On Mideast visit, US house speaker vows to confront Iran

in AMERICAS/POLITICS by

U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan came to the United Arab Emirates on Thursday promising to take a harder line on Iran’s ballistic missile program and its regional proxies, and saying he was open to imposing new economic sanctions. His Emirati hosts couldn’t have been happier. “We could have given that exact same speech”, Emirati Ambassador to the U.S. Yousef al-Otaiba said. Gulf Arab nations, which view Iran as a regional menace and opposed the 2015 nuclear deal, have welcomed the hard line adopted by the Trump administration and the Republican-controlled Congress. But there are differences lingering beneath the smiles and handshakes, including over Washington’s alliance with Qatar, which is being boycotted by the UAE and three other Arab nations.

Taliban want Farah as a base

in DEFENCE/MIDLE EAST by

The governor for the western province of Farah warned that Taliban wants to change Farah into its base. Farah residents are worrying  because the militants have intensified attacks in several districts, but the governor downplays it. “Taliban cannot dare attack the security forces in daylight, but they wage attacks on them with sophisticated weapons overnight”, Mohammad Aref Shahjahan said Tuesday. He emphasized that the insurgent group wants to establish its base by intensifying attack, but said the government forces have control on the province. “This is why Taliban is destabilizing Farah in order to create a corridor to the south-west region. Their plan has attracted attention of their supporters”. The provincial council had earlier warned against the fall of the province if the government did not prevent Taliban’s attacks. According to some military, Farah is instable because of Iran border and drugs trade. Representatives of Farah in the parliament, accuse the government of hiding realities about the security situation. “Situation is not good in Farah, Taliban has its own custom office and receives taxes from trucks”, said Samiullah Samim, a lawmaker from Farah.

Trade between Afghanistan and Pakistan drops

in ECONOMY/MIDLE EAST by

Bilateral trade between Afghanistan and Pakistan has dropped by almost 2 billion US dollars.
Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) President Zahidullah Shinwari said the trade volume between the two countries was $2.5 billion as he blamed the strained relations between Kabul and Islamabad behind the reducing trade volume between the two countries. Tensions between Kabul and Islamabad remains because the two countries blame each other of no fight against terrorist group. Furthermore, the Afghan government is searching for alternative routes to gain access to international markets to boost trade as the key Chabahar Port in Iran started operations during the recent months besides Kabul and New Delhi have launched the air corridor to help Afghan traders gain access to international markets.

Iran and Saudi Arabia: an endless rivalry

in DEFENCE/MIDLE EAST/POLITICS by

The regional rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia is consumed not only indirectly by supporting opposite sides on the battlefields throughout the most critical areas in the middles Est. Indeed, public declarations perfectly show the rivalry between these two key actors. After the Saudis condemnation for supporting Houthi rebels and terrorist groups, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused Saudi Kingdom of betraying Muslim world due to the political alignment with the United States and Israel.  The Iranian leader made the remark at a conference held in Tehran on Tuesday, attended by parliamentary representatives from Islamic countries. Khamenei also accused Saudi Arabia of helping the United States and the “Zionists”. This political support has to be marked as a betrayal of the Islamic Ummah and the Muslim World, as he added bitterly. Furthermore, Khamenei affirmed that Iran is ready to help “and act brotherly even with those among the Muslim who were once openly hostile to Iran”. He cried for the unity among Islam Ummah, which must create a great power within the world. Conflicts and wars among Muslim countries must be stopped while political leaders throughout the Middle East “should not allow that a safe haven could be created for the Zionist regime”.

Iran prepared a strong response in case of US withdrawal from JCPOA

in MIDLE EAST/POLITICS/TECHNOLOGY by

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, spokesman for the Iranian Administration Mohammad Baqer Nobakht declared that the Islamic Republic is poised to give “a strong and firm response” to a possible move by the US government to leave the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), stressing that the country has made various preparations for the possible withdrawal of the US from it. The remarks came as US President Donald Trump must decide whether to waive nuclear sanctions on Iran or effectively end the United States’ participation in the nuclear agreement. In October, Trump announced he would not certify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear agreement negotiated under the previous administration because it was “in violation of the spirit” of the accord. The Trump administration asked Congress then to come up with and pass a companion agreement that addresses those issues and to modify the legislation that gives lawmakers the authority to slap sanctions on Iran if it decides Tehran is in violation of the nuclear agreement, outlining “trigger points” instead that set off automatic sanctions. Last week, Rex Tillerson, US Secretary of State, said that Trump would be inclined to authorize another sanctions waiver if real progress was being made toward the changes he demanded in October.

