Mineral prices, keys to the export boom

After four consecutive years of decline, the country’s exports in 2017 grew 19 percent, rising from 31,757 million to 37,800 million dollars, according to the Dane. In volume, they grew from 137 million to 153.5 million net tons, an increase of 12.5 percent over 2016. “All the product groups registered positive variations, which shows that we are diversifying our export basket and reaching more and more markets. It is the confirmation of the reactivation of our economy”, said the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, María Lorena Gutiérrez. However, the Analdex association expressed concern that the entry of more dollars will generate revaluation, and in this way the necessary diversification of the country’s external sales will be forgotten.

The EU’s enlargement strategy neglects Kosovo

The recent document about the EU’s enlargement strategy apparently does not contain much mention of Kosovo, according to Pristina press. Kosovo is mentioned only in passages concerning the dialogue with Serbia. The article states that this is a “worse position for Kosovo than before”, and the reason is the presence of different positions in the EU (indeed, 5 members do not recognize Kosovo, such as Spain), but also the lack of progress in Kosovo. The documents focus particularly on Serbia and Montenegro which are “planned to join EU in 2025”, but also on Albania, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Medical experts: Stop Dengvaxia autopsies

A group of  doctors, academicians, scientists and health advocates yesterday asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to stop the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) from performing  autopsies on children who allegedly died after being vaccinated with Dengvaxia . University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH),  stated that the dead of the 14 children who were submitted to Dengaxia is not related to the vaccine. Roque said that UP-PGH was iaricated by the Department of Health to conduct a study on the 14 dead, going ahead saing that parents could have e a sight of relief following the findings of the team. Later DOJ order to PAO to stop performing autopsies on these children and to leave the matter of determining the cause of death. After thet PGH offered the expertise of its staff to do free medical autopsies on children who died after receiving the vaccine, noting if parents do not want to avail of PGH services. After thoroughly looking into the clinical records and history of the patients, the panel found that three of the 14 children had developed dengue shock syndrome after vaccination, with two cases associated with vaccine failure.

Palace to UP protesters: Don’t waste taxpayers’ money

The Government reminded protesting students of the University of the Philippines (UP), who demonstrated against Duterte’s cha-cha, his martial law in Mindanao and his attacks to press freedom during the National Day of Walkout Against Tyranny and Dictatorship on Thursday, to waste taxpayers’ money by walking out of their classes. Youth Movement aims to resist the continuing attempts to undermine, pressure or otherwise render ineffective the courts, Congress, Office of the Ombudsman, Commission on Human Rights, working press, political opposition and ordinary citizens critical of government policies and programs. Duterte on Thursday threatened to replace protesting UP students with those from the Lumad communities in Mindanao. “If you don’t want to go to school, get out of there because I will bring [indigenous] students who are bright and put them there. A lot of Filipinos want to have an excellent education”, Duterte said.

Teenage boy and woman killed in LoC firing by Indian

A woman and a teenage boy were killed and six others wounded in two districts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after Indian troops resorted to shelling from across the restive Line of Control (LoC) on Sunday, civil and military officials said. “Indian troops resorted to unprovoked firing in Nezapir sector targeting civil population. A citizen embraced shahadat while 2 children [were] injured,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported in a brief statement. The military’s media wing claimed that Pakistani forces responded ‘effectively’.Nezapir sector is located in Haveli district. Haveli Deputy Commissioner Kashif Hussain told Dawn that shelling began at around 11am and continued till 4pm. “Indians used both small and heavy weapons but got a befitting response from our side”, he claimed. Hussain said a 16-year-old boy Rafaqat, son of Zakar, was herding cattle in Akhori Bala village when he fell victim to Indian shelling and lost his life. In Kairni village of the same sector, eight-year-old Usama and his seven-year-old sister Mavia were injured, and shifted to a military-run health facility in Kahuta, the district headquarters, he added. In Kotli district, Indian troops fired mortar shells at Tarkundi, Plani and Kalar Galla villages of Nakyal sector in the afternoon, “without any provocation, targeting unarmed and innocent civilian populations”, said Nakyal Assistant Commissioner Waleed Anwar.

Minister of State for Information visit to China on the invitation of Chinese Government

Minister of State for Information, Broadcasting, National History and Literary Heritage Ms. Marriyum Aurangzeb who is on a visit to China on the invitation of Chinese Government, met Jiang Jianguo, Vice Minister of the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of CPC, and Minister of State Council Information Office (SCIO) on Sunday. Welcoming the Minister of State, Jiang Jianguo said that it is a pleasure to receive her on her first official visit to China, added that their two countries share a high level of mutual trust, respect and friendship. He further said that CPEC, being flagship project of Belt and Road Initiative, is a project of our shared future.She informed that irrespective of party affiliations, all political parties in the country support CPEC. The minister also assured that the Pakistani government is taking all out efforts to insure security to all Chinese nationals. Expressing her desire for enhanced cultural and media contacts by sharing cultural norms and exchanging media delegations, she called for closer co-operation in the field. The minister further said that Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its manifestations and forms and has achieved success in combating it, which is borne out by the fact that terrorist attacks which were 2600 in 2013, had reduced by 82% to 160.

Winter Olympics: North Korea presses ahead with military parade

North Korea has defended plans for a large-scale military parade scheduled for the day before the Winter Olympics in South Korea. Pyongyang’s annual military parade to mark the founding of its armed forces has taken place in April for 40 years. From 2018, however, it has been changed to 8 February – when athletes will gather in Pyeongchang for the opening ceremony the following day. North Korea said that no-one had the right to take issue with its plans, rejecting views that the event is provocative.

North Korea earned $200 million from banned exports, sends arms to Syria, Myanmar – U.N. report

A UN report said North Korea violated United Nations sanctions in 2017 earning nearly $200 million with banned commodity exportation, in particular coal to Russia, China, South Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam and weapons to Syria and Myanmar.

Army parades 26 repentant Boko Haram fighters

The Nigerian Army yesterday paraded 26 ‘repentant’ Boko Haram members in Maiduguri, Borno State, after they surrendered to the military authorities. The former terrorists surrendered in Damboa Local Government Area last week and after they were taken to Maiduguri for de-radicalization. More than 2300 fighters have surrendered in the last 13 months following intensive military action and seizure of the Sambisa forest, the main enclave of the insurgents. Recent statistics reveal that over 25,000 people have been killed in the insurgency since 2009 and at least 2.4 million Nigerians displaced in the northeast states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno.

Montenegrin participation in KFOR mission Kosovo

In view of the participation of members of the Army of Montenegro in the KFOR mission in Kosovo, Serbian Defense Minister Aleksandar Vulin urged Montenegro not to send officers to because it did not ask Serbia for permission, and it would not help dialogue or stabilization in the region, nor improve relations with the state of Serbia. Vulin also reminded Montenegrin authorities that Kosovo and Metohija are part of the state of Serbia under UN Resolution 1244. Military analyst Aleksandar Radic stated that the participation in the KFOR mission in Kosovo would not be a problem in relations between Montenegro and Serbia and that Montenegro commits to participate in international missions due to the alliance with NATO.
