Iraqi VP Allawi: battle against Islamic State still going on but ways of confrontation will change

in DEFENCE/MIDLE EAST by

During a meeting with a Kuwaiti media delegation on Wednesday, Iraqi Vice President Iyad Allawi stressed that the fight against Islamic State is still going on, but ways of confrontation will change: it will be reshaped to depend on intelligence confrontation and specific operations to eliminate terrorism and protect the unity of the Iraqi society from extremist ideas. Allawi explained that such extremist thoughts stemmed from sectarian quotas and abuses, which targeted some segments of the society and policies built on reactions, which were unacceptable. He also expressed his regret that the political, social and economic situation in Iraq is not on the right track, adding that Iraq is rich in men and wealth, but money was wasted due to the absence of adequate management, as well as the spread of corruption and the lack of accountability and deterrent legislation. Allawi voiced his appreciation and thanks to Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, for his constant support to Iraq and for his wisdom in dealing with Arab issues. The Iraqi leader also praised the wisdom of Kuwait’s political leadership and its constant quest to resolve disputes in the Arab world.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Davos says terrorism, climate change grave threats

in DEFENCE/FAR EAST by

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday insisted that terrorism and climate change are the biggest threats that the entire world is facing in the present time, and added that the “artificial distinction” made by some people between “good and bad terrorists is equally dangerous as terrorism”. Delivering a keynote address at the opening session of the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in the Swiss mountain resort of Davos, PM Modi said India’s position on the menace of terrorism is well known and he would not like to elaborate on that. Issues of peace, security and stability have also emerged as serious global challenges, he added. Underlining the importance of technology, the prime minister said data is the real wealth in the present era. “Today, data is a real wealth and it is being said that whoever acquires and controls the data will have hegemony in the future. The global flow of data is creating big opportunities as well as challenges”, he said. He added that technology-driven transformation has been deeply affecting people’s way of thinking, working, international groups, politics, and economy. Talking about social media, Modi said, “The example of breaking, addition, and twisting of technology is being seen in the form of social media”. Protectionism is rearing its head and there is risk of new tariff and non-tariff barriers coming up, the prime minister said, as he mentioned that division is not the solution to this problem of anti-globalisation. He also made a comparison between World Economic Forum meeting in 1997 and 2018. “Last time an Indian PM came to Davos was in 1997 when Deve Gowda ji had come. That time our GDP was little more than 400 billion dollars, now its more than six times. That forum’s vision was about the building of network society. Then there was no Euro; very few people knew about Osama bin Laden. Google was not invented, if someone would search Amazon on Internet then search results would throw information about rivers and forests. Tweeting was the work of birds”. Referring to this year’s WEF’s theme of ‘Creating a shared future in a fractured world’, the prime minister said the Indian philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (the world is one family) has become more relevant in today’s time to address fissures and distances in the world. “India has always believed in values of integration and unity or ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ which means the entire world is one family. It is relevant to bridge distances. We have always believed in uniting humanity, not breaking it, there are some explosive forces in the environment that are capable of creating bEU-India summit, arriers to development, world peace and stability. However, if we stand as one unit, we can help bridge the fractures created by these”, he said. He further called for retrospection on these obstacles and said it is high time we stand in unison and examine whether, in any way, we are encouraging the existence of these barriers. Modi also told the world leaders that democracy in India was not just a “political system” but a way of living. “We in India are proud of our democracy and diversity. For a society with diverse religions, cultures, languages, attires and cuisines; democracy is not just a political system but a way of living…In India, democracy, demography and dynamism are giving shape to development and destiny”

Is Turkey advancing in Syria with German tanks?

in DEFENCE/EUROPE by

On Saturday Turkey started its second campaign in northern Syria. In their offensive against the Kurdish militia YPG also german Leopard 2 tanks are in use. An armament expert from the German Armed Forces confirmed that the tanks Leopard 2 A4 showed in the pictures are from German production. The federal government did not want to confirm the reports. “Apart from the images from the media that you all know, we have no own insights into the use of Leopard tanks”, said Defense Department spokesman Holger Neumann. From 2006 to 2011, Turkey received 354 Leopard 2 tanks and has more battle tanks than the German Army. The restraint of the Federal Government in view of the continuing Turkish offensive is increasingly met with criticism. “The federal government should unmistakably condemn the violent war of aggression of Turkey”, demanded the left-wing faction leader in the Bundestag, Sahra Wagenknecht.

