The attack on the Maetiga airport

in AFRICA/DEFENCE by

his morning the 33rd Infantry Brigade, a militia led by Bashir Khalfallah, called Al-Bugra, attacked the airport of Maetiga with 50 armed vehicles seeking for prisoners from the jail housed within the Maetiga compound. The area and the prisoners are currently controlled by the Special Deterrence Forces and during the three hours clashes 15 people had been killed and at least 37 injured. The Rada forces pushed back the Bugra’s militia, with the support of at least 10 other PC-aligned brigades, including the Haithem Tajouri’s Tripoli Revolutionaries Brigade. The Rada spokesman Ahmed Ben Salem said that it was impossible to count the arrested people, adding that three planes of the airport had been damaged. In an official statement the head of the Presidential Council Serraj complained the attack and declared the state of emergency around this area. In a decree the PC also announced the dissolution of the Bugra’s 33rd Infantry Brigade and the relocation of all its equipment to General Staff.

Netanyahu signed bilateral agreements with India

in MIDLE EAST/POLITICS by

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Indian premier Narendra Modi met Monday in New Delhi, in what Netanyahu hailed as the beginning of a new era of friendship between the two nations. Nine bilateral agreements have been signed, including memoranda of understanding in the gas, oil, renewable energy and information security sectors. In addition, a joint industrial research and development agreement and an update of an aviation agreement have been signed, as well as agreements on health and space exploration. According to a source from the Prime Minister’s delegation, among the issues discussed between the two leaders was greater recognition of the status of Israel as a strategic partner of India and an increase in India’s trade and investment in Israel. Beyond the diplomatic officials, Netanyahu is accompanied by 130 Israeli businessmen who represent about 100 companies in the field of information security, military, water, energy, agriculture, health and food. Members of the Israeli delegation are working to save the $ 500 million Spike anti-tank missile business.

Gaza’s infrastructure on the verge of collapse

in ENERGY/MIDLE EAST by

A new report published by the Giza organization reported that Gaza’s energy, water and sewage systems are on the verge of collapse. The 1.8 million inhabitants of the Strip are afflicted by frequent blackouts, undrinkable water and an obsolete cellular network. Israel says its blockade is essential to prevent terrorists from obtaining materials to fortify military positions, dig tunnels and build rockets to shoot at the Jewish state. The shortage of fuel has meant that the only power plant in Gaza can only operate for a few hours a day. The lack of electricity in Gaza stems from a dispute between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority on tax payments on fuels, accused Gisha; currently, the total wattage is still only about half that needed to meet the daily demand. Another problem is that of the water. According to the report, 90% of Gaza’s water is taken from an underground stratum, which is however running out much faster than expected and excessive use has damaged water quality. The United Nations has estimated that groundwater damage will become irreversible by 2020. In the report, Gisha specifies the role that the actors present in the Strip have in every crisis, including the PA of Ramallah, Hamas and Israel. Furthermore, the risk of future conflicts discourages foreign donors from starting new projects.

Iran’s Speaker stresses the need for closer economic interaction among Islamic Nations

in MIDLE EAST/POLITICS by

Addressing the 20th session of the General Committee of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) in Tehran on Monday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani held meetings with his foreign counterparts to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues. In separate meetings, Larijani had talks with the parliament speakers of Pakistan, Syria, Oman and Senegal. During his speech, Larijani highlighted the need to establish and enhance economic relations among Islamic countries for stronger Muslim unity to foil hostile plots that seek division in the Islamic world. He also stressed the need to devise mechanisms to interconnect political issues and economic activities of Muslim countries: Islamic governments could work in various fields such as the energy industry and investment. Larijani criticized Donald Trump’s offensive comments about countries like Haiti and African nations made during a recent meeting at the White House, saying such “derogatory and disparaging” remarks spell the era of “modern barbarism” when political language turns insulting.

The SPD and the exploratory compromise

in EUROPE/POLITICS by

There is no coalition agreement yet for the new Grand Coalition government. But there are 28 pages of exploratory results agreed between the Union and the SPD. But what has the SPD achieved in the soundings – and which prestige projects are missing in the results paper? Pension. The current pension level of 48 percent should be established by 2025. But this is nothing other than what the Federal Government expects even without new legislation. According to the most recent pension insurance report, the level is expected to remain at the current 48 percent by 2024 and then gradually decline until 2030, when it will reach 45 percent. SPD can claim the planned basic pension. For low-paid workers, there should be a basic pension of ten percent above the basic level if they have 35 years of contributions or periods of child-raising. Job. In the case of the full-time return issue, a “temporary part-time right” is planned. It is to apply to companies with more than 45 employees, and there are other limitations: The employer can reject a temporary part-time. Refugees. Also the refugee policy needs discussion. The suspended family reunification of refugees with limited protection should therefore only be re-admitted to a very limited extent. Humanitarian immigration per annum should not exceed the range of 180,000 to 220,000 annually.

