Juncker: Turkey is taking giant strides away from EU

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, in his annual keynote speech to the European Parliament on the state of the bloc, said that he saw no prospect of Turkey joining the EU “in the foreseeable future”, adding that “Turkey has been taking giant strides away from the European Union for some time”. “Accession candidates must give utmost priority to the rule of law, justice and fundamental rights. This rules out EU membership for Turkey for the foreseeable future”, he added. “Journalists belong in newsrooms not in prisons. They belong where freedom of expression reigns”, Juncker said. “Stop insulting our member states by comparing their leaders to fascists and Nazis”. Meanwhile, Juncker put a final stamp on the EU’s recently revived engagement in the Balkans, where Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Kosovo all want to join the EU one day. With Britain now scheduled to exit the EU in 2019, Juncker said he foresaw no new enlargement of the bloc before 2020.

Western Balkans in EU? Not before 2019 – Juncker

The conditions for Western Balkan countries to join the EU membership will not be met before the end of the mandate of the current European Commission (EC). EC President Jean-Claude Juncker said this on Wednesday, during his “state of the union” address at the European Parliament. Beta is reporting that Juncker “stressed the EU will have more than 27 member states in the coming years”. But, he said, “the conditions for the entry of a new member from the Western Balkans into the EU will not be fulfilled before the end of the mandate of the current European Commission” – in 2019. “And each time for each new member state, the rule of law will have to be fully established and the fundamental values ​​of the EU respected”, Junkcer pointed out, adding that this was “an absolute priority”. He made it clear that “this excludes Turkey’s entry into the EU for the time being”. So there could be a chance for Serbia to join the EU, but not before 2019.

Ankara has singled out Germany among European countries for embracing some 250 fugitive diplomats and soldiers accused of involvement in the coup with suspected links to FETÖ.

Kocani will vote on refugee and migrant camps on October 15th

On Octobeer 15th the citizens of Kocani will be called voting about the opening of refugee or migrant camps in their municipality. It is the lastest series of announced referendums on this issue. The referendum question will be : are you in favor of setting and integrating migrants on the territory of the municpality of Kocani? The local Council will consider valid this referndum if more than half of all voters voted. From 2015-2016 Macedonia bore the brunt of refugee and migrants crisis, with more than a milion of people acrossing on their way to European Union.

Brglez : Slovenia supports Macedonia for EU and NATO without any conditions

Speaker of the National Assembly of Slovenia Milan Brglez said Tuesday after meeting with his Macedonian counterpart, Talat Xhaferi. Slovenia supports and will support Macedonia in the European integration processes without any additional conditions. For small countries like Macedonia and Slovenia, it is typical to be united and together to achieve our goals before the international community. Slovenia will always support Macedonia on the path to European integration, the path to it will be easier if both countries do this together.

 

Kosovo PM dismisses State Commision on setting border with Montenegro

Prime Minister, Ramush Haradinaj, during his first meeting of his cabinet on Monday has proposed for the state Commission on demarcation be dismissed and tasked former LDK MP Shpejtim Bulliqi to form a new team and create the new Commission. The Agreement signed in 2015 by the then former minister of Foreign Affairs, Hashim Thaci and minister of Interior Skender Hyseni was refused repeatedly by MPs in previous legislation, including Haradinaj who as MP of the opposition AAK was one of the loudest MP opposing the Agreement. Ratification of the Agreement on border delineation with Montenegro is one of the last remaining criteria for Kosovo citizens get visa liberalisation with the EU.

Permanent structured Cooperation on defense could be launched by end 2017

On 7th September in Tallin the European Union ministers of defense had an informal meeting. The main subject of the meeting was how to move ahead with PESCO on defence, that could possibly start by the end of the year. Federica Mogherini stated that there’s a overall consensus on the main lines of PESCO and that there are a lot of proposal on how to launch the cooperations mechanism. Between now and the end of September, ministers will meet again with the aim to be ready by mid-October to present to the EU High Representative and the Council the basis for a common notification interest of member states. When the European institutions will receive the full list of countries interested in the project, there will be a second phase that will last three months in wich all the parts will negotiate for all the details. The High Representative of th EU Federica Mogherini expressed enthusiasm seeing the rapid progress, that testimony excellent teamwork by alla he Member State and European institutions. Mrs Mogherini pointed out that the EU had already received proposals for some 30 projects that could be developed under the PESCO mechanism.

Sugareski : €188 milion provided for improving road, rail and communal infrastructure

At today’s press conference the Minister of Infrastructure and Comunication Sugareski said that in just 100 day the Goverment provided 188.4 milion euro in grants for improving road,rail and communal infrastructure and Macedonia is becoming part of the transport comunity of Balkan countries and the EU. He pointed out that 131 milion € of grants Eu have been provided for the construction of the railiway line to Bulgaria on Corridor 8 and with the memorandum signed with the Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and Comunications, the two countries are obliged to build completely new railroad by 2027 at the least. In this month Macedonia will sign a bilateral agreement with the EU to finance the Gradsko-Drenovo expressway.

Economic Development Prevents Spread of Extremist Ideology

During the meeting of the Ministers of Foriegn Affairs of the EU was in Estonia in which the themes of the meeting were: the joint secuirty challenges, the prevention and fight against the radicalism and violent extremism in Europe. The Albanian Foreign Affairs Minister Bushati underlined how economic development and job opportunities for young people are important to prevent the spread of extremist ideology. He also informed that Albania’s maeasures and achievements in the fight against violent extremism and expressed the continued support with EU policy security challenges.

EU divided over calls to block Turkey’s bid

European Union member countries are presenting a divided picture on whether to continue full membership talks with Turkey. Strongest opposition to Merkel’s call came from Paris, as President Emmanuel Macron stated that ties with Turkey should continue despite the fact that the Turkish government has failed to meet EU democratic and human rights norms of late. Merkel’s appeal received positive response from Austrian Foreign Minister Sebestian Kurz, who has long been an advocate of suspending talks with Turkey, and from the Netherlands Foreign Minister Bert Koenders. On the other hand, Finland and Lithuania similarly spoke out against breaking off negotiations.
