SPD proposes compromise in refugee policy

in Senza categoria by

One of the most difficult issues in the Grand Coalition talks is the family reunion of refugees. SPD politician Burkhard Lischka made a compromise proposal, but there is still no agreement. Time is short, and before the negotiators of the Union and the SPD are ready to form a government, there are even more big issues until the end of the discussions. Union and SPD have so far found no solution to this point. There is still no agreement, as the news agency DPA learned from the SPD negotiating team. The “Bild” newspaper had previously reported that both sides had achieved a breakthrough here: the family reunification for refugees with limited protection status should be suspended. Asylum seekers who receive protection in Germany are allowed to bring their spouses and underage children. On the other hand, recognized underage refugees are allowed to bring their parents with them. While the Union wants to prohibit this group to reunite with family members, the SPD in the election campaign promised to make family reunification possible for refugees.

The frame of the draft law on asylum and immigration has been communicated to the associations

in EUROPE/POLITICS by

The frame of the draft law on asylum and immigration has been communicated to the associations who care about migrants and refugees. At the first meeting between Edouard Philippe and the world of aid to migrants, the Prime Minister promised that they have the text developed by the Ministry of the Interior before meeting again. Even if the associations do not expect much, the meeting on Thursday is supposed to open and close a “consultation”. Emmanuel Macron is, indeed, expected on Tuesday 16 January, to announce the conclusions. The two most commented elements of the first versions of the law were the doubling of the duration of administrative detention and the establishment of a list of safe third countries to justify referrals without examination of the file. The first point is still in the text sent today, but the second was removed by decision of the Head of State. Still, this frame only gives the main lines. The letter accompanying the Vademecum states that “the questions relating to the December 12 file on the Review of Administrative Situations will be examined in a specific follow-up group proposed by the Prime Minister”.

China’s factory inflation slowest in 13 months and this gives policymakers a freer hand to focus on industrial overcapacity and pollution. China’s producer price index (PPI) slid to the lowest level since November 2016 last month with 4,9%, because the government’s war against winter smog dented factory demand for raw materials in a sign the world’s second largest economy has started to slow. The data also showed consumer inflation accelerating less than expected and remaining well within the central bank’s comfort zone. The government repression on smog in the heavily industrialized northern provinces has in fact hit demand for raw materials and have weighed on investment. While pollution curbs have had a disinflationary effect on producer prices, the resulting supply disruptions have triggered fears of supply shortages in some segments, giving a major boost to upward pressure to prices.

Is Washington preparing to play the Taiwan card with Beijing again?

in ASIA/POLITICS by

The bills still need US Senate and presidential endorsement to become law, but if passed that will mean a fundamental change in the Whashingon-Beijing relations. The Taiwan Travel Act in fact is designed to improve official exchanges between Washington and Taipei and it would allow US government officials to travel to Taiwan and meet their counterparts and vice versa. Such meetings have been avoided since Washington shifted diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979. The other piece of legislation instead aims to help Taiwan regain observer status at the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of the World Health Organisation. The two bills show many forces in the US are attempting to flare up the Taiwan question once again and use it as leverage against China.
