Iraqi forces advance in Hawija as UN says over 70,000 civilians trapped by IS

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Military officials say Iraqi forces captured an air base from the Islamic State (IS) near the city of Hawija on Monday, as the UN announced that up to 78,000 people could be trapped in the town. The US-backed Iraqi troops, supported by the Shia Hashd al-Shaabi militia and the Kurdish Peshmerga Forces, retook the strategic position as they continue to progress on the IS-held town. However, Iraqi security officials say the militants prevent some residents from leaving, while others are afraid of escaping toward government forces because of the explosives that might have been laid by the extremist group around the city. The Hawija operation was launched on Sep. 21 to dislodge the jihadist group from its last stronghold in northern Iraq, west of the oil-rich city of Kirkuk.

ISIS torches oil wells to slow advance of Iraqi forces near Hawija

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Islamic State (ISIS) militants set fire to three oil wells near Hawija, west of Kirkuk, to slow down the advance of Iraqi forces, military and oil officials said. Iraqi security forces were using bulldozers to control the fires caused by the militants on Saturday (September 30) to slow down the advance of the Iraqi forces and Hashid al-Shaabi (Shia paramilitaries) towards Hawija, military officials said on Monday (October 2). “Terrorists are trying to use the rising smoke to avert air strikes while retreating from the area toward Hawija”, army Colonel Mohammed al-Jabouri said. Military officials said the fire of one of the wells had been controlled while the other two were still burning. The fires would take about three days to be put out, according to the officials.

ISIS appeal remains, challenge for Kosovo, report warns

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

A new report, “The Islamic State Narrative in Kosovo Deconstructed One Story at a Time”, by the Kosovar
Center for Security Studies, KCSS, says Kosovo has much to do if it is to counter Islamic State’s appeal to Kosovo
citizens. Islamic State will remain a challenge for Kosovo until its institutions mount a comprehensive,
multifaceted campaign to combat its message and ‘narrative’. KCSS says blanket claims, ignorance and lack of
critical thinking are among the determining factors that have made the ISIS narrative appealing to Kosovo’s

Battle For Is Capital Reaches ‘Final Stages’ LINK:

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

The battle for the Islamic State group’s de-facto Syria capital, Raqqa, has reached its “final stages”, the U.S.-backed force leading the assault said Wednesday. The Syrian Democratic Forces captured Raqqa’s last grain silos from the militants in a surprise offensive on the city’s northern neighborhoods, mounted five days ago, the group said in a statement. Just 300 to 400 militants remain in Raqqa, according to the Observatory. The SDF control 90 percent of the north Syrian city. In the meantime, the government and its backers, and the SDF and the U.S., are at risk of clashing in the energy-rich eastern Syrian Deir el-Zour province, where both sides are rushing to grab territory from the embattled IS group. The fighting there is largely concentrated around the provincial capital, also called Deir el-Zour, which lies 125 kilometers (78 miles) southeast of Raqqa, on the banks of the Euphrates River.

Iraqi forces launch offensive against IS in Anbar

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Iraqi forces on Tuesday began an operation to recapture the Islamic State’s (IS) last remaining stronghold in Anbar Province near the border with Syria, a military source said. According to the source, Iraqi soldiers, Anbar provincial police, and Iranian-backed Shia militia Hashd al-Shaabi began advancing on the town of Anah in the morning. Their progress was slowed down by booby-traps and mines planted by IS militants, the source told the BBC. Anah, located 90 kilometers (55 miles) from the border with Syria, is one of three Iraqi towns in the Euphrates river valley still under the control of the extremist group. The military source said Iraqi troops in Anah and the surrounding areas were being supported by the US-led coalition’s air strikes as well as military advisors on the ground. The US-led Operation Inherent Resolve campaign against IS’ spokesperson confirmed the information on Twitter on Tuesday.
