France: Macron looks for friendship with China

in EUROPE/POLITICS by

Emmanuel Macron arrived in China with about fifty business leaders, including the leaders of Areva, Airbus, Safran and EDF. He stressed the importance of the “strategic partnership” with China: “We must structure relations in terms of intellectual property, structure greater access to the Chinese market, allow Chinese investments in France and open data reciprocally. . ”
France and China have signed an agreement providing for the construction by Areva of a nuclear fuel reprocessing center in China. This colossal project, providential for the French group specializing in the civilian atom, is valued at least ten billion euros.
This “Memorandum for a Trade Agreement” paves the way for 10 years of delicate negotiations between Areva and its Chinese partner CNNC, state giant of the civil atom.
Emmanuel Macron announced that the EPR reactor, built by EDF in southern China, should start in about six months.
Macron said that “”China is pursuing its economic development strategy and, given the size of this market, it has an impact on the whole globalization. The duty of France is to understand these movements. This supposes a strong France: if France does not know how to adapt, it will be erased.”

France: Macron, Erdogan and the same strategic interests on Syria

in DEFENCE/EUROPE/POLITICS by

More and more diplomatically isolated, the Turkish president must reconnect with the countries of the European Union. He wants to be an indispensable partner of the Twenty-eight on the issue of migration and regional crises. “We want to increase the number of our friends and reduce that of our enemies,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan recently. “On regional issues and in the bilateral field, the steps we have taken with Emmanuel Macron are going in the right direction” added Erdogan.
While the personalities of the two leaders are opposed in many ways, there are also common strategic interests and convergences on many regional issues, starting with Syria. Erdogan believes, like French diplomacy, that Bashar Al-Assad can not ultimately embody the future of his country.
The two men will also discuss the situation in the Gulf and Libya, and the instability created by the US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. “Turkey remains a strategic partner in many ways: in terms of migration, fight against terrorism, resolution of regional crises,” said Thursday the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Yves Le Drian, stressing that this dialogue “demanding and constructive “must be” based on Turkey’s own human rights commitments “.

France: Emmanuel Macron meets Erdogan at the Elysee

in EUROPE/POLITICS by

Despite criticism, Emmanuel Macron on Friday received Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Paris. The opposition relies in particular on the head of state to reaffirm France’s refusal of Turkey’s entry into the European Union.
Emmanuel Macron has never hidden his plans: he wants to “talk to everyone”. Received at the Elysee, it is for the Turkish president his first major visit to the European Union since the failed coup d’ètat of July 2016. The violent repression provoked by the leader following this attempt continues with human rights violations. Nevertheless, the Elysee considers it important to “maintain the dialogue” without “hiding the differences”.
Not surprisingly, the announcement of the arrival of Erdoğan in France has made noise throughout the political class. Much of the left was even surprised by such a visit. “France must speak with everyone but welcome with red carpet Erdogan is a political mistake.”said Rachid Temal, the national coordinator of the Socialist Party.
The question of Turkey’s entry into the European Union is also closely followed by the right. They expect Macron to affirm that “the red line that we set is that there is absolutely no question of Turkey’s entry into the European Union. We are waiting for the President of the Republic to say things clearly” declared Vice President of Republicans Damien Abad.
Emmanuel Macron seems still far from giving such a sign in this sense. Although he claims to want to “avoid ruptures” between the European Union and Turkey, calling it “essential partner”, the Head of State has always been hostile to the country’s entry into the Union.

France urges China and EU to unite to protect Paris climate deal

in ASIA/PRESS RELEASE/REGIONS by

China and the European Union should set aside differences on trade and strengthen cooperation on climate change to “act as a shield” to protect the landmark Paris climate accord, France’s environment minister said. In an interview, French Minister for Ecological and Inclusive Transition Nicolas Hulot also urged China to step up its efforts towards a greener economy and take a lead role alongside France to implement the international climate accord reached in the French capital two years ago and now under threat from the US’ withdrawal. “It is China and the EU that have taken the leadership role on climate issues and they have to continue to play the leadership role in the implementation of the Paris Agreement … And if they coordinate they will be able to cover much larger areas,” he said during a brief trip to Hong Kong on Monday. The EU and China failed to agree an official climate statement during a bilateral summit in June over a long-standing trade spat, underlining their tense relationship and casting a shadow over their commitments to fighting global warming together in the absence of the US. Hulot said France and China held their first senior official dialogue on the low-carbon economy in June and companies from both countries were teaming up on various projects related to energy efficiency, sustainable cities, the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy, carbon markets and green financing. The minister said the US’ retreat from the Paris deal was not a catastrophe even though it dealt a heavy blow to the global effort on climate change and had caused difficulties for poor countries most vulnerable to global warming. In response to comments by senior White House officials who said the US might reconsider its stance on the Paris agreement if other countries agreed to accommodate Washington’s concerns over economic costs and energy security, Hulot said the Paris deal was not renegotiable.
