Iraq leader in Japan for talks on peace, reconstruction

Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived on Thursday in Japan to seek international support to restore peace and prosperity in his country, torn by extremism. During the opening ceremony of the expert level of the international conference on Iraqi economic development in Tokyo, both Abe and al-Abadi discussed ways to improve public safety in the Middle Eastern country. Japanese officials said the conference was aimed at helping Iraq reconstruct by establishing a system to eliminate weapons held by many civilians. The goal is to create jobs, provide vocational training and motivate people to return to their ordinary lives. Officials from 30 countries and international organizations  partecipated to the conference.

Fuad Masum says relations between Baghdad and Erbil are “normal”

Iraqi President Fuad Masum said relations between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region are now “normal,” after ties between both sides deteriorated following the Kurdish independence referendum in September 2017. During an interview with the Saudi newspaper Arab News, published on Thursday, Masum said that there is a “calm and unpublicized dialogue” between Baghdad and Erbil. “With regards to ties between Baghdad and Kurdistan, relations are normal and there is dialogue between the two sides,” he said. Baghdad and Erbil need each other, the Iraqi president added, and that neither side will give up on the other.

Rouhani, “Syria has no military solution and should be resolved politically”

No country has the right to decide on the future of Syria that belongs to the Syrian people, Rouhani told reporters in Ankara on Wednesday after a trilateral meeting of the presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey. Maintaining Syria’s territorial integrity, national sovereignty and unity and independence should be appreciated by everyone as a major demand of the Syrian people, he added. “In view of the Islamic Republic of Iran, … Syria (crisis) has no military solution and should be resolved politically. We should all help to bring the war to an end.”

Rouhani went on to say that it would be a great celebration day for the region when the war in Syria ends, terrorists leave the region, Syrian refugees return home and the Syrian people can determine their fate and future in a free election. The Iranian president further hailed the efforts made by Iran, Russia and Turkey on the path of fighting terrorism and establishing ceasefires in Syria, including through the Astana peace talks and the trilateral summits in Sochi and Ankara.

Macedonian Foreing Minister Nikola Dimitrov visits Paris

Today the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia, Nikola Dimitrov, in the framework of his first working visit to the French Republic, met with his French host, Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drion. At the meeting, the Ministers expressed satisfaction with the mutual efforts for introducing new dynamics in the political dialogue, which is in function of enriching the overall bilateral cooperation between the Republic of Macedonia and the French Republic. In the conversation, Minister Dimitrov stressed the importance that the Republic of Macedonia attaches to relations with France, both bilaterally and in the context of the European and Euro-Atlantic future of the Republic of Macedonia.

He confirmed to his French counterpart that the Republic of Macedonia is trying, through its pro-European foreign policy action, to be a serious and credible partner to the international community. MFA Dimitrov also met his French counterpart with the reform activities undertaken by the Government in the light of the European and Euro-Atlantic integrations, but also in a wider context, in the context of the role of the Republic of Macedonia, as a catalyst for regional cooperation and stability. Minister Dimitrov also met with Philip Etienne, a diplomatic adviser to French President Emanuel Macron, where he argued why the Republic of Macedonia is the opportunity for joint success in the Balkans this year.

Japanese Foreign Minister protests USA over project on Shikotan

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono says Japan has lodged a protest with both Russia and the United States over a joint project on one of 4 Russian-controlled islands claimed by Japan. Last month, Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of the Sakhalin region in Russia’s Far East, announced a plan to build a diesel power plant on Shikotan Island by September. He said a large US machinery firm was involved in the project. So Kono said economic activities by a company from a third country on the islands claimed by Japan are incompatible with the government’s stance. He called the activities extremely regrettable.

He added that he will try to resolve the territorial dispute and conclude a peace treaty between Japan and Russia. The Japanese government claims the 4 islands controlled by Russia. The government maintains they are an inherent part of Japan’s territory and were illegally occupied after World War Two.

The Electoral Code will change due to the SEC

After voting in the Parliament for the confidence of the Government, the government and the opposition will implement the agreement reached between Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and VMRO-DPMNE leader Hristijan Mickoski for a new composition of the State Election Commission. It will be the first test for the reform package, which brings opposition MPs back to parliament, although the change in the election of SEC members was not on Reinhard Priebe’s list, but an independent decision by political leaders in the country. According to the information, it is a request by VMRO-DPMNE, which SDSM accepted only to satisfy the opposition and to force it to return the Parliament in order to pass the reform laws, which require a two-third majority. 

Accordingly, amendments to the Electoral Code should now be adopted in order to change the SEC concept. The model that was agreed during the negotiations in Przino, when there were three members of the SEC from the expert circles and the largest ruling and opposition parties, will no longer be valid. In contrast, it will go to the SEC to function as an administrative body, headed by the Secretary General proposed by the opposition. The composition of the SEC, to be elected also in an announcement, will meet six months before the regular elections and will be in session until the end of the election cycle.

China welcomes North Korea’s commitment to denuclearization

Chinese State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met North Korean Foreign Minster Ri Yong Ho in Beijing today and told him that China appreciates the North’s “important efforts” toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Wang also said Beijing hopes that a planned meeting between the leaders of North Korea and the United States advances smoothly and that the reasonable security concerns of all sides regarding the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula should be taken into account.

North Korea’s Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho is set to visit Russia, where Ri is expected to talk to senior Russian government officials about the situation on the Korean peninsula, Azerbaijan, where he is likely to attend a ministerial-level meeting of the Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement in Baku, and other former Soviet republics in the coming days. North Korea in fact has intensified diplomatic efforts ahead of its planned summit with South Korea on April 27 and first-ever high-level talks with the United States possibly by the end of next month.

Milo Đukanović: The EU should not repeat its mistakes

EU accession is not only a formal process, continued Stanishev, it is already a difficult process that requires mutual efforts and concrete solutions.

Pakistan delegation reaches Afghanistan to discuss peace plan

An high-level Pakistani delegation arrived in Afghanistan on Monday to hold talks on the Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity (APAPPS), weeks after the Afghan president offered Taliban to join the political process. The Pakistani delegation is headed by Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua and comprises senior civil and military bigshots, including Director General Military Operations Maj Gen Shamshad Mirza. The tour precedes Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s visit scheduled for April 6, and succeeds visit of National Security Advisor Nasser Janjua who toured the Afghan capital on March 17-18.Janjua called on Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Dr Abdullah Abdullah in separate meetings during his trip to Kabul.

It was during the same trip that Ghani invited Pakistan’s prime minister to “initiate state to state comprehensive dialogue”. Revealing the details of the tour, Dr Faisal had informed that Pakistan had proposed five joint working groups, focusing on ensuring a comprehensive engagement for countering terrorism, intelligence sharing, military, economy, trade and transit interaction, refugee repatriation and connectivity.The FO spokesperson had also reaffirmed that Pakistan will continue to support efforts for peace in Afghanistan, but the Afghan government needed to reach a settlement with different Afghan groups.