GSG 9 is to be increased by a third

in DEFENCE/EUROPE by

The anti-terrorist unit of the Federal Police, GSG 9 (Border Guard Group 9), is to be enlarged by a third and get a second location in Berlin. That said the commander of the unit, Jerome Fuchs. Reason for the second location in the capital was the persistent terrorist threat there. “If you look at comparable terrorist situations across Europe, then it was often capital cities that were affected. It is essential that we are better prepared in the capital. Our aim is clear: GSG9 needs to be capable of quicker reactions in the capital” said Fuchs. The group is expected to be stationed in Berlin-Spandau. It was “the big challenge for the unit to get the right junior”, Fuchs said. Only police officers could apply. Rolf Tophoven, the veteran counter-terrorism expert who wrote the first book on GSG9 in 1977, said the move to Berlin was “overdue”. “It’s very important to have the strong presence of an anti-terror unit in the capital”, he told DW. “According to the German security forces, the terrorist situation has not become less dangerous, despite the military defeat of ‘Islamic State’ – on the contrary it could have become more dangerous”, he added. “The other point is that a few things are coming to a head in organized crime, and for that it is important to have a powerful unit”. The Border Guard Group 9, was founded in 1972 after the attack by Palestinian terrorists on Israeli athletes at the Olympic Games in Munich. The purpose of the special unit is the fight against the most serious and organized crime as well as terrorism.

immigration, the people ask Macron to stop it

in EUROPE/POLITICS by

Security, immigration and employment are top French priorities.
Still a little time to act but specific requirements on the content of the reforms. This is in summary the conclusion of the Kantar Sofres Onepoint survey conducted for Le Figaro, on the French expectations of the government for 2018. Before expressing a clear opinion, the French wait to see on three points in particular. It is especially on the improvement of the purchasing power that they say they are the most attentive (51%), then on the decrease of the unemployment (43%) and finally on the decrease of the taxes and charges (40%). Three closely related themes that overlap more or less with the action taken by Emmanuel Macron since his election. The French people place at the top of the list the requirement to “facilitate the entry of young people into the labor market” (86%). An issue they just put in front of “strengthening anti-terrorism laws” and “lowering taxes for individuals”. On the eve of Macron’s visit to Calais, the demand to “fight against illegal immigration” comes fourth (75%), just ahead of toughening asylum rules for refugees”.

Iran and Russia Discuss Preparations for Syrian Congress of National Dialogu

in MIDLE EAST/POLITICS by

On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov discussed about preparations for a Russian-hosted Syrian People’s Congress, a trilateral meeting on the Syrian crisis expected to be held in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in late January. The Russian official also held separate talks with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu. On November 22, 2017, the Iranian, Russian and Turkish presidents held talks on the Arab country’s crisis in Sochi: the three presidents attended a press conference and issued a joint statement. During the press conference, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that the tripartite meeting discussed holding an all-Syrian congress, which will see representatives from all sides in Sochi to exchange views on the fate of the country and pave the way for the drafting of a new constitution and elections. Also Recep Tayyib Erdogan emphasized that the three nations would help stage a meeting of Syrian groups hosted by Russia, agreeing to keep working on the peace process in Syria.

Iran Prepared a Strong Response in Case of US Withdrawal from JCPOA

in MIDLE EAST/POLITICS by

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, spokesman for the Iranian Administration Mohammad Baqer Nobakht declared that the Islamic Republic is poised to give “a strong and firm response” to a possible move by the US government to leave the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), stressing that the country has made various preparations for the possible withdrawal of the US from it. The remarks came as US President Donald Trump must decide whether to waive nuclear sanctions on Iran or effectively end the United States’ participation in the nuclear agreement. In October, Trump announced he would not certify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear agreement negotiated under the previous administration because it was “in violation of the spirit” of the accord. The Trump administration asked Congress then to come up with and pass a companion agreement that addresses those issues and to modify the legislation that gives lawmakers the authority to slap sanctions on Iran if it decides Tehran is in violation of the nuclear agreement, outlining “trigger points” instead that set off automatic sanctions. Last week, Rex Tillerson, US Secretary of State, said that Trump would be inclined to authorize another sanctions waiver if real progress was being made toward the changes he demanded in October.
