China needs more nuclear warheads to deter US threat, military says

The Chinese military’s mouthpiece said China must expand its nuclear stockpile so it can better deter and hit back at an enemy strike as geopolitical uncertainties mount and the US appears bent on a nuclear build-up.
China had enough nuclear weapons to prevent “bullying” by other nuclear powers but still needed to respond to changes in US strategy. The commentary comes as the administration of US President Donald Trump is expected to unveil its new military weapons policy later this week.

Cavusoglu, US chose wrong partner

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said the U.S. has chosen the “wrong partner” in the fight against Daesh terror group in Syria as he referred to the YPG/PKK terror group. To the New York Times, Cavusoglu said: “American reliance on the People’s Protection Units (YPG) is a self-inflicted error when the United States already has a capable partner in Turkey. “We have no doubt that the United States will see the damage this policy is inflicting on the credibility of the NATO alliance and correct its policy by putting its allies and long-term interests first again”. He said Turkey, however, could not afford to wait for “eventual and inevitable course corrections”. Cavusoglu said: “The victory against the group could not have been possible without Turkey’s active contributions”. In the article, Cavusoglu talked about how an impasse between U.S. and Turkey. He said the YPG/PKK terrorists across the borders in Iraq and Syria were using weapons and training provided by the United States. About the Operation Olive Branch, he said that Turkey will continue the operation until terrorist are wiped out. Furthermore, according to Cavusoglu, Turkey will not consent to the creation of separatist enclave or terrorist safe heavens.

US Marine Corps Commander General Robert Neller said on Thursday in Washington, D.C. that the US military must be psychologically prepared for a war with North Korea. Neller said a war on the Korean peninsula would be an extremely bloody affair, but the Marine Corps commandant said of such a hypothetical conflict: “I wasn’t saying it’s going to happen. I hope it doesn’t happen, I don’t want it to happen”.

Davos meeting between Zaev and Tsipras, of historic importance

In an interview with Greek newspaper Khatimerini, Matthew Nimetz, the special envoy for the name issue, stated that the Davos meeting between Prime Ministers Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras is positive and of historic importance. He expressed optimism with regards to find a mutually acceptable solution, thanks to international community cooperation, and the coordination with the UN, US as well as UE. “It’s time that talks are intensified as regards the conditions for a final agreement while treating with caution the issues raised by the two premiers. I’m coming to Athens and Skopje for talks in order to accelerate the process. I believe now there’s a dynamic to find a solution”, declared Nimetz. As Khatimerini reports, Nimetz has proposed the wide use of the new name only once Macedonia integration process into the EU is concluded.  Before that, the new name can be used on the international stage.

As lasted reported by a military official, on Thursday the Houthi army and popular forces  foiled two attempts of US-backed Saudi-paid mercenaries to infiltrate into army sites in Taiz province. The mercenaries was inflicted heavy casualties in Dhubab, Bir-Basha, and Osaifra fronts during their infiltration attempts. Furthermore, three civilians were killed and two others injured when the US-backed Saudi-led aggression airstrike hit their car in Jawf province. On Wednesday, President of the Supreme Political Council Saleh al-Sammad met with sheikhs and notables from Sanhan tribe of Sanaa province. In the meeting, the President and Sanhan’s sheikhs discussed the developments at the national arena in light of the US-Saudi-led coalition’s war on the country and its plots that aimed to undermine Yemen’s security and stability. Mr. President praised the sheikhs and sons of the district for their solidarity and popular cohesion in resisting the foreign invaders.

U.S. imposes more North Korea sanctions; urges China, Russia expulsions

The United States announced new sanctions aimed at stopping North Korea’s nuclear weapons development and urged China and Russia to expel North Koreans raising funds for the programs. The U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions on nine entities, 16 people and six North Korean ships it accused of helping the weapons programs. It said two China-based trading firms were involved in exporting millions of dollars worth of metals and other goods used in weapons production. “Treasury continues to systematically target individuals and entities financing the Kim regime and its weapons programs, including officials complicit in North Korean sanctions evasion schemes”, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

The US ambassador in Algiers described the relations between the two countries as “strong” and Algeria as “the main economic partner of the United States of America in North Africa”. The United States is ensuring the expansion of economic relations with Algeria and the strengthening of security cooperation and partnership.

UNSC Meeting Shows US Isolation on JCPOA

The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations said that the meeting of the Security Council – the 15-member council meeting to review regular report on the Resolution 2231 related to the nuclear agreement – stressed once again the international community’s full support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and confirmed the importance of its full implementation. The meeting also showed a demonstration of the United States isolation regarding the JCPOA. During the meeting the Permanent Representative of the United States made invented allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran, coming against the backdrop of US hegemonic intentions in the Middle East region and its expansionist policies. The destructive interventions of the United States in region and the exporting of billions of dollars of sophisticated weaponry, some of which ended up in the hands of Daesh terrorist fighters, are indeed the actual causes of instability. Despite the US assured to “make best efforts in good faith to sustain this JCPOA and to prevent interference with the realization of full benefits by of Iran of the sanctions lifting”, the statements of US Representative regarding to the JCPOA are inconsistent with this commitment. The international community should not allow the United States to continue to undermine the JCPOA.

Angry Tunisia

The decision of the US administration to make the city of Jerusalem the capital has provoked disapproval among the international community and particularly among the public opinion in the Arab world. Tunisia was among the first Arab countries to have courageously expressed its refusal of this unilateral decision. Indeed, the head of state Beji Caid Essebsi decided this Friday, to invite the American ambassador to Tunis, Daniel H. Rubinstein, to inform him of the position of Tunisia regarding the decision of Donald Trump. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also denounced the decision a few minutes after its announcement. The Assembly of the representatives of the people adopted, Thursday, in plenary session a motion also condemning this decision. Tunisians for their part spontaneously mobilized to express their solidarity with the Palestinian people. Many national organizations and components of civil society have called on Tunisians to participate massively in protest movements against this decision in several forms of militancy, including the peaceful marches and the boycott of American products.
