North Korea ambassador walked out of assembly in boycott of Trump’s speech

North Korea sent an unspoken message to the US ahead of President Donald Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly. Its ambassador to the United Nations, Ja Song-nam, left the room before Trump arrived to speak. The North Korean mission to the UN told NBC it “boycotted” the speech of President Donald Trump. Ja Song-nam, is the permanent North Korean representative to the UN, beginning his service on February 28, 2014. The ambassador has been outspoken about the US military presence in South Korea. He wrote a letter on March 6 to the British UN ambassador, saying “the situation on the Korean Peninsula is again inching to the brink of a nuclear war”.

ISIS must be stopped, says Buhari UNGA

Delivering Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate of the 72nd  Session of United Nations General Assembly, UNGA 72, in New York, yesterday, President Buhari assured the international community of Nigeria’s firm and commitment to democracy in the country and Africa. Buhari has said that inequalities within societies and the gap between the rich and the poor nations were the root causes of instability. The President also lamented that the pressing threat to international peace was due to the accelerated nuclear weapons development. This is even as the President called for collaboration from the international community in the efforts to combat corruption and recovery of looted funds. On the need for the sustenance of international collaborative efforts in fighting international terrorism we must collectively devise strategies and mobilise the required responses to stop fleeing ISIS fighters. This will require strong UN cooperation with regional organisations, such as the African Union, The UN should continue to take primary leadership of the maintenance of international peace and security by providing to regional initiatives and peacekeeping operations authorized by the Security Council.

EU launches Alliance for Torture-Free Trade

The EU, together with Argentina and Mongolia, on 18 September launched an initiative aiming to end the trade in goods used for capital punishment and torture during UN General Assembly. The alliance aim to stop the trade of instruments used for torture and death penalty. This ban will hit the trades of baton will metal spike, electric shock belts, grabbers that seise people by the waist or limb while electrocuting them, chemicals used to execute people and forced injection systems that go with them. Countries that will sign the agreement will have to take four action points: take measures to control and restrict exports of these goods, Equip customs authorities with appropriate tools (as a platform to monitor trade flows, exchange information and restrict exports of these goods), make technical assistance available to help countries with setting up and implementing laws to ban this trade and last of all to exchange practices for efficient control and enforcement systems.

President Radev, Foreign Minister Zaharieva Support Call for Reforming UN

The UN member states must achieve consensus about conducting reforms that would increase the organization’s work efficiency and speed up the decision-making process during crises, President Rumen Radev commented for Bulgarian journalists here the expected results of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, as quoted by his Press Secretariat on Tuesday. Deputy Prime Minister for justice reform and Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva also supports US President Donald Trump’s and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for less bureaucracy in the UN, more efficiency and closeness to the people, it transpired from a statement Zaharieva made here Monday. President Radev heads the Bulgarian delegation, which is in New York to take part in the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly. Minister Zaharieva took part in a UN General Assembly meeting about reforming the organization, organized and chaired by President Trump, her Ministry reported. Crises arise and develop very quickly, while reaching a consensus often times takes too long, said Radev. During the meeting, Zaharieva also conferred with the prime ministers of Albania and Macedonia, Edi Rama and Zoran Zaev, respectively, as well as with her counterparts from Macedonia, Romania, Croatia and the Netherlands.

As North Korea threat looms, Trump to address world leaders at UN

North Korean diplomats will have a front-row seat in the UN General Assembly for Trump’s speech on Tuesday morning, which will touch on the escalating crisis that has seen Trump and Pyongyang trade threats of military action. Trump will seek support for tough measures against North Korea, while pressing his “America First” message to the world body. Trump’s national security adviser, H.R. McMaster, said on Friday: “This is not an issue between the United States and North Korea. This is an issue between the world and North Korea”.  UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said: “The solution can only be political. Military action could cause devastation on a scale that would take generations to overcome”. US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said UN sanctions had banned 90 percent of the Asian state’s publicly reported exports, saying of Pyongyang on Friday: “This is totally in their hands on how they respond”.

Korean peninsula draws range of military drills in show of force against North Korea

The U.S. military staged bombing drills with South Korea over the Korean peninsula and Russia and China began naval exercises ahead of a U.N. General Assembly meeting on Tuesday where North Korea’s nuclear threat is likely to loom large. The flurry of military drills came after Pyongyang fired another mid-range ballistic missile over Japan on Friday and the reclusive North conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on Sept. 3 in defiance of United Nations sanctions and other international pressure. A pair of U.S. B-1B bombers and four F-35 jets flew from Guam and Japan and joined four South Korean F-15K fighters in the latest drill.

 

President, FM Go to New York for 72nd UN General Assembly Session

President Rumen Radev will make a working visit to the US on September 18-24 and will represent Bulgaria at the 72nd Regular Session of the UN General Assembly. On September 18, Radev will participate in the annual Tribute to the Heroes of the Global Campaign Against Extremism and Intolerance and will deliver an address. He will talk with US Jewish organizations. On September 19, the President will participate in the opening of the General Debate of the 72nd Regular Session and will hold bilateral meetings with counterparts. On September 20, Radev will address the General Assembly at around 7 pm Bulgarian time. On September 21, the Bulgarian head of State will hold a working meeting with US business representatives, organized by the Business Council for International Understanding, and will familiarize them with his country’s investment opportunities. On September 22, Radev will meet with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. On September 23 and 24, Radev will visit Chicago to meet with the local Bulgarian community. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva will be on Radev’s delegation.

Ghani off to US to attend UN General Assembly and meet President Trump

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani left for the United States on an official visit to participate in the UN General Assembly and meet his US counterpart President Donald Trump. A spokesman for the Presidential Office Dawa Khan Meenapal confirmed the scheduled meeting between President Ghani and President Trump. Speaking to reporters in Kabul, Meenapal said Sunday that the President and his American counterpart will hold talks on peace and security situation of Afghanistan. This will be the first meeting to be held between President Ghani and President Trump after the announcement of the new US strategy for Afghanistan and the South Asia.
