Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs in Skopje for historic visit

in EUROPE by

VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski met on Friday with Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Kotzias. Mickoski emphasized that his party supports developing good neighborly relations, based on sincere friendship and mutual respect. Mickoski pointed out that the Republic of Macedonia must continue its Euro-Atlantic agenda and the process should be unblocked. It will also contribute to the integration and stabilization of the region through enhanced cooperation within the framework of the global structures that Macedonia naturally belongs to.

During the meeting, VMRO-DPMNE’s leader expressed concern about certain steps in the Greek society that irritate and incite negative feeling towards Macedonia, and they are not helpful to the overall process: he also stressed that the solution negotiated by the Zaev’s government should respect state and national interests.

Wrong blood type threatens soldier’s life

in DEFENCE by

The Special Inspector General For Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) in its recent report has said that many
wounded Afghan National Army (ANA) personnel lose their lives due to wrong blood type injections. According to
the report, thousands of ANA personnel have been recruited without their blood being tested or their blood type
have been typed wrongly. The report said that an advisor assisting ANA personnel at Afghan National Army
Recruiting Command told that he was aware that ANA soldiers have been killed from receiving the wrong type of
blood.
Defense Ministry spokesman DawlatWaziri said that he completely rejects this, because it is impossible to send
soldiers to their departments without determining their blood type. The report highlights that in 2017, between
January and July, at least 15,400 new personnel recruited in the ANA did not have their blood tested. The report
says the Afghan National Army Recruiting Command (ANAREC) relied on the results the new soldiers and personnel
brought from the local doctors without knowing whether the physician actually had tested the blood or no. During
the course of the review, SIGAR received information that physicians may be stamping medical forms without
collecting and testing blood samples.

Japan crude steel output drops year-on-year, the new Asian measures

in FAR EAST by

The government and industries in Japan have raised a sense of caution over measures invoked by the United States on Friday to restrict steel and aluminum imports. Although many experts say the direct repercussions on Japanese companies will be limited, some say this could be a blow to Japanese steelmakers, among others, if products that they become unable to export to the United States wind up flooding the market, driving prices down dramatically. Many Japanese car makers have factories in the United States. If additional tariffs are imposed on steel or aluminum when they procure these materials from abroad, there is a possibility that it will lead to an increase in production costs. However, the measures are applied to a wide range of countries.

Toyota Motor Corp. said that effects would be limited as 90 percent of its materials, including those for car bodies, are locally purchased. Only seven steel exporters, including Canada and the European Union, are exempted from the  tariffs. The government intends to continuously ask the United States to exempt Japanese products from the measures. The procedure for exemptions from the measures by product has begun in the United States, and Japan’s public and private sectors continue to seek exemptions.

Taylor Force Act signed into law as part of massive spending bill

in MIDLE EAST by

The PLO has criticized Congress for the approval of the Taylor Force Act, a law that threatens to freeze State Department funds from the Palestinian Authority, unless it ceases to compensate terrorists and families of terrorists convicted in the courts Israeli. However, the law makes it possible to keep aid for the AP assigned to security cooperation and some humanitarian aid.

The PLO envoy to Washington, Husam Zomlot, argued that the US move is motivated by political interests and seriously harms the prospects for peace in the Middle East. According to Zomlot, the bill punishes the Palestinian Authority, which is the only agency committed to peace and nonviolence, and undermines the American-Palestinian bilateral relationship.

PKK reportedly exits from Sinjar in Iraq

in MIDLE EAST by

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) said on Friday it would pull out its fighters from northwestern Iraq after Ankara has warned on several occasions it could launch an attack on the Yazidi-majority area. The KCK, considered the PKK’s political branch, said fighters who were deployed in Iraq’s Sinjar region to protect the Kurdish-speaking Yazidis from the brutality of ISIS would be withdrawn. “The conditions that were imposed by the August 3, 2014 events (the attack of ISIS) have gone,” it said. “With their goal achieved,” the KCK “are withdrawing from Sinjar,” it added.

U.S. charges, sanctions Iranians for global cyber attacks on behalf of Tehran

in USA by

WASHINGTON – The United States on Friday charged and sanctioned nine Iranians and an Iranian company for attempting to hack into hundreds of universities worldwide, dozens of companies and parts of the U.S. government, including its main energy regulator, on behalf of Tehran’s government. The cyber attacks, beginning in at least 2013, pilfered more than 31 terabytes of academic data and intellectual property from 144 U.S. universities and 176 universities in 21 other countries, the U.S. Department of Justice said, describing the campaign as one of the largest state-sponsored hacks ever prosecuted. The U.S. Treasury Department said that it was placing sanctions on the nine people and the Mabna Institute, a company U.S. prosecutors characterized as designed to help Iranian research organizations steal information.

U.S, Turkey in talks over patriot missiles

in POLITICS/turkey by

Turkey and the United States are in talks over the procurement of the Patriot missile system, and a senior U.S. official is expected to pay a visit to Ankara on March 31 to discuss the issue. Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said that Turkey will continue talks on Patriot missiles and other systems compatible with NATO, adding that Ankara looks positively towards all kinds of joint work that will guarantee the security of the southern borders of the country. He said that the U.S. is still an ally despite the situation in Syria. Yıldırım said that this would not be an “alternative” to the Russian S-400 anti-missile defense systems, that are “independent” systems. Turkey continues to hold talks with the Franco-Italian Eurosam consortium and the U.S. to buy missile defense systems. In fact, the system that Turkey is buying from Russia cannot be integrated into NATO systems. Foreign Ministry undersecretary Ümit Yalçın is set to visit Washington soon, “possibly next week,” as part of working groups established between Turkey and the U.S., said Aksoy.

EU against Turkey’s policy in Mediterranean

in POLITICS by

The statement by the 28 European Union member states meeting in Brussels strongly condemned Turkey’s “illegal actions” toward Greece and Cyprus in a blistering denunciation. This comes after Turkey’s arrest of two Greek soldiers, and its promise to prevent the internationally-recognized Greek Cypriot government from exploring for oil and gas. EU calls on Turkey to respect the sovereign rights of Cyprus and to normalize relations with Cyprus. A standoff over exploiting energy resources in the region risks further complicating stalled efforts to reunify Cyprus after U.N.-backed talks collapsed last year. In recent weeks Turkish warships blocked an Italian drillship from exploring for gas in the east Mediterranean island’s waters. The leaders also expressed grave concern over the continued detention of EU citizens in Turkey, including two Greek soldiers and called for these issues to be resolved through dialogue with the EU member states. The Greek soldiers were arrested on March 2 for entering a military zone in the northern Turkish province of Edirne and are waiting for their case to be heard. The summit’s denunciation will hang over an EU-Turkey summit in the Bulgaria, aimed at improving strained ties because the EU sees Turkey as a strategic partner in the fight against terrorism.
