Egypt, Italy cooperate for fighting illegal migration

Egypt and Italy are cooperating for training cadres from African countries on fighting illegal migration. A workshop of a training program was held in the Egyptian Police Academy. The workshop was attended by Tunisia, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, Senegal, Niger, Morocco, Mali and other African countries along with Spain and France.

The plan pipeline for transporting gas from Israel to Italy

The Minister of National Infrastructure, Energy and Water, Yuval Steinitz told the management and board of the company Israel Gas Lines Company that it was considered the possibility of making it participate in the construction of a gas pipeline to export gas to the ‘Europe. Society plays a significant role in continuing to promote the connection of the economy to natural gas, and the involvement of a government project in this project is believed to increase the chances of it materializing. The plan to transport gas from Israel to Italy via Cyprus and Greece involves the construction of a subsea pipeline of 2,100 km, making it the longest submarine gas pipeline in the world. The construction cost, expected to be completed in 2025, is estimated at 25 billion NIS.

Military honours for Hafter in Rome defence ministry talks

The Libyan National Army’s Field Marshall Khalifa Hafter had talks in Rome today on military issues including possible cooperation, first with Italian chief of defence staff General Claudio Graziano and then with Italian defence minister Roberta Pinotti.He also met with Italian interior minister Marco Minniti who earlier this month had invited him to the Italian capital. The meeting with Graziano focused on possible collaboration in the LNA’s fight against terrorism and the battle against smuggling. The two talked also about immigration and the Italian military’s support for the Libyan coast guard as well as the role of the Italian field hospital in Misrata.The atmosphere was much more collaborative and cordial than had been the case before the Minniti’s icebreaking visit to Benghazi earlier this month.After the session with Graziano, Hafter had an hour-long meeting at Palazzo Baracchini with Pinotti in. She is reported to have stressed upon the field marshal that Rome fully supported the efforts of UN special envoy Gassam Salamé to make the Libyan political dialogue work and believed that there could be no military solution to the country’s crisis. For his part, Haftar is reported as thanking the Italians for providing treatment in Italian hospitals for LNA soldiers wounded in the fight against the militants. Although there was no announcement about it, Minniti later divulged that he too had had talks with Hafter during the day.

Italy donates 1 million euros to conflict-ridden areas in Libya

The UNICEF said on Friday that Italy had donated € 1 million to support a multi-sector program in Libya.The program will focus on children and their families in the conflict-hit regions including Sabha and Benghazi. According to a statement by the UN Support Mission in Libya, the contribution will assist in creating child-friendly spaces to enable the affected children to continue their education in a conducive learning environment, despite the conflict and displacement in the east and south.“Taking care of children, as well as their security and the one of their family, is the best investment for the future of Libya. Our commitment and support to UNICEF in Libya demonstrates the strong will of the Italian Cooperation to support the stabilization and ongoing peace process in that country”, said Flavio Lovisolo, Regional BUREAU Director, the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation in Tunisia, Libya, Morocco and Mauritania.

Mattarella says Italy doing its part alone on Libya

Italian President Sergio Mattarella, speaking from Malta at a summit of European heads of state on the migrant crisis, said Italy is ‘doing its part, without any help’ to manage the migrant problem in Libya, adding that he was making the comment ‘without any ‘polemic force”. Mattarella said that with the closure of the Balkan route, the main route is that of Africa.’The duty to work on conditions in refugee camps is everyone’s, even international organisations,’ he said.Mattarella said a simple ‘closure would be unmanageable and only the European Union as a whole can efficiently manage the readmission, reception of those who have a right to it in the entire Union, and only the EU can manage accords with countries of origin of migrant flows’.

Egypt new ambassador to Italy heads to Rome

Egypt’s new ambassador to Italy, Hesham Badr, left Cairo for Rome on Friday morning. On Wednesday, the new Italian ambassador to Egypt, Giampaolo Cantini, assumed his duties in Cairo. On Thursday, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Italy’s Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano met in London, and stressed the importance of the strengthening the two countries’ cooperation in political, economic, and regional security areas. Cantini would be filling a position that had been vacant since April 2016, when the Italian foreign ministry recalled the ambassador citing concerns over transparency from Egyptian investigators looking into the murder of Italian student Giulio Regeni in Egypt earlier that year. Alfano also said that sending Cantini to Cairo is intended to consolidate the political and ethical obligations of the Italian government regarding the search for the truth about the murder of Regeni. Italy is the fifth-largest foreign investor in Egypt. The two countries also closely cooperate on finding a peaceful resolution for the conflict in Libya, as well as combatting irregular migration from north Africa to European shores.

Alfano calls Salamé on Libya

Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano spoke with the UN Special Representative to Libya, Ghassam Salame’, on Tuesday. During the conversation the diplomats discussed the priorities for the political process leading to the stabilisation of Libya. Alfano reportedly reiterated Italy’s full commitment to ensuring the unity of Salame’s action, avoiding dispersion and maintaining unity within the international community in support of the negotiations underway. The minister also asked that the UNHCR and IOM become fully operational in Libya as quickly as possible to ensure the respect of migrants’ rights.
