The government said that the state of emergency will be extended again.. Deputy Prime Minister and government spokesman Bekir Bozdag said: “The state of emergency will be extended once more”. He did not specify a duration, but past extensions have been done for three months. To get the parliament approval for the state of emergency the government must see serious indications of widespread violence that could interfere with Turkey’s democratic environment or its citizens’ basic rights and freedoms as set by the constitution. Turkey declared the state of emergency for the first time on July 20, after a deadly coup attempt by FETO. During the last year, Turkey police had arrested thousands of people suspected of involvement in the coup.

in AFRICA/ECONOMY/POLITICS by

Germany: Bavaria and Hungary about refugees and migration

in EUROPE/POLITICS by

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has used his controversial visit to the CSU National Group for a drastic description of the refugee crisis. This had become a “democracy problem” for Europe, said Orbán in front of journalists.
While CSU leader Horst Seehofer emphasized the rule of law Orbán, SPD, Greens and left criticized the visit.
Orban repeated a statement from 2015, when he described himself as the “border patrol captain” of Bavaria. “Consider me still as her border patrol captain.”
The migration issue has now become fundamental for Europe” Orban said. The European people clearly do not want to live under terrorism. The people want security and the borders to be protected.
He therefore thinks that the year 2018 will be “the year of the restoration of popular will in Europe”.
“Bavaria and Hungary have long combined respect and friendship,” added Horst Seehofer afterwards. The state of Bavaria will launch an initiative to strengthen the Central European states. “And Hungary will be part of it.”

France: Macron, Erdogan and the same strategic interests on Syria

in DEFENCE/EUROPE/POLITICS by

More and more diplomatically isolated, the Turkish president must reconnect with the countries of the European Union. He wants to be an indispensable partner of the Twenty-eight on the issue of migration and regional crises. “We want to increase the number of our friends and reduce that of our enemies,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently. “On regional issues and in the bilateral field, the steps we have taken with Emmanuel Macron are going in the right direction” added Erdogan.
While the personalities of the two leaders are opposed in many ways, there are also common strategic interests and convergences on many regional issues, starting with Syria. Erdogan believes, like French diplomacy, that Bashar Al-Assad can not ultimately embody the future of his country.
The two men will also discuss the situation in the Gulf and Libya, and the instability created by the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. “Turkey remains a strategic partner in many ways: in terms of migration, fight against terrorism, resolution of regional crises,” said Thursday the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian, stressing that this dialogue “demanding and constructive “must be” based on Turkey’s own human rights commitments “.

France: Emmanuel Macron meets Erdogan at the Elysee

in EUROPE/POLITICS by

Despite criticism, Emmanuel Macron on Friday received Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Paris. The opposition relies in particular on the head of state to reaffirm France’s refusal of Turkey’s entry into the European Union.
Emmanuel Macron has never hidden his plans: he wants to “talk to everyone”. Received at the Elysee, it is for the Turkish president his first major visit to the European Union since the failed coup d’ètat of July 2016. The violent repression provoked by the leader following this attempt continues with human rights violations. Nevertheless, the Elysee considers it important to “maintain the dialogue” without “hiding the differences”.
Not surprisingly, the announcement of the arrival of Erdoğan in France has made noise throughout the political class. Much of the left was even surprised by such a visit. “France must speak with everyone but welcome with red carpet Erdogan is a political mistake.”said Rachid Temal, the national coordinator of the Socialist Party.
The question of Turkey’s entry into the European Union is also closely followed by the right. They expect Macron to affirm that “the red line that we set is that there is absolutely no question of Turkey’s entry into the European Union. We are waiting for the President of the Republic to say things clearly” declared Vice President of Republicans Damien Abad.
Emmanuel Macron seems still far from giving such a sign in this sense. Although he claims to want to “avoid ruptures” between the European Union and Turkey, calling it “essential partner”, the Head of State has always been hostile to the country’s entry into the Union.

Egypt: the Zohr Field’s potential in the energy sector of Egypt

in AFRICA/ENERGY by

On 16 December the largest offshore natural gas field in the Mediterranean, the Zohr Field, that covers an area of 100 square kilometres, started production. It could bring Egypt to the goal of self-sufficiency in energy sector by 2018 and to the export of gas by 2019. According to the British Petroleum Statistical Review the Egyptian gas consumption amounts to nearly 5 billion cubic feet per day and its total daily production is almost 4 billion cubic feet but Egypt planned to stop importing the fuel by the end of next year.  Petroleum Minister Tarek Al-Molla declared that The Zohr Field, together with the other two fields of North Alexandria and Nooros will rise the gas production by 50 per cent this year and 100 per cent by 2020. The Italian Eni in 2018 will invest into Egypt $3.5 billion, that corresponds to half the company’s annual investments. Recently the country has adopted several economic reforms in order to attract foreign investments, including  floating the currency and cutting subsidies. In addition the gas pricing formula is flexible instead of fixed as it was in the past. According to the law 196 the private sector can transport, store, market and trade natural gas using the country’s pipeline network, moving away from state monopolies.