Iran: major General Baqeri says that most cases of the deaths in the riots are suspicious

in DEFENCE/MIDLE EAST by

Speaking to reporters in Tehran on Wednesday, Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, denounced US allegations against Iran over deaths in the recent riots, saying that the US are themselves a symbol of oppression of people, having a long record of barbarism and crimes against humanity, and have no right to accuse a nation whose officials are elected by the people. He stressed that in the riots over the past weeks, none of the security forces carried combat weapons to deal with the demonstrators. Major General Baqeri also warned of enemy plots to blame the government for the deaths in recent riots, most of which, he said, occurred in suspicious circumstances: most cases of the deaths in the riots are suspicious because those killed have been shot from behind and the shootings have taken place in unknown areas. Security forces say many rioters arrested in the recent unrest have been trained by the MKO terrorists or had links with the Takfiri terrorist groups.

Iran: triple Party Involved in Recent Unrest in Iran

in DEFENCE/MIDLE EAST/POLITICS by

TEHRAN – On Tuesday, in a gathering of people of Qom held in Tehran, leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said that a tripartite plot was behind the recent violent unrest in some Iranian cities: the US and Israel as one side of the triangle that masterminded the plot and worked on it for months. On the second side of the tripartite plot stood a Persian Gulf wealthy state which financed the ploy, while the third party included lackeys of the terrorist Mojahedin-e-Khalq Organization (MKO) that had been prepared since months ago. Ayatollah Khamenei also pointed to two command bases the enemies had set up in the vicinity of Iran to coordinate and control the operation: one of the bases was tasked with handling the operation in the cyberspace, while the second one focused on directing the unrest. “The US is clearly pursuing the objective of overthrowing the Islamic Republic”, the Leader warned, saying unlike the previous US administrations, the current one has announced such a policy in an unabashed and overt manner. Imam Khamenei then praised the Iranian nation for protecting the country and standing against hostile plots like a “strong dam”, citing the massive rallies held across Iran in condemnation of the riots and acts of vandalism and desecration. The Leader finally called on Iranian officials and political activists to try to solve the problems, saying correction of deficiencies would thwart the foreign propaganda campaign and prevent the US from harming the country. He also stressed that a distinction should be made between legitimate demands of the people and acts of vandalism by a certain group.

Iran Condemns Deadly Terror Attack in Kabul

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

In a statement on Thursday evening, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi offered condolences to the Afghan government, nation and families of victims of suicide terrorist attack targeting the cultural center of Tebyan in Afghanistan’s capital of Kabul. He strongly condemned the attack and stressed the fact that attacking the cultural and media centers or the intellectuals that discredit extremist and violent ideologies revealed the depth of aversion that masterminds and perpetrators of terrorist activities have to freedom of speech, knowledge, wisdom and unity in Afghanistan. Qassemi also added that the Afghan government and nation’s vigilance, unity among all groups and ethnicities, and regional cooperation are key to tackling the problems and hostile acts by terrorists. The Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the suicide attack in which at least 41 people died and dozens of others were injured in the bombing at Tebyan center in Pule Sokhtia area of Kabul. Officials believe that that more than one assailant, maybe three suicide bombers, have carried out the attack that also involved the use of grenades.

UNSC Meeting Shows US Isolation on JCPOA

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

The Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations said that the meeting of the Security Council – the 15-member council meeting to review regular report on the Resolution 2231 related to the nuclear agreement – stressed once again the international community’s full support for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and confirmed the importance of its full implementation. The meeting also showed a demonstration of the United States isolation regarding the JCPOA. During the meeting the Permanent Representative of the United States made invented allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran, coming against the backdrop of US hegemonic intentions in the Middle East region and its expansionist policies. The destructive interventions of the United States in region and the exporting of billions of dollars of sophisticated weaponry, some of which ended up in the hands of Daesh terrorist fighters, are indeed the actual causes of instability. Despite the US assured to “make best efforts in good faith to sustain this JCPOA and to prevent interference with the realization of full benefits by of Iran of the sanctions lifting”, the statements of US Representative regarding to the JCPOA are inconsistent with this commitment. The international community should not allow the United States to continue to undermine the JCPOA.

Iran’s Zarif: US Seeking to Cover Up Complicity in War Crimes in Yemen

in MIDLE EAST/POLITICS/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

In a post on his official Twitter account, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif highlighted Washington’s complicity in war crimes committed in Yemen against Yemeni people, saying that since the beginning of the war, “the US has sold weapons enabling its allies to kill civilians and impose famine”. Zarif made the remarks in response to US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, who claimed that the Islamic Republic has supplied Yemen with ballistic missiles. In fact, on Thursday, during her press conference, Haley appeared standing before parts of a ballistic missile that she claimed Iran delivered to Houthis in Yemen, who then fired it at the Riyadh airport in Saudi Arabia last month. Also Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Gholam Ali Khoshroo in a statement issued on Thursday rejected Haley’s claim as “baseless” and said the accusations are aimed at covering up the Saudi war crimes in Yemen with the US complicity. Yemen’s defenseless people have been under massive attacks by coalition led by the Saud regime attacked for nearly three years, but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far. Over 14,000 Yemenis, including thousands of women and children, have lost their lives in the deadly military campaign.
