in AFRICA by

The head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Abbas Kamel received on Friday a delegation from the Hamas group led by Ismail Haniyeh. It included Khalil Al-Haya, Rouhy Moshtaha, and Fathi Hammad. They discussed with Egyptian officials about security and humanitarian conditions in Gaza in order to set a special timetable concerning the reconciliation agreement signed by the two main Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah. The Egyptian General Mohamed Ibrahim said that the current difficulties are linked to the decision of the mechanisms of the work of the Palestinians ministries, but also to the tension between the groups’ leaders. He added that the Egyptian mediation is important for the implementation of the agreement as the groups flexibility.

Hamas has spent money on war instead of Gaza’s development

in DEFENCE/MIDLE EAST/POLITICS by

After the release of the report that denounced the critical situation in Gaza, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said that if Hamas had invested the 260 million dollars spent in tunnels of terror and missiles on its water and sanitation systems, the Gaza Strip it would be in a much better situation. On the contrary, it appears that Hamas has continued to try to build tunnels and test rockets, including three missiles launched overnight in the Mediterranean Sea. The best way to solve the humanitarian situation in Gaza is that Hamas stops spending money on the war and killing people and instead invests in the development of Gaza. Liberman went on to denounce Iran for providing Hamas and Islamic Jihad with $ 100 million a year for terrorism. To counter the terrorism of these actors, Israel has a six-point strategic plan that includes: the return of missing soldiers and prisoners, the destruction of all the terror tunnels by the end of the year, the completion of an underground barrier between Israel and Gaza, the response to all rockets and mortar fire, the strengthening of communities on the outskirts of Gaza and the demilitarization and restabilization of Gaza.

Hamas approves prisoner swap deal proposed by Egypt

in AFRICA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Hamas has agreed on an exchange of prisoners with Israel, a deal suggested by Egypt two weeks ago. However, the Israeli government has reportedly rejected the prisoner swap. Israeli media quoted an Israeli source describing Senwar’s announcement as “a manoeuvre”.The agreement between Hamas and Egypt over the deal reached Israel through an Israeli official who is charged of negotiations, Ma’an added. Senwar did not reveal the details of the deal, but according to reports by Palestinian newspaper Al-Istiqlal and Israeli newspapers Haaretz and The Times of Israel, it would mean that Israel release 39 bodies of Palestinians who were killed in 2014, including 19 Hamas members, and in return Hamas would give information on the missing Israeli soldiers that the group allegedly holds. The second phase of the deal would be the release of 58 Palestinians who were rearrested in 2014 after they were released in 2011 in a prisoner swap for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, a group that is known in the Arabic media as “the Shalit captives”. The third and last phase would be the start of negotiations between Hamas and Israel on a further prisone swap, with Egyptian mediation.

Hamas-Fatah reconciliation process shows growing Egyptian influence in region

in AFRICA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

Signs of reconciliation be-tween rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah would signal long-await-ed Palestinian unity, an end to Hamas’s isolation and improved humanitarian conditions in Gaza along with re- establishing Egypt as a force on the regional scene, experts said.“This would prove that Cairo still has leverage over the Palestinian file, something that was strongly contested by a number of regional powers”, said Egyptian MP Samir Ghattas. The deal would allow for Pales-tinian Authority control over the Rafah Crossing between Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip, resolve the problem of overdue salaries for thousands of admin-istrative workers in Gaza and re-store electricity supplies to Gaza. It would, necessarily, pave the way for legislative and presidential elections in the Palestinian territories. However, despite Hamas’s announcement and Abbas’s welcome of the move, success hinges on complex issues related to power-sharing. Similar previous rec-onciliation efforts, most recently in 2014, failed after disagreements over the details.
