Yemen: the empty port in a starving country

in ECONOMY/MIDLE EAST by

After the international pressing orchestrated by international organisations over Saudi Arabia, to lift the blockade on Yemenite ports in order to stop the ongoing humanitarian disaster, it seems that nothing has changed. Surprisingly, there is no indication of aid or commerce coming into Yemen through the key port of Hodeidah, in spite of the Saudi pledge to stop the blockade for a month from the 20th of December. Two weeks after the announcements, the port remains empty. No merchants or reliefs vessels bringing first-necessity supplies were seen anchored at its harbour. The port manager declares that the blockade is still in effect. It is useful to underline that Yemen depends on imports, about  90% of its needs are from imports. Yemen, the poorer country of the Middle East, is struck by one of the world worst humanitarian disaster.  Over 75% of Yemenite’s 27 million population, including 11.3 million children, are in dire need of humanitarian aid, as the UN said ten days after Saudis had supposedly lifted the blockade. It is estimated that over 60% of Yemenis are on the brink of starvation.  The representatives of humanitarian and relief agencies emphasized the importance of lifting the blockade immediately. For them, in order to really demonstrate the willingness to put an end to the humanitarian disaster, the port of Hodeidah must be open all-year long to commercial and reliefs shipments, without conditions or timeline to that.

Trump is about to put his mark on the US nuclear arsenal

in AMERICAS/ENERGY/POLITICS by

The Pentagon is putting the finishing touches on the first comprehensive review of US nuclear forces in nearly eight years. It’s shaping up as President Donald Trump’s signature nuclear weapons initiative in the face of a growing North Korean nuclear threat. The review, which may allow Trump to put his mark on the nuclear inventory for decades to come, could lead to more than $1 trillion in spending over nearly 30 years. There have been three such reviews since the end of the Cold War, the most recent in 2010 under President Barack Obama.

USA: Kushner’s Financial Ties to Israel Deepen Even With Mideast Diplomatic Role

in AMERICAS/POLITICS by

Last May, Jared Kushner accompanied President Trump, his father-in-law, on the pair’s first diplomatic trip to Israel, part of Mr. Kushner’s White House assignment to achieve peace in the Middle East. Shortly before, his family real estate company received a roughly $30 million investment from Menora Mivtachim, an insurer that is one of Israel’s largest financial institutions, according to a Menora executive. The deal, which was not made public, pumped significant new equity into 10 Maryland apartment complexes controlled by Mr. Kushner’s firm. While Mr. Kushner has sold parts of his business since taking a White House job last year, he still has stakes in most of the family empire — including the apartment buildings in and around Baltimore.

Ukraine: ORDLO militants put obstacles to OSCE’s monitors

in DEFENCE/EUROPE/TECHNOLOGY by

Illegal armed groups in separate areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions (ORDLO) continue limiting freedom of movement of monitors of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) and jeopardize their work, Ukraine’s representatives of the Joint Control and Coordination Center (JCCC) have reported.
“Since early 2018, the OSCE SMM continues to register cases of threats, limitations of access to military facilities and freedom of movement of its patrols on the territory temporarily uncontrolled by the government of Ukraine”, the press center of the ATO headquarters said on its Facebook page on Sunday morning. “At the same time, populists from ORDLO simulate teeming activity, having issued the second “order” in the past six months banning the unjustified limitation of freedom of movement of OSCE monitors. After issuing the first “order” late August 2017, the number of these restrictions not only did not decrease but even increased. For example, during the first month when “the order” was in effect the OSCE CMM recorded 46 cases of these violations”, the headquarters said.
