Armed attack, airstrikes leaves IS main funder, others killed in Hawija

A main funder of Islamic State has been killed in an armed attack in southwest of Kirkuk, a paramilitary official said on Friday. “A main IS funder in Hawija, who has several titles including abu Hamza, was killed on Friday in an armed attack that targeted his vehicle on an agricultural road in the town. One of his companions was injured”, Jabbar al-Maamouri, of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces), told AlSumaria News. “According to the available information, the leader had money to provide the group with cash in order to secure its needs. His murder is considered another blow to the militants in Hawija”, he added. Earlier on Friday, the Iraqi air force urged the militants to turn in themselves in airdropped thousands of messages in Hawija.

Over 2,000 civilians’ bodies recovered in western Mosul: Officer

More than 2,000 bodies of civilians were recovered since liberation of Mosul city, an Iraqi officer said on Friday. “Rescue teams of Nineveh’s civil defense department have recovered more than 2,100 bodies of civilians from under the destroyed houses in the western side of Mosul, especially in the Old City”, Lt. Saad Hamed, an officer from the department, told Anadolu Agency. The teams, according to Hamed, “face obstacles including logistic ones related to the equipments, as well as security issues regarding presence of tunnels and shelters where IS militants are still hiding”. The recovery of bodies is expected to end in two months, Hamed said adding that between 400-500 bodies are likely to be still under the rubble, depending on the requests from families who inquire about bodies of their relatives.

Iran UN Envoy Condemns Violence against Myanmar Muslims

Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gholam Ali Khoshroo strongly condemned the ongoing violence against Muslims in Myanmar, slamming the plight of Rohingya as an example of victimization of innocent people by extremism and intolerance. Addressing a High-Level UN Forum on the Culture of Peace, held on Thursday, Khoshroo condemned the ongoing violence against Muslim people of Myanmar and called for an immediate halt to those crimes. Amid such terrifying events in Myanmar, thousands of Muslims have been killed and hundreds of thousands of others have been force to leave their homes, he deplored. Describing the culture of peace as the essence of the UN Charter, Khoshroo bemoaned the fact that unilateralism and force in the international relations have resulted in instability, insecurity and spread of terrorism and extremism in the world.

OSCE PA to hold discussions on Nagorno-Karabakh

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly will hold discussions on Nagorno-Karabakh in its next sessions, the Assembly’s President, Christine Muttonen, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, told reporters today. “The Parliamentary Assembly is a platform on which problems, in particular, conflicts in the OSCE area are discussed. The OSCE has a special representative for the South Caucasus through whom the organization keeps the [Nagorno-Karabakh problem] in focus. This issue is discussed and negotiated. The resolution of the problem leads to the normalization of communication and relations among countries, and this is a positive fact”, Muttonen added.

Iran under ‘most robust’ nuclear inspection: IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has defended the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries, saying the Islamic Republic is under “the world’s most robust” nuclear inspection regime. IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano made the remarks at a panel discussion on global nuclear governance in the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia earlier this week amid Washington’s pressure on the agency to request access to Iran’s military sites.The IAEA “is now verifying and monitoring Iran’s implementation of its nuclear-related commitments under that agreement, acting as the eyes and ears of the international community”, the UN nuclear chief said. Under the deal, Amano said, Iran has accepted restrictions on its nuclear program and the IAEA has expanded access to its sites and information.

The Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan General Qamar Javed Bajwa has said the country cannot fight Afghanistan’s war in Pakistan, apparently gesturing towards the demands by Kabul and Washington to eliminate the sanctuaries of the Taliban and Haqqani terrorist network based in the key cities of the country. The remarks by Gen. Bajwa could be a gesture of Pakistan to reject the calls for the elimination of the terror sanctuaries as he said the country would prefer to remain impartial in the ongoing violence in Afghanistan. The US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had earlier said Pakistan is expected to “take decisive action against militant groups based in Pakistan that are a threat to the region.” The pressures by Washington on Pakistan regarding the safe havens of the terror groups are on the rise after the announcement of the new strategy by US President Donald Trump last month.

Syria’s state news agency says a convoy of 40 trucks carrying 1,000 tons of humanitarian aid has arrived in Deir el-Zour after troops secured a corridor to the eastern city. The land convoy is the first since Syrian government forces and allied militiamen breached a nearly three-year-old siege by the Islamic State group on government-held parts of the city on Tuesday. The convoy reached a garrison on the southwestern edge of the city Thursday, carrying thousands of food baskets, fruits and vegetables, medicine, school books and stationary.

Adel Al-Jubeir, Saudi Foreign Minister, said that Iran’s talk of a rapprochement with Saudi Arabia was laughable. He told that Iran would first have to change its policies before any diplomatic thaw could happen in order to respect international law. Al-Jubeir added “At this time, we do not see… that they’re serious about wanting to be a good neighbor”. He said that diplomatic exchanges with Iran over arrangements for the Hajj did not represent a normalization of relations and that such contacts had nothing to do with politics. Sara Bazoobandi, a senior lecturer on international political economy at Regent’s University London, is quite pessimistic and don’t think there is going to be a change whitout an immediate interest. Al-Jubeir also said that should the rift between Qatar and the Anti-Terror Quartet — Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain — continue for two years, then “so be it”. Others agreed that the diplomatic rift over Doha’s alleged support of terror groups could be a protracted dispute. Khalid Al-Hail, spokesman of the Qatari opposition, said the situation is likely to lead to regime change within the Gulf state. “The continued standoff is causing hardship within Qatar, provoking civil unrest and increasingly the likelihood that the emir will be replaced in the near future (through) a coup by members of the ruling Al-Thani family”, he told Arab News.

The Syrian map has drastically changed since the end of 2016 after the Syrian opposition lost swaths of land to the regime, and the regions previously controlled by Daesh were handed over to the Syrian affiliate of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), the PYD, which, backed by the U.S., has established control over areas in Hasakah, Deir Ez-Zor, Raqqa, Jarabulus and Aleppo. Attempts by PKK terrorists to seize control over the two biggest operation border crossings of Bab al-Salamah and Bab al-Hawa are ongoing. The U.S.- PYD alliance has prioritized its goal of seizing control over the biggest operational border crossings with Turkey as PKK terrorists continue to target Bab al-Hawa and Bab al-Salamah with mortars and missiles. The PKK is currently listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. So it is in open war with Turkey. According to the journal, PKK terrorists, who occupy approximately 600 kilometers of the border with Turkey, are trafficking humans and smuggling weapons and fuel across the border through underground tunnels they dug in close vicinity to border gates. The tunnels also serve as a passageway for foreign terrorists from Europe and Turkey as they cross into Syria to receive training in terror camps established in PKK-occupied regions.

Houthi spokesman calls on Yemen’s Saleh to implement 12 requests

Mohamed Ali Al Houthi, the head of the supreme Revolutionary Council of the Houthis, admitted, in response to the interview of the former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, that there were discrepancies in the institutions under their control. Mohammed Abdul Salam, spokesman of the militias, recalled the twelve points earlier put forward by their leader. The major clause within these points is the activation of the emergency law to confront the so-called “fifth column” and the opening of recruitment in the army. Saleh had denied in his statements the existence of any differences with the Houthis. However, the debates between the deposed president and some of the leaders of Houthi militias have returned. According to Mohamed Ali al-Houthi, Houthi leaders responded to Saleh and stressed the existence of imbalances in the institutions of the “state of Sanaa”, but also called him to remedy to these predicaments through what they called a committee of scholars.
