OSCE MG co-chairs visit Azerbaijan’s occupied lands

Co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group (MG) have visited Azerbaijan’s occupied territories.

During the visit, OSCE MG co-chairs, Andrew Schofer (US), Stefan Visconti (France), Igor Popov (Russia) and Ambassador Andrzej Kasprzyk, personal representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, got acquainted with the situation on the contact line between the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops.Previously, the OSCE MG co-chairs visited Azerbaijan and held talks with the country’s leadership.

France has a continuous dialogue with Azerbaijan, the main economic partner in the South Caucasus. Azerbaijan wants to diversify its economy, the exchanges will make it possible to take stock of projects involving French companies, particularly in the fields of energy, transport, environment, urban development and tourism.
The ministers will also discuss relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union, regional security, as well as the settlement process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Mr Jean-Yves Le Drian will insist on the importance of implementing the decisions taken by the Armenian and Azerbaijani Presidents during their meeting in Geneva on October 16, 2017. He will assure his counterpart of France’s full commitment to the efforts of co-chairing the Minsk Group to find a negotiated and lasting solution to the conflict.

Baku-Sofia Air Service inaugurated

Prime Minister Borisov, together with his Azerbaijan’s counterpart Rasizade, inaugurated the first scheduled air service which links Baku and Sofia. The ceremony took place at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport. This direct air service will contribute to the development of business and tourism between the two countries.

Joint Statement: “Azerbaijan, Russia and Iran support the expansion of cooperation in the oil and gas sectors”

Russia, Iran and Azerbaijan want to deepen high-level cooperation on global energy market platforms and expand cooperation in the oil and gas sector, a joint statement signed by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin in Tehran. “The parties point out the key role of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran in the sustained functioning of regional and global energy markets, support the expansion of cooperation in the oil and gas as well as petrochemical sectors, including in the area of exploration and development of oil and gas fields, transport and swap deliveries of crude oil and petroleum products, as well as deepening cooperation on the international platforms”, the statement said.

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister met Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs in Palermo

Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov met with Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Angelino Alfano within the framework OSCE Mediterranean conference taking place in Palermo, October 24-25, 2017.  Ministers stressed the strategic importance of cooperation in energy field between the two countries and in this regards, referred to the Southern Gas Corridor and TANAP and TAP projects. Angelino Alfano emphasized the significance of TAP project in diversification of gas supplies and ensuring energy security of his country. Touching upon the priorities of his country during OSCE chairmanship in next year, Angelino Alfano reiterated that Italy supports the efforts towards the peaceful settlement of conflict with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs. The Italian minister stated that his country will continue to support Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the EU.

Council Of Europe warns Azerbaijan to free Mammadov

The Council of Europe has notified Azerbaijan that it will take unprecedented legal steps against Baku unless it releases imprisoned political leader Ilqar Mammadov by November 29. Mammadov, an opposition politician and rights activist who heads Azerbaijan’s Republican movement, was arrested in February 2013 and charged with helping organize riots. Western governments and rights groups have decried the charges as politically motivated. He was sentenced to seven years in prison in March 2014. The European Court of Human Rights ruled in May 2014 that his imprisonment was a violation of his rights and was intended to silence or punish him for criticizing the government. The committee on October 25 gave Baku until November 29 to either release Mammadov or it will discuss sending the case back to the rights court for a second ruling.

Mammadyarov says that the relations between Azerbaijan and Ukraine are of strategic nature.

Relations between Azerbaijan and Ukraine are of strategic nature, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister said on Tuesday. The Azerbaijani minister noted that today’s meeting expressed support for the territorial integrity of the two countries. “We also discussed the relations in transport sphere”, Mammadyarov said stressing that transport projects are very economically important.

Minister Kamaladdin Heydarov meets NATO Secretary General’s special representative

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Emergency Situations, Colonel General Kamaladdin Heydarov received a delegation led by the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, James Appathurai. Minister Heydarov outlined the importance of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and NATO. He spoke about the necessity of developing cooperation in the field of emergency civil planning and crisis management between the Ministry of Emergency Situations and NATO’s relevant bodies. Speaking about the importance of existing relations, James Appathurai, in turn, expressed his confidence that mutual visits and meetings will serve to further deepen bilateral relations.

CBA: Azerbaijani government sees no risks for manat rate

The Azerbaijani government does not see any risks for the manat rate, Elman Rustamov, chairman of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, told reporters in Baku today. “Today, Azerbaijan has a floating exchange rate of manat,” he said. “The positive trend is usually formed due to the surplus of the current account of the balance of payments. Today we expect that the current account surplus will amount to about $1.5-2 billion”. “An important question is that how much would the strengthening of manat would be in line with the economic strategy, in particular, export diversification, but so far we do not see such risks”, Rustamov said.

OSCE PA to hold discussions on Nagorno-Karabakh

The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly will hold discussions on Nagorno-Karabakh in its next sessions, the Assembly’s President, Christine Muttonen, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, told reporters today. “The Parliamentary Assembly is a platform on which problems, in particular, conflicts in the OSCE area are discussed. The OSCE has a special representative for the South Caucasus through whom the organization keeps the [Nagorno-Karabakh problem] in focus. This issue is discussed and negotiated. The resolution of the problem leads to the normalization of communication and relations among countries, and this is a positive fact”, Muttonen added.
