Macedonia and Albania cooperation against terrorism

Skopje and Pristina concluded a memorandum of police cooperation in the field of terrorism. The memorandum has been signed Saturday by Macedonian and Albanian Interior Ministers, respectively, Oliver Spasovski and Fatmir Xhafaj, in Ohrid. The document foresees exchange of information of individuals and groups considered potential perpetrators of terrorist actions both in the two countries and in the whole region. Macedonia’s Interior Ministry expressed to consider the terrorism as a global threat as well as a risk for the countries in the Balkans. Thus, the memorandum envisages the terrorism from a preventive and repressive way. Spasovski stated Interior Ministries ‘are actively cooperating in protection and control of the border but also providing easy flow of people and goods’. From his part, Xhafaj noted that the agreement is on cooperation as for present than for future. Moreover, the two countries ‘should follow the excellent relations between as appropriate to two neighbors and our cooperation as ministries to follow those principles and thus contribute to greater security that can be a positive example for the region. The meeting concerned also the cooperation between Macedonia and Albania in the fields of drug trafficking, arms smuggling, exchange of information, experiences and positives practices, promotion of cooperation bilaterally and in the regional framework. In addition, Spasovski stated to support the initiative of the Albanian Police to establish a regional center for police cooperation of the Western Balkan countries.

Fresh sanctions on Hezbollah

The Trump administration announced today that a new session on Hizbullah will be held in Africa and the Middle East; in particular, the Treasury Department has announced that it has seen a network of companies and individuals in Lebanon, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Liberia and other countries connected to the Hezbollah financier, Adham Tabaja. Difficulties block US activities and prevent Americans from doing business with one of the people and seven companies. According to one of the officials, with this move Trump aims not only to limit the operations of the terrorist group, but also a pressure on Iran by hindering the increase in its influence in the region.

$2.68 billion in humanitarian assistance

The Lebanese government plans to receive $ 2.68 billion in humanitarian assistance and investment in the country’s infrastructure and public services as part of the Lebanese Crisis Response Plan (LCRP). The LCRP 2018 package was announced on Thursday and funds will be used to provide humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees, who are around 1.9 million, to Lebanese refugees and vulnerable Palestinians, as well as to invest in Lebanon’s infrastructure, public services and local economy. Over 123 national and international partners have pledged financial support to avoid a sharp deterioration of the country’s humanitarian conditions and infrastructure and, following the renewal of the commitment, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Philippe Lazzarini, said that preserving the stability of the Lebanon means maintaining tolerance, diversity and stability in the region.

Pristina-Belgrade dialogue to be resumed in late February

Avni Arifi, Chief of Kosovo delegation in technical talks with Serbia, announced to online media Telegrafi that the EU-facilitated talks between Pristina and Belgrade will resume in Brussels by the end of February. Arifi said the date was yet to be set but the resumption of the dialogue is expected in late February, after the cancellation of talks following the killing of the Kosovo Serb politician, Oliver Ivanovic, on 16 January in Mitrovica North. Such dialogue is oriented both on the integration of Serbian community within Kosovo legal frame, and the normalization of relations between the two countries.

Bhutan opened a consulate general’s office in Assam

Bhutan opened a consulate general’s office in Assam’s capital on Friday, a day before the first Global Investors’ Summit here is to be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi. It is the second country in the Indian subcontinent, after Bangladesh, to do so. Bangladesh had set up its consulate general here last year. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Bhutan-India relationship, Bhutanese foreign minister Damcho Dorji and Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal opened the consulate in the presence of Bhutanese PM Tshering Tobgay. Dorji announced a Bhutan-Guwahati-Singapore flight service would be launched.

El-Sisi will travel to Oman on Sunday

For the first time the Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi will visit Oman on Sunday, in order to meet the Sultan Qaboos Bin Said. According to the official statement of the presidency spokesman Bassam Rady the two leaders will discuss about bilateral and regional issues. The meeting’s general aim is to consolidate the cooperation between the two countries in several fields, especially after the recent political development in Lebanon. El-Sisi will meet also a number of top Omani officials in order to boost historical and brotherly relations between Omani and Egyptian people.

Britain’s May gets 9 billion pounds in China deals, Xi promises to build on ‘golden era’

British Prime Minister Theresa May left China today with deals worth more than 9.3 billion pounds ($13.26 billion), at the end of a three-day trade mission where President Xi Jinping pledged to upgrade their “golden era” in relations. Britain, which is trying to reinvent itself as a global trading nation after Brexit, put China first on the list of countries that Britain wants to sign a free trade agreement with. China, for its part, sees Britain as an important ally in its call for more open global markets. Chinese investment is helping Britain develop infrastructure and create jobs, with some 50,000 British businesses importing goods from China and more than 10,000 sell their goods to China.

Vehicle ploughs into pedestrians in Shanghai, injuring 18

Eighteen people, including the driver, were injured today when a minivan caught fire and mounted the pavement in a busy part of central Shanghai and ploughed into pedestrians. Investigations showed the fire was caused by a 40-year-old driver who was smoking a cigarette inside the vehicle while illegally transporting highly flammable substances. Given the dynamics of the incident it was feared it was a terrorist attack.

Central African Republic requests DRC to extradite antibalaka leader

The Central African Republic made to Democratic Republic of the Congo (RDC) an extradition request towards “Romaric”, one of the leaders of the groups anti-Balaka of the city of Bangassou in the south-oriental CAR (the anti-Balaka’s groups compete with the armed rival Fulani or pro-muslim). Romaric is runned away from CAR since december 2017 and gone to the close Democratic Republic of the Congo, and then here he was arrested. “They were arrested by the Congolese army in Buta, in the province of border of Bas-Uele, in the North of the Democratic Republic of the Congo” told on Friday to AFP Florence Marchal, spokesman of the mission UN in DRC, Monusco. The leader anti-balaka was considered in prison for war crimes, murder and criminal plot.

EU prepared to accept both Serbia and Kosovo

The EU would accept for six Western Balkans countries to enter the organization, according to Financial Times: Albania, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.
