As Trump heads to Asia, U.S. simulates strike in Korea

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

On the eve of U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Asia, North Korea has alleged that the U.S. military practiced ‘surprise strike’ bomber runs on key targets in its country. North Korea’s official KCNA news agency said on Thursday that U.S. B-1B bombers ‘simulated surprise attacks’ on the country overnight. The move by U.S. further inflamed tensions just ahead of Trump’s visit to Asia. North Korea claims that the simulated strike was conducted in an effort to ‘threaten and blackmail’ its leader Kim Jong Un’s regime. KCNA said, “The frenzied U.S. scheme of threats and blackmail, which aims to crush our republic with nuclear (weapons) continues in November as it did in October. The U.S. may make frantic last-minute efforts to block our powerful advances by shoving nuclear strategic assets at us, but our army and people are not ones to be startled.” KCNA added that the bombers’ movements only inflamed an already tense situation with three U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carriers now operating in the western Pacific. General McMaster, however, pointed out, “His trip is a great opportunity to demonstrate America’s and the Trump administration’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific and our efforts to strengthen longstanding American alliances and expand new partnerships”, Experts believe that Trump’s meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping will likely be key to the tour. Trump is expected to pressure China on multiple fronts, including the most contentious issues – North Korea. McMaster said, “China is definitely doing more but obviously it is not enough until all of us achieve denuclearization.

China’s economy to steer clear of rapid slowdown in new era: economist

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

The Chinese economy will be able to steer clear of rapid declines of GDP growth during the new development era, a prominent economist has said, but ruling out the possibility of an immediate rebound. “After getting rid of the downward trend, the growth will level out in the future, rather than accelerating quickly”, Liu Yuanchun, vice president of Renmin University of China, said when addressing a forum. The economy showed strong resilience in the first three quarters as reforms created fresh momentum, with GDP expansion holding steady at 6.9 percent year on year. Services and consumption played a greater role in driving growth, and high- end manufacturing and IT sector witnessed booming increases. His remarks came after a report to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China said the economy is in “the new era, a pivotal period for transforming the growth model, improving economic structure, and fostering new drivers of growth”. China has been transitioning from a phase of rapid growth to a stage of high-quality development, according to the report. Liu said that risks in the economy would be eased in the new era but attention should remain. “The downward cycle in the financial sector will likely be more complicated than predictions, which will lead to a very different deleveraging process compared with the European and U.S. market”, Liu said. “It is not the time to sound the all clear yet”.

North Korea has huge plans for nuclear test, Trump irked

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

A day after U.S. President Donald Trump turned his anger due to failed efforts in subduing North Korea’s nuclear ambitions from China to Russia – Pyongyang announced its own plans.Trump, on Wednesday, said that Russia was having a negative impact on U.S. efforts to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons while China had been helpful. In a televised interview, Trump said it would be easier to resolve the North Korea nuclear issue if the United States had a better relationship with Russia. Meanwhile, North Korea, which has already tested a series of weapons this year, including the successful test of its sixth and most powerful nuclear bomb so far – issued its own warning on Thursday morning. Ri Yong Pil, a senior diplomat in North Korea’s Foreign Ministry, warned that the U.S. should take the hydrogen bomb threat from Kim Jong Un seriously adding that the foreign ministry was aware of plans for a launch and urged Washington to prepare itself. He said, “The foreign minister is very well aware of the intentions of our supreme leader, so I think you should take his words literally.” Last week, amid the heated war of words being exchanged between Trump and Kim Jong Un, CIA chief Mike Pompeo said that North Korea could be only months away from gaining the ability to hit the United States with nuclear weapons. On November 3, Trump is scheduled to depart on a trip during which he will visit Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines. Meanwhile, Trump, who has pressed China to help rein in North Korea’s nuclear program so far since January, turned the heat on Russia on Wednesday. He said, “I think we could have a good relationship with Russia. I think that North Korean situation would be easier settled.”As North Korea’s sole major ally, China accounts for more than 90 percent of trade with the isolated country and on Thursday, Trump said in a tweet that he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping and the conversation included North Korea.Russian President Vladimir Putin warned last week that North Korea must not be “backed into a corner” and urged dialogue to end the nuclear standoff with the U.S.

Renewed Saudi-Iraq ties ‘to rival Iran’s influence’

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

A recent warming of ties between Saudi Arabia and Iraq could signal a move away from Iran’s influence over Baghdad, analysts say, but with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. Saudi Arabia and Iraq inaugurated a coordination committee and signed a number of agreements. The developments come after years of tension between Saudi Arabia and Iraq. In a statement addressing the inauguration of the committee, King Salman of Saudi Arabia said the body presents the two countries with a “historic opportunity to build an effective partnership to achieve common aspirations”. As part of the agreements, Saudi Arabia will open a consulate in Iraq, relaunch airline flights between the two countries, open the border, and jointly develop ports and highways. The two nations also agreed to allow Saudi investment in Iraq, study a trade exchange area, and review customs cooperation agreements.

