Tehran still undecided on Brussels Syrian session

Mr. Bahram Ghasemi told reporters on Thursday Iran had received an invitation to the session but had not come to a decision on participation or nonparticipation in Brussels, Iran’s state news agency IRNA report said. Brussels will host an international session organized by the EU and chaired by Federica Mogherini; “It will have two main objectives. On the one side, taking stock of the implementation of commitments of the donor community at the London conference, on which the EU has delivered in full”, Mogherini had told the press after the meeting earlier January. “But most of all it will be a political conference, hoping that could be the moment for the international community together to turn the page and start the political transition, the reconciliation process and the reconstruction of Syria”.

In the meeting on Thursday evening, Abdulah Skaka congratulated the Iranian ambassador on the new Iranian year, adding that in the contemporary world, cities are playing significant roles in economic, cultural and social fields and are regarded as the engines for development in their countries. He expressed hope to witness further expansion of relations and cooperation between the two capital cities in various fields as urban diplomacy and tourism. He also invited Tehran’s mayor to pay a visit to Sarajevo and underlined expansion of cultural cooperation between the two capitals. The Iranian ambassador, for his part congratulated Sarajevo mayor for his appointment to the post and said cultural and historical commonalities between the two nations and the political will of both governments for increasing level of mutual cooperation have prepared grounds for expansion of relations between the two capitals.

Washington seeking to tighten anti-Tehran sanctions.

A bipartisan group of US senators in Congress on Thursday introduced a bill that would impose tighter sanctions against Iran over its ballistic missile tests and other non-nuclear activities. The legislation would set mandatory sanctions for anyone involved with Iran’s missile program and those who trade with them. It would also apply sanctions to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC). Iran, however, maintains that none of its missiles have been designed to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads, because nuclear weapons have basically no place in the Islamic Republic’s defense doctrine. Iranian officials have underlined that the country will continue with its missile activity and that Tehran needs no permission from any country for enhancing its defense capabilities.

Iraqi diplomat: Baghdad ready to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia

Iraq’s Ambassador to Kuwait Alaa al-Hashimi said on Thursday that his country is ready to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Al-Hashemi made the remarks while speaking in an interview with the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida. Given its good relations with all regional countries, Iraq is ready to step in and help bring closer the views of Tehran and Riyadh, the ambassador said. He said that any measure by Iraq to help improve Iran-Saudi Arabia relations would not be a difficult one because there exists the required determination and good will on both sides.

The president said that once again the Palestine issue ‘brought us together’ to speak of a deep and painful scar that has annoyed the global community conscience and the Muslim world body. He noted that Palestine is not the issue of an ethnic group or nation, rather it is the injustice and denial of international rights and inefficiency of international organizations.

Iran will receive a new Airbus jetliner on March 19 or 20 and four others in the next Iranian calendar year, ending March 20, 2018, FarhadParvaresh, the managing director of the Airline of the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran Air) said on Saturday. The first plane, Airbus A321, that Iran purchased from the European aviation giant Airbus, landed in Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport on January 12, 2017.

Iran thanks China for readiness to mediate in Saudi dispute

Iran’s embassy in Beijing commended the Chinese government for its preparedness to mediate between Tehran and Riyadh, saying Iran has not still given up the hope that Saudis would realize the need for détente with the neighbors and contribute to regional security and stability.In a statement released on Friday, Iran’s embassy in Beijing welcomed China’s readiness to play a constructive role in the Middle East region. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi said he hopes Saudi Arabia and Iran can resolve their differences through “equal and friendly consultations”, adding, “China is friends with both Saudi Arabia and Iran. If there is a need, China is willing to play our necessary role”.

Speaking at a meeting with visiting Azeri President IlhamAliyev in Tehran, the Leader of the Islamic Revolution underlined that enemies are upset about the cordial relations between Iran and the Azerbaijan Republic.“The evil Zionist regime is trying more than all other enemies to weaken the brotherly relations between Iran and Azerbaijan and, (so) in return, the cordial ties (between Tehran and Baku) must be safeguarded”, Imam Khamenei said. The Leader mentioned common religion as the most important factor that creates a sense of closeness and relationship between the people of the two country. “Iran and Azerbaijan have always been, and still are, close together and the fact that about one million Azeri people traveled to Iran last year is just an example of these cultural and religious ties and commonalities” have said the Ayatollah Khamenei.

No obstacles to Kiev-Tehran strategic ties

Ukraine’s ambassador to Iran underlined his country’s willingness to enhance bilateral collaborations with the Islamic Republic, stressing that there are no barriers to establishment of bilateral strategic ties. Kiev attaches significance to its ties with Tehran, stressing that no third party can affect the relations: “We are ready to welcome Iranian officials at any level in Ukraine”, he stated. Last month, Iran’s ambassador to Ukraine also highlighted the ample opportunities available for enhanced cooperation between the two countries. The envoy further highlighted his country’s capacities in different fields as ship-building and aerospace industries and said Ukraine can help Iran in aerospace industries while the Islamic Republic can guarantee Ukraine’s energy security.  (In March 2016, Tehran and Kiev inked a memorandum of understating for the expansion of economic cooperation in various fields).
