Russia declares ISIL operates near U.S base in Syria

in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Russia made today a new accusation to the United States, of allowing Islamic State to operate “under its nose” in Syria, saying Washington was letting the militant group move about freely in an area abutting a U.S. military base. The allegations, made by Russia’s Defence Ministry, centre on a U.S. military base at Tanf, a strategic Syrian highway border crossing with Iraq in the south of the country. The United States says the Tanf facility is a temporary base used to train partner forces to fight against Islamic State. But Major-General Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian Defence Ministry, said Moscow wanted to know how around 300 Islamic State militants in pickup trucks had passed through the U.S.-controlled area and tried to block the highway between Damascus and Deir al-Zor used to supply Syrian forces.“We issue a warning. All responsibility for sabotaging the peace process will lay exclusively with the American side”, he added.

China and Russia urge restraint after new round of Trump tweets on North Korea

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Russia and China called for restraint on North Korea on Monday after US President Donald Trump warned over the weekend that “only one thing will work” in dealing with Pyongyang, hinting that military action was on his mind. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call: “Moscow has called and continues to call on the parties involved in the conflict and on those who have anything to do with this issue to exercise restraint and to avoid any steps that would only worsen the situation”. In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying repeated China’s position that all parties exercise restraint, describing the situation as extremely complex and serious. China hopes all sides do nothing to irritate each other or worsen the problem and speak and act cautiously, she told a daily news briefing. On Saturday, Trump made a similar comment on Twitter about how negotiations have failed for 25 years and said “only one thing will work” with North Korea. Jim Mattis on Monday told the US Army to be ready with military options on North Korea: “There is one thing the US Army can do and that is you have got to be ready to ensure that we have military options that our President can employ if needed. Mattis add: “We currently are in a diplomatically led effort and how many times have you seen the UN Security Council vote unanimously, now twice in a row, to impose stronger sanctions on North Korea”.

Turkey launches operation in Syria ‘for security’

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Turkey has announced the beginning of a new military operation into Idlib province in Syria as part of a deal with Russia and Iran, in an attempt to create de-escalation zones and also prevent Syrian Kurdish groups from building a “terror corridor” along the Syrian border toward the Mediterranean Sea. The Turkish Armed Forces on early Oct. 8 shelled positions in jihadist-controlled Idlib in support of the advance of Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters on the ground, a day after Ankara announced the start of an operation there. “The [operation] process, which began yesterday and started to be implemented today, is continuing together with the Free Syrian Army without any problems”, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said. Erdoğan underlined that the operation into Idlib, just like the Euphrates Shield Operation, is part of Ankara’s strategy to eliminate security threats at their source. “We are obliged to break this terror corridor from the east toward the Mediterranean. We cannot tolerate this. Otherwise we’ll suffer from another Kobane [incident]. We don’t want that and we won’t allow it”, Erdoğan said.
