The EU- Egypt Association Agreement

In Cairo was held the fifth session of the Subcommittee on Political Matters, Human Rights and Democracy of the Association Agreement between Egypt and the European Union. The meeting took place within the framework of the Partnership Priorities 2017-2020 signed by Egypt and EU and was chaired by Ambassador Raouf Saad and Colin Scicluna. The members discussed about the Middle East peace process, the situations in Syria, Libya and the Arab region. Both sides recognised the necessity of strengthening dialogue and cooperation on all matters of mutual interest. They discussed also cooperation in human rights, rule of law and democracy in order to achieve stability and peace in the Mediterranean area.

China’s natural gas imports hit record high in December as winter bites

China’s natural gas imports soared to a record high in December to battle a winter supply crisis. Gas imports, including pipeline imports and tanker shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG), came in at 7.89 million tonnes, 20 per cent above November’s previous record of 6.55 million tonnes, data from the General Administration of Customs showed. Imports for the whole of 2017 jumped 27 per cent from 2016 to a record 68.57 million tonnes. Crude oil imports instead eased sharply from November. December’s crude oil imports hit 33.7 million tonnes, or about 7.94 million barrels per day (bpd), compared to November’s 9.01 million bpd. Buying eased in December because refiners and fuel distributors drew on inventories after hefty stockpiling in the previous month.

Revisions to Chinese constitution will be key task for top cadres at plenum

A closed-door meeting of the Communist Party’s most powerful cadres begins on Thursday to discuss revisions to the constitution that include the addition of President Xi Jinping’s political theory. It will be the second full meeting of around 400 party elites from the Central Committee following a major reshuffle at the party congress in October. The two-day meeting will discuss making the first amendments to the constitution for 14 years, which will then be endorsed by the National People’s Congress (NPC). Beijing-based source familiar with the issue confirmed to the South China Morning Post that “Xi Jinping Thought” would be included in the preamble of the constitution. The meeting would, however, also include discussion of a revision that will pave the way for the new National Supervision Commission to be established, the source said. The all-encompassing anti-graft Commission will have huge prosecution power and is being set up under a national supervision law that is expected to be submitted to the NPC for passage.

The Schengen path will pass through Turkish borders

Bulgaria wants to show Europe that it is ready to join the Schengen area. The country intends to demonstrate it by strengthening its border control with Turkey: indeed, Bulgarian authorities already state that the migrants who crossed it has fallen by more than 80% since 2015. The fact is that EU does not allow Bulgaria to enter Schengen area because of non-respect of all the needed criteria.

Borissov and Juncker about Bulgaria’s EU Presidency

During a joint conference European Commission President Juncker and Bulgarian Prime Minister Borissov discussed the priorities of the Bulgaria’s EU Presidency semester. They agreed on the aim of a higher connection between Western Balkans and the rest of Europe. Juncker, concerning Bulgaria, showed himself pleased by the progresses achieved in the economy, but that there is still some work to do in order to join the ERM-2. About Turkey, he stated that of course an attempt should be made to normalize relations, but that progress will not be achieved until there are journalists in Turkish prisons.

Tamazight will be taught to imams

The Minister of Religious Affairs and Wakfs, Mohamed Aissa said that the teaching of Tamazight will be mandatory this year in the three training institutes of Algerian imams in Bouira, Tizi Ouzou and Batna.In this context, the minister explained that students enrolled in institutes will learn the Amazigh language to understand and know their origins and to speak with pride to express their religion. “Today, the Amazigh language is official. It is therefore imperative for us to adapt the training of imams to this new situation. So we decided to open Tamazight sessions in three Imam training institutes in Bouira, Tizi-Ouzou and Batn”, he added.

The US State Department warns its citizens to visit Algeria

The United States of America has ranked Algeria in category 2 of the countries in which US citizens must not go. The US State Department has issued a list of high-risk countries for its nationals. This list ranks Algeria in category 2, where the degree of the terrorist threat is high. “Most attacks take place in rural areas, but attacks in urban areas are possible despite a high and active police presence”, the US State Department adds, adding that “the US government has limited resources to provide emergency services outside the wilaya of Algiers because of travel restrictions imposed by the Algerian government on US officials”.

New strategy for peace

The High Peace Council (HPC) said it has outlined a new strategy as part of the peace and reconciliation efforts with the armed oppositions including the Taliban. Habiba Sarabi, the Deputy Chairperson of the High Peace Council said that last year, for six months the HPC worked hard for peace and bringing stability in the country. The strategic objectives in the new policy include negotiation with armed people who fighting against the government, national consensus and monitoring on the political agreements agreements between the government and oppositions. Sarabi stressed that they have set up some advisory boards for the High Peace Council including women, youth and religious scholars boards as a move to take the public advisory for peace process. “We have to change culture of violence to culture of peace, from homes, villages and local level”, Habiba Sarabi said.

7 policemen killed in Farah

A member of Farah Provincial Council said that Seven Afghan police officers were killed by Taleban while two surrendered. The attack took place early in Friday morning while the policemen were in their highway security checkpoint in Bala Buluk in Farah provinces. The Taliban insurgents also took all weapons and ammunitions with them, he said, adding that Taliban insurgents also sustained casualties. However he gave no exact numbers of Taliban insurgents killed or wounded. The official said that Taliban were equipped with modern weapons, and that’s the main reason of wars in the province. However, in a separate incident, the Afghan security forces have killed three Taliban insurgents in Qala-i-Kah district of the province.

15 airstrikes launched on Dhamar

The US-backed Saudi-led aggression coalition warplanes on Friday launched 15 strikes on Dhamar province.Three airstrikes were launched on the stadium sports in Dhamar city, causing the destruction of its stands and sports clubs. Other two air raids were carried out on the Central Security Forces camp in the customs neighborhood, causing heavy damage to the houses of the neighboring citizens. The air aggression waged two raids on military police camp in Dhamar-alGarn, and three airstrikes hit Industrial Technical Institute in Thi-sehr area of Ans district, causing the destruction of workshops, laboratories and halls of the Institute. The last five airstrikes were waged on Samh camp of Ans district.
