The latest revelations “re-emphasize the work the European Commission is doing to combat tax evasion”, EU Deputy Chief Executive Valdis Dombrovskis told reporters.

Carles Puigdemont: This is not just about Catalonia. This is about democracy itself

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

An article about the position of Puigdemont in which, the former catalan president, has spoken about what he thinks about the crisis in Catalonia. In this article he has shown a terrible picture of the situation. Affirming that “Catalonia is right now the only territory in the European Union that has been denied the supreme law its citizens voted for; the parliament that its citizens elected; the president that this parliament elected; and the government that this president appointed in the exercise of his powers. Acting in an arbitrary, undemocratic, and in my view, unlawful manner, the Spanish state decided to dissolve the Catalan parliament in the middle of the legislative term, to dismiss the president and the Catalan government, to intervene in our self-government and the institutions that the Catalans have been building in our nation for centuries” he has emphasized the image of the Spanish Government as an authoritarian one and the image of a central government that is persecuting the leaders of the pro independence movement.

in POLITICS/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Trump’s visit comes shortly after the 19th National Congress of the CPC, which reaffirmed a mutually beneficial, win-win opening up strategy. The 19th CPC National Congress has outlined the future of China’s diplomacy, said Jia Xiudong with the China Institute of International Studies, noting that China-U.S.ties are crucial to the new type of international relations and the community of shared future for humanity. U.S. President Donald Trump will pay a state visit to China from Wednesday to Friday, the first head of state to visit China since the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Apart from the red-carpet ceremony, formal talks and banquet, Chinese President Xi Jinping and his U.S. counterpart will have some informal get-togethers, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang said.  Chinese ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai said: “we have everything that is required for a state visit, but we want more than that”. Though the details of these informal arrangements have not been made public, Cui said that there will be “some special arrangements” for Trump and the first family to learn more about Chinese history, culture and people. During Trump’s stay, the two presidents will have sufficient time for the “top-level, strategic conversation”, which is “extremely important for the development of bilateral relations”, Cui said. Trade cooperation and the Korean Peninsula are among the key topics for Trump’s discussions in Beijing. Healthy economic and trade ties serve as the base of relations with last year 520 billion dollars for the according to China’s Ministry of Commerce and U.S. Zheng said that the solution to the trade imbalance between China and the United States is more U.S. exports to China and increased two-way investment, rather than restricting imports from China. The two presidents will discuss major issues of common concern in Beijing, Zheng said, noting that the meeting is of great significance to Sino-U.S. relations and to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. 70 North Korean workers sent home from Chinese factory

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Inside sources have reported that a group of North Korean workers employed by a factory in China’s Longjing City, Kaisantun, were given orders to return home in the middle of October. “A pharmaceutical factory (name redacted for the source’s protection) in Kaisantun that employed over 70 North Korean laborers sent them all home about 15 days ago. Although they hadn’t even been here for a year, their contracts were cancelled in the middle of their term and they returned to North Korea”, a local Chinese source reported to Daily NK on November 2. Daily NK reported in September that the Chinese authorities were pressuring factories in Dandong City to cancel their employment contracts with North Korean workers. “If the authorities are sending back North Korean workers from Kaisantun, they will likely do the same in Tumen and Hunchun”, the source added. Another local source told Daily NK that in the beginning of October, about 30 North Korean laborers were spotted shopping in the markets of Yanji. “Usually,” he said, “the laborers travel in groups of ten at the most, so seeing this many together was a first. They bought a large number of products and then weren’t seen in the markets for some time. I asked about this, and found out that they had all returned to North Korea”. Although the conditions are difficult and dangerous, working overseas has been attractive to North Korean workers wanting to send money home. But the North Korean regime’s pursuit of missile and nuclear weapons development has made this more difficult. “Many of these workers paid a bribe to get the chance to work overseas and earn money; it’s unfortunate that they won’t be able to earn as much as they hoped”, the second source concluded.

Coalition closes Yemen airports, ports temporarily

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

The Arab coalition closed off the land, sea and air ports in Yemen early Monday after a missile targeted Riyadh, hours after an ISIS-claimed militant attack in Aden killed at least 17 people. In a statement, the coalition accused Iran of supplying Houthi militias and their allies with the missile launched on Saturday toward the Saudi capital’s international airport. The coalition’s statement said the closures would be temporary and “take into account” the work of humanitarian and aid organizations. Meanwhile in Aden, masked militants claimed by an ISIS affiliate set off a large car bomb outside a security headquarters in Yemen’s southern port city early Sunday, killing at least 17 people before storming the compound, officials said. Fighting continued well into the night. Speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters, the security officials said the militants placed snipers on the roof and gunned down most of the security forces inside. The officials gave conflicting accounts of what happened next inside the building. They initially said that the militants had taken an unknown number of people hostage. Later they said that they opened cell gates and released prisoners. Security forces backed by an Apache helicopter continued to fight for control of the installation after nightfall, chasing down militants in the surrounding structures and neighborhood. Some hostages were killed, they added, without providing specific figures. They said at least five soldiers were among the dead.

Detained suspects face many charges

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Bribery, embezzlement, money laundering and abuse of power are among the charges against dozens of princes, officials and businessmen detained in an anti-corruption probe, according to sources. The Saudi Center for International Communication (CIC), an initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Information, said that sums of money that appear to be linked to corruption cases will be reimbursed to the Saudi state’s General Treasury. A no-fly list has been drawn up and security forces in some Saudi airports were barring owners of private jets from taking off without a permit, a section of the Arabic press reported on Monday. Eleven princes, four ministers and tens of former ministers were detained late on Saturday after Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman decreed the creation of an anti-corruption committee chaired by Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman. The new body has been given broad powers to investigate cases, issue arrest warrants and travel restrictions, and seize assets. The royal decree said the crackdown came in response to “exploitation by some of the weak souls who have put their own interests above the public interest, in order to, illicitly, accrue money”. On Sunday, Attorney General Sheikh Saud Al-Mojeb said in a statement, “The suspects are being granted the same rights and treatment as any other Saudi citizen. A suspect’s position or status does not influence the firm and fair application of justice”.

Saudi accuses Iran of potential ‘act of war’

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Saudi Arabia has lashed out at Iran over the firing of a ballistic missile towards Riyadh by Houthi rebels in Yemen, citing evidence that Tehran was behind the attack and labelling it a potential “act of war”. A statement issued on Monday via the state news agency SPA denounced the “flagrant military aggression by the Iranian-controlled Houthi militias” and said that an examination of the debris “confirmed the role of Iran’s regime in manufacturing [this and a previous missile] and smuggling them to the Houthi militias in Yemen for the purpose of attacking the Kingdom, its people, and vital interests”. The statement accused Iran of violating the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2216, which prohibits states from supplying weapons to Yemeni armed groups. The statement also noted that Saudi Arabia would temporarily close all Yemeni ground, air and sea ports while investigating how the missiles were smuggled in. Yemen’s national airline, Yemenia, subsequently cancelled all flights to the country. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and political leaders have rejected allegations of the country’s involvement in the strike.
