Afghanistan: 8 IS militants in Kabul

The national intelligence agency has arrested eight Islamic State operatives in the capital, Kabul. The arrests follow an assault by five heavily armed Islamic State suicide bombers on the Afghan military academy in Kabul that killed 11 soldiers. The suspects were recruiting Afghan youth and planning terror attacks in Kabul, the agency said. They were accumulating funds for subversive activities. Afghan security forces have since improved security around the capital and made raids against IS militant. Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, acting on findings of a probe into the assault, fired seven army officers, including two generals, for ‘professional negligence”. The situation in Kabul is criticized and Ghani’s government is accused of failing to protect the city and Afghanistan.

Taliban want Farah as a base

The governor for the western province of Farah warned that Taliban wants to change Farah into its base. Farah residents are worrying  because the militants have intensified attacks in several districts, but the governor downplays it. “Taliban cannot dare attack the security forces in daylight, but they wage attacks on them with sophisticated weapons overnight”, Mohammad Aref Shahjahan said Tuesday. He emphasized that the insurgent group wants to establish its base by intensifying attack, but said the government forces have control on the province. “This is why Taliban is destabilizing Farah in order to create a corridor to the south-west region. Their plan has attracted attention of their supporters”. The provincial council had earlier warned against the fall of the province if the government did not prevent Taliban’s attacks. According to some military, Farah is instable because of Iran border and drugs trade. Representatives of Farah in the parliament, accuse the government of hiding realities about the security situation. “Situation is not good in Farah, Taliban has its own custom office and receives taxes from trucks”, said Samiullah Samim, a lawmaker from Farah.

Afghanistan: three Taliban arrested

The security forces have arrested three key members of the Taliban in Southeastern Paktika province of Afghanistan. According to the Ministry of Interior, the militants were arrested from the Zeruk district. He also said that one vehicle, one radio handset and some amount of ammunition seized as well.
The group was the main planner and organizer of terrorist and destructive activities, armed assault and explosions in different parts of Paktika province.
The Taliban insurgents have not commented the fact yet.