Experts fear North Korea could wipe out U.S. in one strike

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

After creating a widespread fear psychosis related to a nuclear and a biological war being plotted by North Korea, now a completely different kind of fear has emerged from the reclusive nation. Experts have now revealed that an electromagnetic pulse attack by Pyongyang could be so devastating that it could wipe out 90 percent of the U.S. population. Experts warned the U.S. Congress on Wednesday that North Korea could wipe out America’s electricity and food supplies, and destroy its entire population with an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack. EMPs, that are transported via warheads above the earth’s atmosphere, release rapid and invisible bursts of electromagnetic energy that could jam an entire continent’s entire power grid, phone lines, and internet. A congressional report titled ‘North Korea Nuclear EMP Attack: An Existential Threat’ stated that since EMPs spread in a radius of hundreds or even thousands of kilometres, such attack wouldn’t require as much accuracy to hit a target than other weapons such as intercontinental ballistic missiles. The congressional report added, “After massive intelligence failures grossly underestimating North Korea’s long-range missile capabilities, number of nuclear weapons, warhead miniaturization, and proximity to an H-Bomb, the biggest North Korean threat to the U.S. remains unacknowledged nuclear EMP attack”. The report warned finally that North Korea could launch an EMP attack on the U.S. “by launching a short-range missile off a freighter or submarine or by lofting a warhead to 30 kilometres burst height by balloon, or an EMP attack might be made by a North Korean satellite, right now. “The former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich has repeatedly warned that the U.S. was unprepared for such an attack”.

China-North Korea fuel trade falls ahead of Trump visit

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

China’s fuel imports and exports to North Korea dropped significantly in September from a year earlier, the latest data shows. Figures from Chinese customs show China imported 511,619 tonnes of coal from North Korea during the month, down 71.6 per cent from the year before. Meanwhile, it exported 90 tonnes of petrol to the country, down 99.6 per cent, and 16 tonnes of diesel, a drop of 91.8 per cent. The release of the figures on Tuesday comes at a sensitive time in Sino-US relations, with US President Donald Trump expected to visit China next month. US officials said Trump would use the trip to pressure Beijing to exert greater influence on North Korea, however, any such efforts could backfire. Some observers said Beijing would resist pressure and respond by telling Trump to stop threatening Pyongyang with military force. Shi Yinhong, an international relations expert at the Renmin University in Beijing, said China had almost exhausted what it could do regarding sanctions on North Korea and had limited choices if Trump were still unsatisfied. “Compared to the past, China now cannot recede a lot regarding the North Korea issue. Beijing might [move a bit on trade] to please Washington, aiming to ease China-US frictions”. Sun Xingjie, a North Korean affairs expert from Jilin University, said Beijing had no other options to sanction North Korea, barring a full oil embargo – a move that would risk angering the regime of Kim Jong-un and might even bring the whole region to war. “Beijing and Washington have completely different solutions to the North Korea issue, but what Washington has called for might not be suitable for Beijing, especially the military options”, Sun said. “Cooperation on the North Korea issue might not be the central theme during the talks, rather, it’s the differences that will be heatedly discussed. Beijing will ask Trump not to threaten the Kim regime with military options and try to persuade Trump back to the negotiating table”, Shi said.

Partnership between China, South Asian nations can make better Asia: experts

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Connectivity of China with South Asia under the Belt and Road Initiative can only make a better Asia, experts said here on Tuesday. Addressing a two-day seminar entitled International Conference on South Asia – China connectivity for Regional Economic Social Development, which was organized by Kathmandu School of Law (KSL), experts stressed on finding the common grounds and visions for partnership between South Asian nations and China. “South Asia is geographically connected but psychologically divided. All the South Asian countries including India should move ahead together with China to realize the dream of creating the Asian Century”, Dr. Yubaraj Sangroula, head of the KSL said in the inaugural ceremony. The China- proposed Belt and Road Initiative has created new hopes in the whole region, an academician from Bangladesh, Zakir Hossain, said in his speech. “It is not just about connectivity of roads or seas but connectivity of economies which can improve the lives of people of the whole region”, said Hossain, the former dean of Bangladesh’s Chittagong University. Muhammad Amir Rana, director at Pakistan’s Pak Institute of Peace Studies, said South Asian nations should learn how China transformed its economy. “China’s success story can lead other nations to reform or modernize the economy. We should follow their vision of change to achieve socio-economic development. On the occasion, Prof. Chen Xiaochen of China’s Renmin University said the Belt and Road Initiative is all about common development through international cooperation. “Cooperation is the major need today which can fill the gap of development in the world”.