Three French jihadists detained in Iraq face death penalty

in DEFENCE/EUROPE by

Captured in July after the fall of Mosul, the three women are awaiting trial. On Sunday, a German jihadist was sentenced to death in Iraq. Three French women are being held in Iraq for joining the Islamic State group. They are currently awaiting trial, in a country where they risk the death penalty. The first, aged 28 from the Lille region, left in the Syrian-Iraqi zone in 2015 with her husband, who was reportedly killed. The second woman, Melina, 27, from Seine-et-Marne left France in 2015. “We do not know what exactly he is accused of, what are his conditions of detention and if he has the means to defend himself”, said his lawyer Martin Pradel. “We expect from France, if Melina was to be sentenced to death, the same intensity of mobilization that it has deployed or deploys for other French sentenced to death, including Serge Atlaoui”, said his lawyers William Bourdon and Vincent Brengarth. The French authorities have made intensive diplomatic efforts to prevent the execution of Serge Atlaoui, who was sentenced to death in Indonesia where he is accused of drug trafficking.

Taliban want Farah as a base

in DEFENCE/MIDLE EAST by

The governor for the western province of Farah warned that Taliban wants to change Farah into its base. Farah residents are worrying  because the militants have intensified attacks in several districts, but the governor downplays it. “Taliban cannot dare attack the security forces in daylight, but they wage attacks on them with sophisticated weapons overnight”, Mohammad Aref Shahjahan said Tuesday. He emphasized that the insurgent group wants to establish its base by intensifying attack, but said the government forces have control on the province. “This is why Taliban is destabilizing Farah in order to create a corridor to the south-west region. Their plan has attracted attention of their supporters”. The provincial council had earlier warned against the fall of the province if the government did not prevent Taliban’s attacks. According to some military, Farah is instable because of Iran border and drugs trade. Representatives of Farah in the parliament, accuse the government of hiding realities about the security situation. “Situation is not good in Farah, Taliban has its own custom office and receives taxes from trucks”, said Samiullah Samim, a lawmaker from Farah.

61 people have been arrested by the Rada Special Deterrence Force, who are suspected of being involved in the attack on the Mitiga airport last week. Rada said that the militants were from Tajura and attacked the airport compound in order to break out their commanders from Mitiga jail. Several demonstrations have been held in Tajura calling the release of those people, who have been detained only for suspicions and without any proof. The 33rd Brigade, responsible of the attack and led by Khalfallah, called Al-Bugra or “the cow”, said that it would ignore the government decision to disband their group. During the attack 20 people were killed and dozens injured and the airport reopened in the last two days.

Hamas is cooperating with Hezbollah against Israel

in DEFENCE/MIDLE EAST by

After Israel has demonstrated that it can virtually neutralize any rocket launched south of Israel from Gaza and develop what is dubbed “an underground iron dome” to combat the growing threat of Hamas terrorist tunnels, the Palestinian terrorist group is threatening Israel from north. Last week, a Hamas official escaped an attack in the city of Sidon in southern Lebanon and this weekend the Hezbollah-affiliated newspaper al-Akhbar reported that Lebanese intelligence found that Ahmed Battiyah, a Dutch Muslim, had been recruited in Amsterdam by the Mossad and charged with preparing the plot. Israeli Intelligence Minister Yisrael Katz responded to the accusations of Hamas and Hezbollah on a “Zionist plot” denying any involvement in the assassination attempt. Whether or not Israel is involved in the attempted murder will probably remain an open question, but the fact of defense minister Avigdor Liberman is that Hamas is cooperating with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and is building “terrorist infrastructure” in the country.
