Bomb blast leaves four civilians killed, injured in southern Baghdad

A civilian was killed, while three others were wounded in a bomb blast in southern Baghdad, a security source said. “A bomb, placed near a market in Hor Rajab region, in Dora neighborhood, south of Baghdad, exploded on Friday, leaving a civilian killed and three others wounded”, the source told Alghad Press on Friday. “Police troops cordoned off the accident spot. Ambulances transferred the injured to hospital, while the victim was taken to forensic medicine department”, the source added. Violence in the country has surged further with the emergence of Islamic State Sunni extremist militants who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

Iran, Russia, Turkey Agree on Idlib De-Esclation Zone

Iran, Russia and Turkey have agreed the borders of a “de-escalation zone” in Syria’s northern Idlib province, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Friday. It said representatives from the three countries, who met in Astana, were still discussing what forces to deploy in Idlib, which is under the control of a Takfiri alliance spearheaded by the former al-Qaeda offshoot Nusra Front. “Delegations from Turkey, Russia and Iran determined the borders of a fourth de-escalation zone that will be established in Idlib province in talks yesterday and today”, Anadolu said, citing sources attending the meetings in Astana, Reuters reported. Anadolu gave no further details. Turkey’s pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper said in an unsourced report on Friday that the three countries planned to divide the Idlib region in three, with Turkish forces and the so-called Free Syrian Army fighters in the northwest part bordering Turkey.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif described as substantial and positive his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying they discussed Tehran-Moscow ties, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and regional issues, including Syria. The top Iranian diplomat met with Putin in Russia’s southwestern city of Sochi on Wednesday evening, during his ten-hour trip to Russia. Speaking to reporters afterward, Zarif described the gathering, also attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, as “substantial and positive”. One of the main topics discussed in the meeting was the crisis in Syria, Zarif noted, saying Iran and Russia work in close cooperation in the fight against terrorism. He then added that Iran, Russia and Turkey would keep working on ways to settle the crisis in Syria by launching the next round of peace negotiations in the Kazakh city of Astana.

A US warship was shooed away from Iran’s territorial waters after it received a tough warning from an Iranian navy vessel. The incident happened when an Iranian fishing boat named Shams demanded Navy’s help after an engine malfunctioning in waters 45miles off the coast of Iran’s Jask port. The Iranian Navy sent its missile-launching warship, Falakhan, for help and the fishing boat was towed to the pier to prevent further damage and drowning. A US warship with the body number 02 was approaching the fishing boat but it was shooed away after receiving a warning from the Iranian warship. The incident happened a few months after a commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Navy blasted the recent change of course by a US warship towards the IRGC vessels in the Persian Gulf, and warned of the dire repercussions of such “unprofessional” actions by Americans.

The US is trying to poison the business environment and discourage big banks and companies from working with Iran, Iranian vice president said. ‘The US is fear mongering. If the US turns those words into real action, we will then have to face a very different situation’, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi said in an exclusive interview with German Der Spiegel magazine released on Friday. ‘We are continuously assessing if this agreement benefits us, or if the price is too high to stay in the deal. If the United States pulls out of the agreement, but the rest of the countries stay committed – namely Britain, France, Germany, China, and Russia – then Iran would most probably stick with the commitments to the agreement without the US but if the US leaves the treaty and Europe follows, then this deal will certainly collapse and Iran will go back to what it was before and, technically speaking, to a much higher level. As a person who has taken part in these negotiations, I wouldn’t like to see that happen’, he stressed.

Describing the culture of peace as the essence of the UN Charter, Khoshroo bemoaned the fact that unilateralism and force in the international relations have resulted in instability, insecurity and spread of terrorism and extremism in the world.

Iran under ‘most robust’ nuclear inspection: IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has defended the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the P5+1 group of countries, saying the Islamic Republic is under “the world’s most robust” nuclear inspection regime. IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano made the remarks at a panel discussion on global nuclear governance in the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia earlier this week amid Washington’s pressure on the agency to request access to Iran’s military sites.The IAEA “is now verifying and monitoring Iran’s implementation of its nuclear-related commitments under that agreement, acting as the eyes and ears of the international community”, the UN nuclear chief said. Under the deal, Amano said, Iran has accepted restrictions on its nuclear program and the IAEA has expanded access to its sites and information.

Adel Al-Jubeir, Saudi Foreign Minister, said that Iran’s talk of a rapprochement with Saudi Arabia was laughable. He told that Iran would first have to change its policies before any diplomatic thaw could happen in order to respect international law. Al-Jubeir added “At this time, we do not see… that they’re serious about wanting to be a good neighbor”. He said that diplomatic exchanges with Iran over arrangements for the Hajj did not represent a normalization of relations and that such contacts had nothing to do with politics. Sara Bazoobandi, a senior lecturer on international political economy at Regent’s University London, is quite pessimistic and don’t think there is going to be a change whitout an immediate interest. Al-Jubeir also said that should the rift between Qatar and the Anti-Terror Quartet — Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Bahrain — continue for two years, then “so be it”. Others agreed that the diplomatic rift over Doha’s alleged support of terror groups could be a protracted dispute. Khalid Al-Hail, spokesman of the Qatari opposition, said the situation is likely to lead to regime change within the Gulf state. “The continued standoff is causing hardship within Qatar, provoking civil unrest and increasingly the likelihood that the emir will be replaced in the near future (through) a coup by members of the ruling Al-Thani family”, he told Arab News.
