Cooperation programme for 2018 at center of meeting between Zied Laadhari and WB Resident Representative

The cooperation programme for 2018, which includes a variety of projects, including the Intensification of Irrigated Agriculture Project in four North-West governorates (Beja, Bizerte, Jendouba and Siliana), was the focus of a talk held on Friday between Minister of Development, Investment and International Cooperation Zied Laadhari and World Bank (WB) Resident Representative in Tunis Tony Veheijen. The meeting provided the opportunity to review cooperation between Tunisia and the WB in 2017 and discuss the budget support programme, in addition to the project to support the education sector to reduce inequalities in access to pre-school education and improvement of learning conditions in primary schools in some regions. During the talk, Laadhari voiced satisfaction at the excellent level of cooperation between Tunisia and the World Bank. In turn Veheijen reaffirmed the Bank’s will to continue its support to Tunisia so that it can carry out its development programme successfully.

Kef: 3 religious extremists arrested for acts of vandalism

Three religious extremists who committed acts of vandalism and violence during recent protests in El Kef were arrested on Thursday. These individuals are charged with attacking public property and burning and looting, as well as blocking roads, the same source added. After interrogation, two suspects were taken into custody and the third was released and will be summoned later for the purposes of the investigation.

The EU- Egypt Association Agreement

In Cairo was held the fifth session of the Subcommittee on Political Matters, Human Rights and Democracy of the Association Agreement between Egypt and the European Union. The meeting took place within the framework of the Partnership Priorities 2017-2020 signed by Egypt and EU and was chaired by Ambassador Raouf Saad and Colin Scicluna. The members discussed about the Middle East peace process, the situations in Syria, Libya and the Arab region. Both sides recognised the necessity of strengthening dialogue and cooperation on all matters of mutual interest. They discussed also cooperation in human rights, rule of law and democracy in order to achieve stability and peace in the Mediterranean area.

Algeria: Tamazight will be taught to imams

The Minister of Religious Affairs and Wakfs, Mohamed Aissa said that the teaching of Tamazight will be mandatory this year in the three training institutes of Algerian imams in Bouira, Tizi Ouzou and Batna. In this context, the minister explained that students enrolled in institutes will learn the Amazigh language to understand and know their origins and to speak with pride to express their religion. “Today, the Amazigh language is official. It is therefore imperative for us to adapt the training of imams to this new situation. So we decided to open Tamazight sessions in three Imam training institutes in Bouira, Tizi-Ouzou and Batn”, he added.

The US State Department warns its citizens to visit Algeria

The United States of America has ranked Algeria in category 2 of the countries in which US citizens must not go. The US State Department has issued a list of high-risk countries for its nationals. This list ranks Algeria in category 2, where the degree of the terrorist threat is high. “Most attacks take place in rural areas, but attacks in urban areas are possible despite a high and active police presence”, the US State Department adds, adding that “the US government has limited resources to provide emergency services outside the wilaya of Algiers because of travel restrictions imposed by the Algerian government on US officials”.

490 members of the Egyptian Parliament in favour of El-Sisi

One day after the NEA announcement of the upcoming elections’ timeline, 490 members of the Egyptian Parliament signed the recommendation forms to support Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s candidacy, although the President has still not announced his nomination. According to the article 142 of the Egypt’s constitution each candidate must have the recommendation of at least 20 members, or 25 000 citizens from 15 governorates, and each member is allowed to recommend just one candidate. Among those who supported El-Sisi there are the parliament speaker Abdel-Aal, the head of the media, culture and antiquities committee Osama Heikal, and also several members of opposition, including Nasserist Kamal Ahmed and Wafdist Mohamed Khalifa.

Yennayer, an important event that reflects the attachment of the Algerian people to national identity

The Minister of Youth and Sports said that the celebration of Yennayer is an important event that reflects the attachment of the Algerian people to the national identity, its components and to its dimensions. Assistant to part of the festivities organized on the occasion of the celebration of Yennayer at the elementary school “Adhim Fatiha”, in downtown Sidi Bel-Abbès where is taught the Amazigh language, the Minister pointed out that this event “confirms that the celebration of the Amazigh year is rooted in Algerian society and constitutes a reference for the institutions of civil society. “El Hadi Ould Ali emphasized the interest granted by the associative movement and by all members of society to this celebration aimed at strengthening and promoting the constants of national identity which have repercussions on the behavior of citizens, adding that We must rely on these constants to move towards a bright future in all areas”. The minister also welcomed the historic and exceptional decision made by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelaziz Bouteflika, decreeing January 12 of each year national holiday, before emphasizing that this decision reinforces the national identity with its three constants that are Islam, Arabity and Amazigh.

 

Libya: the disappearance of 100 illegal migrants

Today the Libyan Coast Guard has announced that a boat capsized off the coast of Khoms, 100 kilometres east of the capital Tripoli and 100 illegal migrants, from different African nations, were believed missing at sea. It added that 279 other migrants were rescued. In addition the Information Office of Libyan Navy said that that 262 illegal migrants were rescued by the boat Sabratha and arrived at the Tripoli naval base in Abu Sitta.

Egypt: the MENA tour of the US Vice President

Mike Pence, the US Vice President, will visit Egypt next week. This trip is part of the MENA tour that was rescheduled from December because of the US President Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Pence will travel to Egypt on January 20 to met the President El- Sisi, and then he will visit Jordan and Israel to encounter the King Abdullah and the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin. The aim of this tour is to discuss the efforts in the fight against terrorism and to improve security.

ALgeria: discontent is increasing in Tunisia because of the new financial law

Social discontent is rising in Tunisia. Yesterday, clashes between protesters and law enforcement broke out in several parts of the country. One is  death in circumstances still unknown in Tebourba, south of Tunis, several wounded and 44 arrests including 16 in Kasserine, a town in western Tunisia near the border with Algeria. In addition several public buildings were damaged during these clashes. At the origin of this wave of protest, the adoption of the 2018 finance law by a clear majority by the Tunisian parliament last December.
