The chief of the World Trade Organization has heaped praise on Japan for its leadership role in forging ahead with the Trans-Pacific Partnership even after the United States quit the free trade pact. “Any movement that goes in the direction of trade liberalization or the reduction of distortions in global trade is a good movement, and I’m supportive of that”, Roberto Azevedo said in an exclusive interview with The Asahi Shimbun in Tokyo on May 22. “If Japan were not doing anything, I doubt that this initiative would still be moving forward”, the director-general of the WTO stated. “I think there are not many countries in the world that can lead, that can drive forces, that can mobilize forces in the direction that we need at this point in time. Japan is one of those countries”.

On Jerusalem Day, PM vows: Western Wall will always be ours

BreakingNews @en di

A day after U.S. President Donald Trump’s departure, Jerusalem shifted its attention to official ceremonies, festivities and emotional remarks as the capital celebrated Wednesday the 50th anniversary of its reunification in the Six-Day War. Nethanyau said that Jerusalem was and always will be the capital of Israel. The Temple Mount and the Western Wall will always remain under Israeli sovereignty. The prime minister also participated in the official ceremony marking the liberation of Jerusalem, held on Ammunition Hill in Jerusalem. Nethanyau  said to the families of the fallen soldiers that we have not forgotten any of your loved ones. Despite the preparations, clashes erupted when left-wing activists tried to prevent the marchers from passing through Damascus Gate and were removed from the area by Border Police. Anyway we have to underline the fact that Jerusalem is also one of the poorest cities in the country. About 45% of Jerusalem’s nearly 900,000 residents live below the poverty line, compared with 20% among the population nationwide.

Reporter detained yet perpetrators behind arson on NRT remain at large, MP says

BreakingNews @en di

NRT reporter Aram Bakhtyar has been detained by Kurdish authorities yet the perpetrators behind an arson attack on NRT in 2011 still remain at large, Kurdish parliamentarian Ali Hama Salih said. “Journalists murderers, those who set NRT on fire, Baath regime supporters, Anfal campaigners, those who made people hungry and stole their wealth are not brought to justice or detained, rather they stand against people’s voting and disrupt their conscience”, Salih said in a post on his official Facebook account. “What is being done today towards you [NRT] serves the ugly system of governance in Kurdistan”, Kurdish lawmaker Salih said. Bakhtyar was detained by police in Kifri on Monday (May 22), after the Judicial Council filed a lawsuit against the NRT reporter in Kifri on May 3 following a report on a man who was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Bakhtyar was told that he was being detained on the charge of “defamation” and through a lawsuit from the president of Kirkuk-Garmyan appellate court, Akram Faraj. The report documented how a man was taken into custody in 2016 after confessing to the crime of stealing 14 times in a number of shops in Kifri and who blamed his lack of income due to the government’s austerity measures. Following the detention of the NRT employee, the court issued an arrest warrant for the channel’s director regarding the same report on the court case.

Third Parties Seeking to Spoil Iran-Pakistan Ties, Official Warns

BreakingNews @en di

A top Iranian national security official called for closer interaction with Pakistan to foil attempts at harming the two neighbors’ security and friendship. “We should not allow third countries, which are totally against security and good neighborliness between Iran and Pakistan, to have negative impact on the friendly ties between the two countries”, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said in a meeting with Pakistan’s national security advisor, Naseer Khan Janjua. The two officials met in Moscow on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the 8th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues. Elsewhere in the meeting, Shamkhani deplored a terrorist attack on Iranian border guards at the common border with Pakistan that killed 10 troops in late April, describing efforts to control the joint borders and fighting against terrorist groups at the border areas as an absolute necessity. For his part, the Pakistani official expressed the hope that closer security cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad would stop a recurrence of the terrorist attack on Iranian guards. Khan Janjua also said that Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s recent trip to Pakistan has had a remarkable effect on closer coordination between the two sides in the war on acts of violence along the borders. Heading a diplomatic and military delegation, Zarif visited Islamabad on May 3 to urge Pakistan to capture and bring to justice perpetrators of the April 26 terrorist attack that killed Iranian troops in Mirjaveh, in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Balouchestan. Following the trip, Pakistan’s army undertook to bolster its control over the areas bordering Iran.

Dossier Of The Massacres In The Kasai – The New York Times Tire On The Monusco And Kabila

BreakingNews @en di

The Congolese political microcosm has been hit by a scandal the last weekend, after the New York Times article which charged  the national deputy Clément Kanku, on the grounds that it would be involved in  the violence  in Grand Kasaï for nine months. While reaffirming the implication of this ex-secretary in the massacres which affected  his province of origin, his newspaper has just  accused Monusco of having showed a negligence, in the protection of two UN state employees murdered in Kasaï Central. According to The New York Times, Monusco would not have taken the security measures required before the travel of two investigators towards a part of the Republic where the insecurity was generalized,  not only because of the attacks of the militiamen Kamuina Nsapu, but also in the actions of Congolese reprisals of armed forces, on the background of massive violations of the rights of man. The newspaper argues that Zaïda Catalan and Michaël Sharp would not have received the useful information on the real security situation which prevailed over the ground, Monusco having let them venture into a nameless jungle with as guide a single interpreter.

Syrian Kurds Await Reaction of Damascus, Moscow to Ankara's New FSA Army Training

BreakingNews @en di

Chairman of the Syrian Democratic Council Rezan Hiddo said that the council is awaiting for the reaction of Syria and Russia to Turkey’s alleged training of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) militants to launch an operation in the Northern Syrian city of Afrin, in the wake of the US’ decision to arm the Syrian Kurds. “According to the received intel, Turkey is training FSA forces in order to carry out an operation in Afrin. Turkey decided to conduct the operation after the United States made the decision to supply weapons to the People’s Protection Units (YPG). Turkey cannot conduct ground operations in Kobani and Qamishli, as there are US troops there, but there are none in Afrin, that is why Turkey plans to carry out the operation here… We are waiting for the reaction of the Syrian and Russian governments in response to the Turkish plans,” Hiddo told Sputnik.

Hello, goodbye for Duterte, Putin

BreakingNews @en di

It was a meeting that nearly didn’t materialize. But Russian President Vladimir Putin quickly adjusted his schedule to talk with President Duterte Tuesday night in Moscow. Just hours after arriving in the Russian capital, Duterte had aborted his four-day official visit after the Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups laid siege to Marawi City. After signing his proclamation of martial law in Mindanao, Duterte prepared for his return flight, ready to forgo a meeting with his “idol” Putin that was originally scheduled for today. But Putin found time for his guest and the meeting pushed through, even if “it was hello and goodbye”, Duterte said at a press conference upon his arrival yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
