Trump assures that North Korea will not develop a nuclear missile able to reach the U.S. territory

On Monday evening, US President-elect Donald Trump promised on Twitter that North Korea would not develop a nuclear missile capable of reaching US territory. His comments came a day after the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, appeared to try to put pressure on Trump by announcing his country is in the “final stages” of developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). “North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the US,” Trump tweeted. “It won’t happen!”

President Park Geun-hye refused to testify

South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Tuesday refused to testify in a case that will decide her future following her impeachment over a corruption scandal, forcing the Constitutional Court to delay the start of oral arguments.
After Park’s refusal, the nine-justice court asked her to testify on Thursday, when some of her current and former aides are also scheduled to testify. Her no-show brought criticism from lawmakers, who serve as prosecutors in the trial.

Discussions about joining peace talks frozen due to “breaches” in the ceasefire by the Syrian governmen

Syrian rebel groups have announced they are freezing discussions about joining peace talks sponsored by Russia because of “breaches” in a four-day-old cease-fire by the Syrian government. In a statement, the rebel groups said that any territorial advances by the army and Iran-backed militias would end the effort to restart peace talks as well as a fragile cease-fire brokered by Russia and Turkey that went into effect on December 30. “The regime and its allies have continued firing and committed many and large violations…threatening the lives of hundreds of thousands of people,” said the statement signed by about a dozen mainly moderate rebel groups operating under the umbrella of the Free Syrian Army.

Air raids in Nangarhar province killed 19 ISIS members

Security experts believe the Reina nightclub attacker received military training

Police have released the first footage of the Reina attacker, who killed 39 people and wounded 65 others, with initial police reports suggesting he may be from Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan. Officials are also investigating the possibility that the attacker may be from Xinjiang in eastern China and aged around 25, according to a report in daily Habertürk. It is still unclear how many minutes the attacker spent inside the club before fleeing. He went upstairs after entering Reina and started firing on revelers, before going downstairs to continue shooting.

Daesh terror group claimed responsibility for the Reina nightclub attack

The Daesh terror group has claimed responsibility for the Reina nightclub attack that killed 39 people and wounded 65 others in Istanbul during New Year’s celebrations. The attack came at the same time that Ankara has intensified internal and cross-border operations against the terrorist organization. The launch of the cross-border operation was part of Turkey’s new aim to eliminate terror threats posed to the country’s national security before they are able to carry out the attacks. As such, through successful operations, Turkey has managed to push away the Daesh threat from its southern border to a range that is outside of that of the terror group’s missiles. Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu stated that police detained eight suspects yesterday who may be affiliated with the deadly attack. Also, during security forces’ operations targeting Daesh conducted between Dec. 26 and Jan. 2, some 25 of the 147 detained were later arrested for their links to the organization, the Ministry said in a statement.

170 opposition members killed or wounded by Afghan security forces in the last 9 months

170 armed members of the opposition were killed and wounded during Afghan security forces’ routine activities within the last 9 months in central Kapisa province. Sayed Mohammad Khalid Hashimi Governor of Kapisa told BNA that 20 military operations have been conducted by Afghan security forces in insecure areas of the province, particularly in Tagab, Alasay and Nijrab districts during this period. Hashimi appreciated the achievements and progresses of Afghan security forces during their activities in different parts of the province. Also members of provincial council of Kapisa expressed their pleasures regarding achievements of Afghan security forces in insecure areas of Kapisa.

2017: NATO would continue supporting NUG

NATO would continue supporting NUG in 2017 too, said a NATO representative adding that it would extend its political, economic and financial assistance to ANSF until 2020. The main goal of NATO, he continued, is to not allow Afghanistan once again to be changed into a terrorist sanctuary and to achieve this goal, NATO will continue its mission in Afghanistan. Although the Afghan government claims that in 2016 war on corruption has been successfully carried out with good outcomes. The Afghan government said that it has established the counter-corruption Legal and Judicial Center (CCLJC) to investigate corruption cases and the CCLJC had proven effective in preventing of corruption. But the NATO emphasizes that the NUG should strongly supervise the Reforms and good government because NUG has pledged to the world community to prevent and take firm steps for restoration of peace. NATO believes that diplomatic channels should be used for settlement of current Afghanistan problems, because war is not a solution.  And for this purpose NATO supports Afghan peace program and NATO has asked the region and payers to take effective role in restoration of peace.
