in MIDLE EAST/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

ANBAR – A security source announced to IKH News that on Monday Iraqi Air Force have launched air raids on Islamic State hideaways in the desert area linking Anbar to Nineveh and Salahuddin provinces. According to the source, “It is the first airstrike to be launched on this area within three years”, and the targets are hideouts that were used by IS militants to launch attacks on the areas recently liberated. During the airstrikes many of IS were killed and many IS secret tunnels, weapons and ammunition were destroyed. These operations are combined with those that have been undertaken to recapture villages from IS members: on Sunday, the War Media Cell said in a statement that Iraqi troops have managed to comb over 100 villages and regions falling between south of Hatra and north of Rawa, declaring the end of the first part of second phase of the Upper Euphrates and al-Jazirah Combing Operations. The Joint Operations Command also announced on Saturday that only fifty percent of the regions between Salahuddin and Anbar provinces were liberated. At least 15 Islamic State members were killed in airstrike by the U.S.-led coalition jets in the western desert, the War Media Cell said in a statement. Combing operations are still ongoing: the final victory against Islamic State could be declared only after the full liberation of desert areas from militants.

Chinese FM: All parties should strive for negotiation on Korean Peninsula nuclear issue

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

All parties should work together to bring the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue back to the track of dialogue and negotiation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Friday. Wang made the remarks when meeting with visiting French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian. It was comforting that, with the backing of UN Security Council resolutions, the situation on the Korean Peninsula was stable recently, said Wang. According to Wang, there are three ways forward: resuming negotiations, maintaining the status quo or returning to confrontation. “The most valuable lesson learned from the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, which has lasted for more than twenty years, is if all parties concerned work for a common goal, agreements then follow”, Wang said. On the other hand, if some countries misunderstand and flex their muscles, the opportunities for peace disappear, Wang added. It is important to fully implement UN Security Council resolutions and bring the the issue back to the negotiating table as soon as possible, Wang stressed. future, said the Chinese president.

A North Korean soldier dramatically defected to South Korea last week after being shot and wounded by his country’s military as he dashed across the heavily guarded demilitarised zone between the two countries.

Kosovo war crimes court ready for first indictments: chief judge

in EUROPE/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

A special court with international prosecutors and judges set up to tackle alleged war crimes by ethnic Albanians against Serbs during Kosovo’s 1998-99 war is ready to proceed with its first indictments, its president said in an interview with Reuters. The court, which could indict or call as witnesses current officials in Pristina’s government, will function under Kosovo law but operate in the Netherlands to minimize the risk of witness intimidation and judicial corruption in Kosovo. The Kosovo Specialist Chamber was set up in The Hague following U.S. and European Union pressure on the Kosovo government to confront allegations of atrocities against ethnic Serbs by Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) guerrillas. The KLA rose up against then-Serbian strongman President Slobodan Milosevic, eventually winning crucial NATO air support that halted the killing and expulsion of Kosovo Albanian civilians in a brutal counter-insurgency campaign. The now-disbanded KLA, which counts among its former ranks much of Kosovo’s current political elite, has been dogged for years by allegations that it sold organs removed from murdered Serb prisoners on the black market.Local media and analysts speculated that some of Kosovo’s top officials who held commanding positions within the KLA could face indictments or be called as witnesses.A 2011 report for the Council of Europe linked leading Kosovo figures – notably President Hashim Thaci – to gruesome crimes against Serbs, including trade in organs harvested from prisoners of war. Thaci has denied any wrongdoing.
