Annual report of “Freedom House”: Algeria “is not a free country”

The ONG states that this year is the eleventh consecutive year in which the global level of freedom in the world is dropping, 37% of the world population would not be free, while 24% live in partially free states. Countries where democracy is complete would be only 39%. Algeria is one of the countries that this organization considers a “non-free country”. Freedom House, a non-governmental organization funded by the US government, includes Algeria in its list of 49 countries judged as not free in its 2018 ranking.This list includes all countries where democracy is partially or totally suppressed. Tunisia is the only country considered free in the Arab world with Morocco with a score of 35/100. According to this organization, Algeria gets a score of 6 for political freedoms and 5 for civil liberties belonging to the same category as Jordan, Venezuela or Gabon.

The sixth meeting of the Egyptian-Ethiopian Higher Committee after a three-years impasse

In an official statement the Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Soukry announced his participation at the sixth meeting of the Egyptian-Ethiopian Higher Committee after three years of impasse. The talks will discuss the bilateral economic, social and artistic relations, and also regional and international developments. In addition the foreign ministers of the two countries will set the encounter between the President El-Sisi and the Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn. In recent years there have been strained tensions within the relation between Egypt and Ethiopia, because of the Grand Renaissance Dam. It is a situation of concern to Egypt despite assurance from Ethiopia that the dam will not damage the other counties.

The US Ambassador’ speech

US Ambassador to Algiers, John Desrocher, delivered a speech on Monday, January 15 at the Diplomatic Institute and International Relations (IDRI), in which he returned to the Algerian-American prospects for the cooperation between the two countries.
“I have the impression that Algeria – its people, its culture, its history – is not well understood in the United States. I would like to try to start changing that. We also want to share America with you, “he said. He clarified Washington’s priorities in his future cooperation with Algiers. “First, we will work to strengthen our bilateral security cooperation to fight terrorism and promote regional stability. Secondly, we want to develop bilateral trade and investment. Finally, we will continue to work with our Algerian partners to foster links between the two peoples and dialogue on topics covering our entire relationship. Of course, diplomatic, political and economic issues are essential, but we also hope to expand our relations in the cultural and educational fields, “he said.

The attack on the Maetiga airport

his morning the 33rd Infantry Brigade, a militia led by Bashir Khalfallah, called Al-Bugra, attacked the airport of Maetiga with 50 armed vehicles seeking for prisoners from the jail housed within the Maetiga compound. The area and the prisoners are currently controlled by the Special Deterrence Forces and during the three hours clashes 15 people had been killed and at least 37 injured. The Rada forces pushed back the Bugra’s militia, with the support of at least 10 other PC-aligned brigades, including the Haithem Tajouri’s Tripoli Revolutionaries Brigade. The Rada spokesman Ahmed Ben Salem said that it was impossible to count the arrested people, adding that three planes of the airport had been damaged. In an official statement the head of the Presidential Council Serraj complained the attack and declared the state of emergency around this area. In a decree the PC also announced the dissolution of the Bugra’s 33rd Infantry Brigade and the relocation of all its equipment to General Staff.

Turk Eximbank mobilises $ 20 million to expand Tunisian-Turkish projects

Turkish Eximbank has financed Tunisian-Turkish textile projects in Tunisia worth US $ 20 million. Speaking at the forum of textile co-operation between Tunisia and Turkey, the ambassador pointed out that the textile sector employs 165 thousand people, adding that the funds allocated by “Turk Exim Bank “will bring the number of jobs in Tunisia up to more than 20 thousand positions.He said Turkey is a strategic partner of Tunisia and will help increase its exports. “We hope that Tunisia will become an exporter of ready-to-wear clothing”.He added that textile is a key and promising sector to boost the economy, recalling its important role in increasing Turkish exports. He pointed out that the participation of 20 Turkish textile manufacturers, officials of the Turkish, Ministry of Commerce and a delegation of the Istanbul Textile and Raw Materials Exporters Association (ITHIB) reflects Turkey’s willingness to establish a platform for co-operation between the Tunisian and Turkish parties in the sector and to invest in Tunisia. For his part, vice-president of the Tunisian Federation of Textile and Clothing (FTTH), Nafaa Neifer recalled that the textile sector has faced several difficulties in recent years, despite its importance in the development of the economy and its ranking at the top of the list of exports.He stressed that Turkish companies will have to consider Tunisia as a destination for investment, job creation and exchange of experiences and not as a market only, calling for developing co-operation in the field of textile spinning and fabrics in Tunisia.He emphasised the need to attract investment, particularly in the fields of textiles, technical textiles and textile spinning, stressing the importance of developing the sector, creativity and research in order to achieve added value.

Acts of vandalism in Nabeul: 11 young people apprehended

The Security units in Nabeul have managed, during the past weekend, to arrest 26 offenders including 11 involved in vandalism committed during the unrest recorded in recent days in the region. According to a security source, the suspects, aged between 15 and 21, were involved in acts of vandalism and looting perpetrated during the late night protest movements in several governorate towns.

The EU- Egypt Association Agreement

In Cairo was held the fifth session of the Subcommittee on Political Matters, Human Rights and Democracy of the Association Agreement between Egypt and the European Union. The meeting took place within the framework of the Partnership Priorities 2017-2020 signed by Egypt and EU and was chaired by Ambassador Raouf Saad and Colin Scicluna. The members discussed about the Middle East peace process, the situations in Syria, Libya and the Arab region. Both sides recognised the necessity of strengthening dialogue and cooperation on all matters of mutual interest. They discussed also cooperation in human rights, rule of law and democracy in order to achieve stability and peace in the Mediterranean area.

Tamazight will be taught to imams

The Minister of Religious Affairs and Wakfs, Mohamed Aissa said that the teaching of Tamazight will be mandatory this year in the three training institutes of Algerian imams in Bouira, Tizi Ouzou and Batna.In this context, the minister explained that students enrolled in institutes will learn the Amazigh language to understand and know their origins and to speak with pride to express their religion. “Today, the Amazigh language is official. It is therefore imperative for us to adapt the training of imams to this new situation. So we decided to open Tamazight sessions in three Imam training institutes in Bouira, Tizi-Ouzou and Batn”, he added.

The US State Department warns its citizens to visit Algeria

The United States of America has ranked Algeria in category 2 of the countries in which US citizens must not go. The US State Department has issued a list of high-risk countries for its nationals. This list ranks Algeria in category 2, where the degree of the terrorist threat is high. “Most attacks take place in rural areas, but attacks in urban areas are possible despite a high and active police presence”, the US State Department adds, adding that “the US government has limited resources to provide emergency services outside the wilaya of Algiers because of travel restrictions imposed by the Algerian government on US officials”.
