three people attempting to leave Syria arrested for belonging to a terrorist group

The General Directorate of General Security on Wednesday announced the arrest of three people who were tasked by a Syria-based terrorist group to scout possible targets for “bomb and vehicle-ramming attacks” in Lebanon. In a statement, General Security said “Lebanese national M. Kh., his Lebanese wife H. H. and Palestinian refugee M. M. were arrested for belonging to a terrorist group, communicating with senior officials in it, and attempting to leave for Syria to join its ranks”. “During interrogation, they confessed to the charges, admitting that they belong to a terrorist group and that Palestinian refugee M. M. had recruited the aforementioned couple on behalf of the group” the statement added. The Lebanese couple “traveled to Turkey with the aim of entering Syria to join the wife’s relatives who fight alongside the terrorist group, but their attempt failed after they were arrested by Turkish authorities and sent back to Lebanon”. After arriving in Lebanon, Lebanese national M. Kh. communicated with his Syria-based brother-in-law A. H. who linked him to one of the group’s security handlers, General Security added. The handler tasked him with “collecting information and identifying figures or gatherings for possible bomb attacks, suicide operations or vehicle-ramming attacks that can be labeled as ‘quick forays’” the statement said.

Syrian IS Official Assassinated in Arsal

An Islamic State group official was shot dead on Wednesday in the restive Bekaa border town of Arsal. Three gunmen riding a motorcycle shot dead Syrian national Ahed al-Jawwash, aka Abu Adham al-Hamawi, one of IS’ security officials in Arsal. The agency said his body was found in Arsal’s al-Sabil Square before being transferred to the town’s al-Rahma hospital. IS militants and others from the rival jihadist group Fateh al-Sham Front, previously known as al-Nusra Front, are entrenched in Arsal’s outskirts and in mountainous areas along the undemarcated Lebanese-Syrian border. The Lebanese army regularly shells their posts while Hizbullah and the Syrian forces have engaged in clashes with them on the Syrian side of the border.

Aoun: Lebanon use special ways for fighting Israeli enemy

In light of the controversy that emerged after President Michel Aoun’s statement about Hezbollah’s weapons, Aoun stated on Tuesday that the future of the party’s arms will comply with Lebanon’s National Defense Strategy. “Lebanon, relative to its surroundings in terms of both human and economic power, is incapable of building a military force capable of confronting the enemy. Therefore it has to use special ways for fighting, involving regular (army) and popular forces. This is the idea that can be translated into a realistic plan” added the President. Numerous dangers threaten Lebanon, most of them coming from the Israeli enemy, and pose challenges for the State to face them by putting forth a National Defense strategy based on the Constitution, the laws, the requirements of coexistence and the resolutions of the international legitimacy.

Hezbollah Secretary General, Sayyid Hassan Nasrallah, said during a sunday televised speech that Hezbollah supported a cease-fire in Syria and the end of bloodshed, which paves the way for political solutions. He added: “The victory in Aleppo opened spaces in Syria to safe areas, under a good security situation; this requires of us in Lebanon not to make the displaced file a religious or ideological one.” Over the security situation, Nasrallah called upon Lebanese people to maintain stability, heaping praise on the Lebanese army, its leadership and intelligence. Regarding the Beqaa region, he called on the state to hold its responsibility, and on the army and security forces to deal with the events within the law, as well as the people to cooperate, regretting the fact that “any incident in this area is highlighted more than other incidents in the country”.

The Lebanese-Jordanian summit will address the Syrian and Iraqi refugees crisis

The Baabda Presidential Palace has completed arrangements for President Michel Aoun’s trip to Egypt and Jordan next week, his second Arab trip after his election as president. On Monday, Aoun will first meet in Cairo with his Egyptian counterpart Abdul Fattah al-Sisi and Prime Minister Ibrahim Mahlab. He will later head to the Arab League headquarters for talks with its Secretary-General Ahmed AboulGheit. For their part, Lebanese ministers will hold meetings with their Egyptian counterparts. On Tuesday, Aoun will head to Jordan for talks with Jordanian King Abdullah II. The Lebanese-Jordanian summit will address the Syrian and Iraqi refugees crisis and study the ways to alleviate their impact on the economies of both countries.

General Security agents arrested overnight in the Choueifat area a Syrian young man suspected of plotting to carry out an act of terror. “The detainee was working as a delivery boy for one of the restaurants and he was plotting to prepare an explosive device”. On Wednesday, General Security announced the arrest of two Islamic State-linked men suspected of planning a suicide attack in central Beirut, confirming earlier media reports. The arrests come two weeks after an attempted suicide attack at Hamra’s Costa cafe. He “confessed that he monitored the movements and addresses of political figures and their convoys crossing the city center,” General Security said in its statement on Wednesday. He had worked with a Palestinian operative to plan a suicide attack in the center of the capital, it said.

4 Lebanese affiliated to terrorist organization arrested

The General Security Directorate General issued on Friday the following statement:”In the framework of its follow-up on the activities of terrorist groups and sleeper cells affiliated to them, and after qualitative monitoring, the General Directorate of General Security arrested, as per the signal of the public prosecutor, four Lebanese who had formed a cell linked to a terrorist organization and acting in its favor. During their interrogation, one of the Lebanese arrested nicknamed “Abu Yazeed” admitted his support to a terrorist organization and his recruitment of many young men. He also confessed he was preparing to travel to the city of Raqqa in Syria, passing trough Turkey, to join the fighting in the ranks of the organization.

No evidences of a Lebanese Forces-Hezbolah dialogue

“There are no serious indications regarding the Lebanese Forces and Hezbollah dialogue…we cannot agree on the triad equation of the people, resistance and the army especially that we know what the State’s institutions include,” Lebanese Forces Leader (LF), Samir Geagea said on Saturday. LF leader expressed positivity about President Aoun’s visit to Iran by saying “Aoun’s visit to Iran is normal and if Iran wants to help Lebanon, then why not?” but, also, highlighted the importance of President Aoun’s visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
