Cairo facing calls to increase Sinai military presence

in AFRICA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Following the recent killing of 18 soldiers in North Sinai by Islamic State (ISIS) fighters, Cairo is facing rising calls to deploy more military forces against the group. They come despite legal restrictions limiting the number and type of forces that Egypt can maintain on the restive Sinai Peninsula as part of the 1979 peace treaty with Israel.“True, the army has managed to reduce the capabilities of the Sinai terrorists… but Egypt needs to walk a long way until it declares the peninsula totally free of the terrorists”, said Samir Badawi, a retired army general. “This makes it necessary for the army to deploy heavy military equipment and more troops into Sinai, something currently prohibited by the security arrangements included in the peace treaty”.

Russia’s military fired seven cruise missiles Thursday at Islamic State targets in the eastern Syrian province of Deir el-Zour. Journalists on a trip organized by the Russian Defense Ministry watched from the deck of Russia’s Admiral Essen frigate as two submarines launched seven missiles from the Mediterranean Sea. Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told reporters later that intelligence showed the missiles hit the targets southeast of Deir el-Zour, destroying a command center, a communications hub, an ammunition depot and an unspecified number of IS fighters.

The Islamic State is on the run in Iraq, but some major battles remain

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Iraqi security forces have freed most of northern Iraq from the grip of the Islamic State. But U.S. and Iraqi officials warn that thousands of militants remain in the country and are ready to wage a ferocious fight in a desert region bordering Syria. The bulk of the war against the Islamic State was finished when Iraqi security forces reclaimed the cities of Mosul and Tal Afar this summer. But the battle looming in western Anbar province is expected to be one of the most complex to date. The vast region will be difficult to surround, and clearing it will probably involve coordination among the U.S.-backed forces and the Syrian regime, Russia and Iran. U.S. officials also believe that the Islamic State’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is hiding there. Iraqi forces retook Tal Afar in just eight days, but officials say that was an anomaly and not a new rule. Shiite militias encircled the city for eight months while U.S.-led airstrikes pounded weapons facilities and targeted groups of fighters and their commanders before the ground operation began late last month.

The land convoy is the first since Syrian government forces and allied militiamen breached a nearly three-year-old siege by the Islamic State group on government-held parts of the city on Tuesday. The convoy reached a garrison on the southwestern edge of the city Thursday, carrying thousands of food baskets, fruits and vegetables, medicine, school books and stationary.

Iraqi army highlights importance of civilian security ahead of Hawija operation

in MIDLE EAST/REGIONS by

The evacuation of civilians will be a priority as plans to liberate the Hawija district in western Kirkuk from the Islamic State (IS) are underway, the Iraqi army said on Sunday. The Iraqi Defense Ministry released a statement on Saturday indicating that troops were redeployed in Kirkuk in preparation to recapture Hawija. Brigadier-General Yahya Rasul, a spokesperson for the Iraqi Army Joint Operations Command (JOC), said the safety of civilians in the district was important. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over the militant group in Tal Afar, west of Mosul, on Sep. 1 just two weeks after the campaign began. Brigadier-General Rasul said the offensive to liberate Hawija would “be fundamentally different than that for Tal Afar”.
