Government confirms intervention of Russian hackers in Catalan crisis

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Since the day of the referendum there has been the suspicion that Russian hackers had interfered with the process of Catalan independence to destabilize the Country. Today Íñigo Méndez de Vigo (government spokesperson ) and María Dolores de Cospedal (Defense Minister ) have confirmed that there has been an interference of Russian and Venezuelan hackers in the crisis in Catalonia. After this statement they’ve announced that they will deal with this great problem during the next European Union Foreign Affairs Council meeting. It’s not the first time that Russia is accused to interfere with the political and social situation of other Countries through technological means. It has been the case of USA Presidential Elections and the last elections in Germany. According to the Popular Party spokesperson in Eu Parliament this would represent a way for Russia to destabilize the EU. Nevertheless according to the Defense Minister it has to be considered first that the hackers were in Russia and not that the interference has been carried out by the Russian Government.

US accuses Russia of INF treaty violations

in POLITICS/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

By accusing Russia of violating the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty (signed by both sides in 1987), the United States tries to lend legitimacy to its own steps in violation of that document, Chairman of the Russian Federation Council (upper house of parliament) Committee for Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev told reporters on Thursday. The Russian senator stressed that Washington had failed to provide evidence proving that Moscow was violating the INF Treaty. “This treaty applies only to the ground-based weapons, but as it has been reiterated many times, Russia has no need to go back to this kind of weapons since the combat capabilities of our submarines, warships and Aerospace Force allow us to totally ensure the country’s security,” he said.

According to Kosachev, the United States seeks to withdraw from the INF Treaty to continue increasing the capabilities of its Prompt Global Strike system.

Paradise Paper: Russian Businessman defraud a European Bank.

in PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Alexander Glukhovskoi, a Russian businessman is reportedly at the center of a scam which funneled millions of dollars from a taxpayer-funded European development bank to offshore shell companies, according to the Paradise Papers leak.On Sunday, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) published 13.4 million documents leaked from the Bermuda-based law firm Appleby. The so-called Paradise Papers, which follow the group’s earlier Panama Papers in 2015, detail the methods the rich and powerful use to hide their wealth offshore. Aftenposten, a media partner of ICIJ based in Norway, reported on Wednesday that the taxpayer-funded European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in 2008 handed millions of dollars of funds to one of Appleby’s clients — Imperial Mining. But the money was never used for the purpose. The company had two shareholders at the time, Aftenposten reports IM International and Americo Resources, which is co-owned by Alexander Glukhovskoi and his ex-wife, Julia Glukhovskaya. The Moscow Times was able to independently verify Glukhovskoi’s position through Imperial Mining’s website and a Florida public records search. According to Aftenposten, the nefarious nature of Imperial Mining should have been clear to the EBRD. Glukhovskoi had fled Moscow in 2005 after being charged with fraud and threats and was put on Interpol’s wanted list that same year. In 2011, he was reportedly arrested in Thailand, which was where he was last seen.

in POLITICS/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

The Syrian opposition taking part in the last round of peace talks in Astana has rejected the request for a congress for Russia in the city of Sochi in the Black Sea. The Syrian Congress on National Dialogue proposed by Moscow during the talks of two days in the Kazakh capital should discuss reconciliation between all parties in war, political reform and discussing the new Syrian constitution proposal. “It is a Russian deception,” said Fateh Hassoun, who led the Syrian opposition military delegation to the 7th round of Astana to end the six-year Syria war. “We do not trust Russians because they are part of the war and are fighting for the regime on the ground,” he added. The Russian delegation said the conference will be held on the 18th of this month and can be held both on the Russian military base of Hmeimim in Latakia and in Sochi. But Syrian opposition accused Moscow of trying to deflect and control the peace process in Syria moving seats from Geneva and Astana to a trial controlled by Hmeimim-Sochi. Syrian opposition leader Mohamad Alloush said the proposed conference would be similar to a dialogue between the regime and himself.

