Pakistan reopens Afghanistan border crossing after deadly clash

Pakistan reopened a major border crossing with Afghanistan on Saturday, officials said, more than three weeks after several people were killed when troops from both sides exchanged fire for hours. The Chaman crossing into Afghanistan’s Kandahar province was reopened on “humanitarian grounds” after Afghan officials submitted a request, according to a statement by the Pakistani military. “It has been agreed upon by Pakistan authorities that [a] ceasefire shall continue to be maintained and no border violation will be acceptable”, the statement said, noting that Pakistani troops will maintain positions along the border. Zia Durani, police spokesman for Kandahar province, said the crossing had reopened after several days of negotiations.

“The continuing torture and ill-treatment of conflict-related detainees is a matter of serious concern, but we acknowledge the genuine commitment and the efforts of the Government to deal with this issue”, said Tadamichi Yamamoto, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan. The findings are based on interviews with 469 conflict-related detainees conducted from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2016 in 62 detention facilities administered and they talked about an Afganistan that did not change with weidspread misstreatment and torture against conflict-releated detainees. The torture appears to be linked to forcing confessions, according to the report, and stopped once detainees signed a “confession” 8211 even in cases when the interviewed detainees did not understand or could not read what was written in the “confession. Joint search and intelligence based operations were conducted by Punjab Rangers, police and intelligence agencies in DG Khan, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Sialkot, Shakargarh and Jand, Attock and Sheikhupura under the umbrella of Pakistan Army’s countrywide operation Raddul Fasaad, Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. According to ISPR, 46 suspects were apprehended, 11 of which belonged to Afghanistan. Weapons and ammo were also recovered from the detainees.
