US military reviewing security practices after fitness app reveals sensitive info

The US Central Command says it’s in the process of refining its privacy policies after it was reported that a fitness tracking app that maps people’s exercise habits could pose security risks for security forces around the world. Strava, which bills itself as “the social network for athletes” and allows its users to share their running routes, released a newly updated global heatmap last November. But experts and keen observers have recently realized its potential to reveal location patterns of security forces working out at military bases in remote locations.

Defense: Poroshenko approves plan for multinational military exercises for 2018

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has approved a plan for conducting multinational military exercises of the Ukrainian Armed Forces units in Ukraine in 2018 and their participation in exercises outside Ukraine, the press service of the head of state has reported, with reference to a respective presidential decree. “President Petro Poroshenko approved a plan for conducting multinational exercises involving the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the territory of Ukraine and their participation in multinational exercises outside Ukraine in 2018”, the report says. Poroshenko also signed law No. 2270-VIII on approving the decision by the president of Ukraine on admitting units of the armed forces of other states to the territory of Ukraine in 2018 for participation in multinational exercises. According to the documents, a number of multinational exercises on the training of the Armed Forces are to be held in Ukraine this year, in particular, Ukrainian-U.S. exercises Rapid Trident 2018 and Sea Breeze 2018, multinational exercises Light Avalanche 2018 and Clear Sky 2018, as well as Ukrainian-Romanian exercises Riverian 2018.

Cavusoglu, US chose wrong partner

Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said the U.S. has chosen the “wrong partner” in the fight against Daesh terror group in Syria as he referred to the YPG/PKK terror group. To the New York Times, Cavusoglu said: “American reliance on the People’s Protection Units (YPG) is a self-inflicted error when the United States already has a capable partner in Turkey. “We have no doubt that the United States will see the damage this policy is inflicting on the credibility of the NATO alliance and correct its policy by putting its allies and long-term interests first again”. He said Turkey, however, could not afford to wait for “eventual and inevitable course corrections”. Cavusoglu said: “The victory against the group could not have been possible without Turkey’s active contributions”. In the article, Cavusoglu talked about how an impasse between U.S. and Turkey. He said the YPG/PKK terrorists across the borders in Iraq and Syria were using weapons and training provided by the United States. About the Operation Olive Branch, he said that Turkey will continue the operation until terrorist are wiped out. Furthermore, according to Cavusoglu, Turkey will not consent to the creation of separatist enclave or terrorist safe heavens.

North Korea condemns latest U.S. sanctions

North Korea condemned the latest U.S. sanctions announced this week aimed at curbing the Nation’s development nuclear weapons. A North Korean foreign ministry spokesman said the U.S. sanctions are “a manifestation of atrocious intention to throw a wet blanket over the inter-Korean exchange and cooperation and to aggravate the situation” and that the United States should stop such “anachronistic” policy towards North Korea.

ISF arrests suspected terrorist

The leadership of the internal security forces has captured a suspicion of links to the terrorist group of the Islamic state in the eastern city of Bekaa, Majdal Anjar. This is a Lebanese citizen identified by his initials as R.A, said the statement of the ISF. The suspect is wanted for several arrest warrants: terrorism, fraud, arms trade and the transfer of foreigners, in particular from Syria to Lebanon. During the interrogation, the defendant admitted having witnessed the infiltration of a terrorist from the Syria to Lebanon, to carry out bombing operations in Lebanon and smuggling 100 wireless devices for fighters in Syria.

Onodera, Perly call for pressure on North Korea

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera and his French counterpart, Florence Parly, agreed Saturday to maximize pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear and missile development. The ministers also confirmed at a meeting in Tokyo that their countries will cooperate to maintain maritime order and promote Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy. Japan hopes to work to deepen its special partnership with France this year, including through mutual visits by President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Abe, Kono said.

Yemen: last reports from war

As lasted reported by a military official, on Thursday the Houthi army and popular forces  foiled two attempts of US-backed Saudi-paid mercenaries to infiltrate into army sites in Taiz province. The mercenaries was inflicted heavy casualties in Dhubab, Bir-Basha, and Osaifra fronts during their infiltration attempts. Furthermore, three civilians were killed and two others injured when the US-backed Saudi-led aggression airstrike hit their car in Jawf province. On Wednesday, President of the Supreme Political Council Saleh al-Sammad met with sheikhs and notables from Sanhan tribe of Sanaa province. In the meeting, the President and Sanhan’s sheikhs discussed the developments at the national arena in light of the US-Saudi-led coalition’s war on the country and its plots that aimed to undermine Yemen’s security and stability. Mr. President praised the sheikhs and sons of the district for their solidarity and popular cohesion in resisting the foreign invaders.

U.S. dismisses Pakistani assertion that American missiles hit Afghan refugees

The United States on Thursday dismissed a Pakistani allegation that an American drone had fired missiles at an Afghan refugee camp in Kurram district, in the lawless regions bordering Afghanistan. At the same time, Pakistani security officials who sought anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information said the drone strike had killed two members of the militant Haqqani network, which is allied with the Afghan Taliban. Although allies in the war against Islamist militants, the two countries are currently at loggerheads after Washington suspended nearly $2 billion of aid, accusing Islamabad of supporting Taliban militants wreaking havoc in Afghanistan.

Six individuals arrested because of affiliation to terrorist organization

The Interior Ministry reported the arrest of six individuals in the delegation of Sidi Ali Ben Aoun, governorate of Sidi Bouzid for incitement to terrorism. Their age is between 21 and 27 years old, and these individuals are suspected of belonging to a “takfirist” cell of 9 members.The suspects pledged allegiance to the terrorist organization “Daesh” and confessed their continued contact with terrorist elements in Libya and Syria. They held secret meetings in a mosque in the area to encourage young people to join terrorist groups in conflict zones.

Russia’s UN Resolution Obliges Experts to Visit Chemical Attacks Sites

Russia’s draft resolution on the creation of the United Nations Independent Mechanism of Investigation stipulates that the UN experts will have to visit the sites of chemical attacks in order to collect the evidence about the incidents there. “Decides that the UNIMI in conducting its investigations must be guided by high standards established by the CWC [Chemical Weapons Convention] and, accordingly, use the whole spectrum of relevant methods envisaged in the above-mentioned Convention and in particular Part XI of its Annex on Implementation and Verification, which includes investigation, sampling, interviewing witnesses and collection of evidence and information on the site of an incident”, the text of the draft resolution said.
