014. But the fighting is expected to become even harder as the militants defend their last enclaves in what was once their stronghold in Iraq.

The Iraqi Minister of Migration and Displacement said Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) don’t contribute to an overload of the Kurdistan Regional Government

BreakingNews @en di

The Iraqi Minister of Migration and Displacement said Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) don’t contribute to an overload of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) that cause an electricity shortage. Mohammed noted less than one million Iraqi displaced people have now been settled in the Kurdistan Region, which previously was 1.4 million. As the Islamic State (ISIS) overran large swaths in Iraq in June 2014, thousands of Iraqis fled their homes and headed towards the Kurdistan Region. KRG officials repeatedly say the Iraqi government’s humanitarian assistance to the region hasn’t been sufficient to deal with the displaced people. They also say it is a reason for the economic crisis which has faced the KRG since 2014, after drop of oil prices and budget share cut from Baghdad.

Tunnels under ancient Mosul Mosque show Isis focus on loot

BreakingNews @en di

Extensive excavations by Islamic State militants under Mosul’s ancient Mosque of Jonah show they took care to preserve artifacts for loot, a local archaeologist said on Thursday, in sharp contrast to their public desecration of antiquities. The militants seized the mosque when they stormed through northern Iraq three years ago but experts surveying the damage after it was recaptured in January by a U.S.-backed Iraqi campaign found a network of tunnels dug by the militants, leading down to a 7th century BC Assyrian palace. The careful way the tunnels were dug show the militants wanted to keep the treasures intact, said archaeologist Musab Mohammed Jassim: The digging “was carried out according to a plan and knowledge of the palace”, he said.

Turkey and United States evaluate options for joint Raqqa operation

BreakingNews @en di

Turkey and the U.S. are discussing options for a joint operation to retake Daesh’s so-called capital of Raqqa, a photo released by the Turkish military has revealed. Turkish military Chief of Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar met with his counterparts U.S. Gen. Joseph Dunford and Russian Gen. Valery Gerasimov in the southern city of Antalya on Tuesday. The Turkish military released photos of the meeting, and in one of the photos, a document can be seen in front of a Turkish general with the title “Raqqa Offensive: Turkey-U.S. joint planning”. The photo revealed that Ankara and Washington are currently evaluating options to draw up a joint plan for the Raqqa offensive. A U.S. commander of the anti-Daesh coalition told reporters last week that military leaders are still discussing Turkey’s participation in the Raqqa operation, and that a decision is yet to be made on whether to include the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) led by the PKK’s Syrian offshoot the Democratic Union Party’s (PYD) armed wing, the YPG in the offensive. Ankara strictly opposes any involvement of the PYD/YPG in the Raqqa operation, as Turkey considers it a terrorist group. Ankara has suggested that the Free Syrian Army (FSA), which has successfully liberated Jarablus, Dabiq and al-Bab as part of Turkey-backed Operation Euphrates Shield, lead the operation in cooperation with the Turkish military. The YPG, under the guise of the SDF, is on its way to Raqqa. In fact, according to sources close to the YPG, the terrorist group is positioned only a few kilometers away from Raqqa, a Syrian city on the northeast bank of the Euphrates River. Ankara has claimed that several thousand FSA fighters were ready to engage against Daesh to liberate Raqqa.
