Human Rights Watch: false charges to prosecute political activists in Azerbaijan

The 75-page report, “Harassed, Imprisoned, Exiled: Azerbaijan’s Continuing Crackdown on Government Critics, Lawyers, and Civil Society,” documents the government’s concerted efforts to undermine civil society.

Human Rights Watch found that in 2016, the authorities used false, politically motivated criminal and administrative charges to prosecute political activists, journalists, and others. “With the release of some wrongfully imprisoned activists earlier this year, there were high hopes that Azerbaijan was turning a corner,” said Giorgi Gogia, South Caucasus director at Human Rights Watch and author of the report. “But optimism is fading fast as the government relentlessly pursues critics and tries to shut down independent groups.”

The humanitarian pause in Aleppo has been estende by Russia

BreakingNews @en di

On Friday, Sergey Rudskoi, Head of the Main Operations Directorate at Russia’s General Staff, said that the humanitarian pause in Aleppo has been extended by one day. It will be in force from 8am to 7pm on 22th  of October. The military official pointed out that militants in Syria have built up an armor-backed force of more than 1,200 men ready for mounting an offensive against Aleppo. According to Rudskoi, the militants have tanks, armored vehicles and 20 pickup trucks carrying large-caliber machineguns. In accordance with Rudskoi, the moderate opposition and its curators are obstructing normalization of the situation in Syria’s Aleppo, while the US provides no reaction to Russia’s calls to exert influence on militants in Aleppo to make them stop attacks along humanitarian corridors.

Russia is ready to provide assistance to Philippines

BreakingNews @en di

After the president of the Philippines announced a separation from the US on Thursday, Igor Khovaev, Russian Ambassador to Philippines, affirmed that Moscow is ready to provide assistance to and fully cooperate with Manila. The ambassador assured the news outlet that Moscow would not interfere with the domestic affairs of a sovereign state.

He also said that Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte impressed Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev during a meeting in Laos last month, and that Moscow supports the leader’s fight against illegal drugs and criminality. Despite 65 years of close partnership, relations between the US and the Philippines have soured in recent months over Duterte’s controversial “war on drugs” which has led to the death of at least 3600 people since May.

Duterte criticized US President Barack Obama’s “arrogance” earlier this month, as he announced a trip to China to discuss partnership projects. It was from China that he would later announce the separation from the US.

Peshmerga leaders will not enter Mosul, leaving the job to the Iraqi army

The International Rescue Committee said it had spoken to residents inside the besieged city, who had been stockpiling white cloths to wave in surrender when anti-Isis forces eventually enter the city. The IRC also said the old and infirm were struggling to breathe properly in Mosul because of the toxic smoke of oil fires. Peshmerga leaders have said they will not enter Mosul, leaving that role to the Iraqi army, which is anxious to use the campaign as a nation-building moment, two years after it too fled the area.

“They can have Mosul,” said one Peshmerga officer, three miles behind the front. “We don’t want it. All we want is the Kurdish land that Saddam took from us. After that, we can build a real country.”

Aleppo bombing: the EU might sanction Russia

BreakingNews @en di

The EU could threaten Russia with sanctions over the bombing of Aleppo, according to a draft EU summit communique seen by the Guardian. Arriving at the summit in Brussels on Thursday, Theresa May had urged fellow leaders to press the Kremlin to stop its “appalling, sickening” atrocities in Syria. The prime minister said Europe needed to take a “robust and united stance” in the face of Russian aggression.

EU sources do not expect a decision on Thursday night, but want to ensure the threat is on the table. If sanctions were agreed, diplomats would draw up a list of Russian names and organizations that would be subject to travel bans and asset freezes.