Saudi Arabia and Russia ‘clear fog’ before OPEC meeting

in POLITICS/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Saudi Arabia and Russia clearly stating support to extend a global deal to cut oil supply for another nine months. OPEC, plus Russia and nine other producers, have cut oil output by about 1.8 million barrels per day since January. The pact runs to March 2018 and they are considering extending it. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said this week he supported keeping the deal in place for nine months, following on from similar remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Oil prices fell on Friday after Brent rallied to just below $60 a barrel the previous session but support from the comments by the Saudi crown prince for extending OPEC-led output cuts created a floor. Oil hit $59.55 on Thursday, its highest since July 2015 and more than 30 percent above its 2017 lows touched in June. US crude prices have been capped by rising US production. Oil prices have been hovering near their highest levels for this year amid recent signs of a tightening market, talk of an extension of production cuts and tensions in Iraq. Friday’s announcement of a cease-fire between Iraqi forces and the Peshmerga from the country’s autonomous northern Kurdish region eased some concerns.

North Korea has huge plans for nuclear test, Trump irked

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

A day after U.S. President Donald Trump turned his anger due to failed efforts in subduing North Korea’s nuclear ambitions from China to Russia – Pyongyang announced its own plans.Trump, on Wednesday, said that Russia was having a negative impact on U.S. efforts to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons while China had been helpful. In a televised interview, Trump said it would be easier to resolve the North Korea nuclear issue if the United States had a better relationship with Russia. Meanwhile, North Korea, which has already tested a series of weapons this year, including the successful test of its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb so far – issued its own warning on Thursday morning. Ri Yong Pil, a senior diplomat in North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, warned that the U.S. should take the hydrogen bomb threat from Kim Jong Un seriously adding that the foreign ministry was aware of plans for a launch and urged Washington to prepare itself. He said, “The foreign minister is very well aware of the intentions of our supreme leader, so I think you should take his words literally.” Last week, amid the heated war of words being exchanged between Trump and Kim Jong Un, CIA chief Mike Pompeo said that North Korea could be only months away from gaining the ability to hit the United States with nuclear weapons. On November 3, Trump is scheduled to depart on a trip during which he will visit Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines. Meanwhile, Trump, who has pressed China to help rein in North Korea’s nuclear program so far since January, turned the heat on Russia on Wednesday. He said, “I think we could have a good relationship with Russia. I think that North Korean situation would be easier settled.”As North Korea’s sole major ally, China accounts for more than 90 percent of trade with the isolated country and on Thursday, Trump said in a tweet that he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping and the conversation included North Korea.Russian President Vladimir Putin warned last week that North Korea must not be “backed into a corner” and urged dialogue to end the nuclear standoff with the U.S.

North Korea justifies its most powerful nuclear bomb test

in ASIA/FAR EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

As South Korea and the United States began their week-long joint Navy drills in the waters around the Korean peninsula on Monday – North Korea released a statement justifying its nuclear program. A North Korean lawmaker said that was America’s antics that compelled Pyongyang to develop and successfully test what was by far its most powerful nuclear weapon yet. Addressing the 137th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in St. Petersburg, Russia, the Deputy Chairman of North Korea’s parliament An Tong Chun argued that U.S. military pressure was the primary inspiration for Pyongyang’s decision to pursue its nuclear and ballistic weapons program, despite heavy international sanctions. He said, “It was the United States who prompted the DPRK (the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) to create a hydrogen bomb and ballistic missiles. We are determined to build up our nuclear forces until peace in struggle with the United States is secured. North Korea will never discuss its right to nuclear weapons as long as the United States keeps its nuclear threat and belligerent policy towards North Korea”. Now, North Korea has claimed that it has a right to create, test and possess nuclear and ballistic weapons as a deterrent against an invasion from hostile powers such as the U.S., but the U.S. and a number of other countries, including North Korea’s closest traditional ally, China, have objected to Kim Jong Un’s actions. On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has previously protested Kim Jong Un’s moves, signed a decree affirming Moscow’s commitment to a November 2016 UN Security Council resolution that implements harsh sanctions against North Korea and individuals believed to be linked to its nuclear weapons program. Earlier this month, a Russian lawmaker who returned from a visit to Pyongyang said that North Korea is preparing to test a long-range missile which it believes can reach the west coast of the United States. According to South Korean intelligence officials and analysts, North Korea might time its next provocation to coincide with China’s all-important Communist Party Congress that begins on Wednesday. Meanwhile, on Monday, the European Union banned the sale of oil and oil products to North Korea, in a largely symbolic move aimed at encouraging countries that have more significant levels of trade with the country to follow suit.
