Germany keen on continued cooperation with Egypt: Merkel tells Sisi

Germany is keen on continuing to boost economic relations with Egypt, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in a phone call on Wednesday, according to statement by the presidency. El-Sisi congratulated Merkel for winning her fourth term as Chancellor in September.Merkel stressed the importance of continued coordination and intensive dialogue between the two countries on a number of regional issues. The two leaders also discussed strengthening relations and keeping an open line of communication on issues that would contribute to achieving security and stability in the Middle East. Germany and Egypt have been boosting economic and political ties over the past few years, with Egypt repeatedly stressing its appreciation for Germany’s support on economic and security issues, including irregular migration.In 2015, German company Siemens signed an 8 billion euro ($9.05 billion) deal with Egypt to build gas and wind power plants in the country.

Egypt’s Sisi visits Emirati crown prince to discuss relations, regional issues

Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi met with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, on Monday in order to develop bilateral relations with the Gulf nation.El-Sisi arrived in Abu Dhabi earlier on Monday as part of a two-day official visit, where he was received at the Emirati capital by Mohamed bin Zayed and a range of top UAE officials.Both El-Sisi and bin Zayed stressed the distinguished strategic relations between the two countries and agreed to continue joint coordination in combating the unprecedented challenges that threaten the stability and the security of Arab nations.Egypt and the UAE maintain strong economic ties. In mid-August, the Emirati ambassador to Cairo announced that the UAE is among the biggest Arab investors in Egypt at $4.9 billion.Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed also expressed his country’s full support for Egypt’s fight against terrorism. Both El-Sisi and bin Zayed discussed their efforts to combat extremism, as well as the importance of the efforts of other Arab nations and of the wider international community, especially in stopping the funding and favorable media coverage of terrorist groups.

Egypt’s President Sisi sends message to Italian counterpart on bilateral relations, Regeni case

Egypt’s new Ambassador to Italy Hesham Badr has presented his credentials to the country’s President Sergio Mattarella in Rome, where he handed over a message from President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi underlining his interest in enhancing bilateral relations between the countries. In the case of Giulio Regeni, the Egyptian president reaffirmed in his message the “commitment of Egypt’s political leadership to continue close cooperation between investigation bodies in both countries, with Cairo’s complete commitment to reveal the truth of the incident and bring its perpetrators to justice”. For his part, the Italian president expressed his appreciation to President El-Sisi, stressing the importance given by his country to strengthening bilateral relations and consultation on issues of mutual interest, especially illegal immigration and regional issues including the situation in Libya.

 

Egypt’s Sisi holds bilateral talks with world leaders on sidelines of UN General Assembly

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi held talks on Tuesday with a number of head of states and senior international leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations’ General Assembly in New York.El-Sisi met with Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, and the two men discussed irregular migration. In addition, El-Sisi met with Cyprus’ President Nicos Anastasiades and discussed energy issues and Egyptian-Greek-Cyprian cooperation.The Egyptian president also discussed means of bolstering Egyptian-Brazilian economic ties.On Monday, El-Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met for the first time.The Egyptian president is also scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

Human rights in Egypt shouldn’t be judged from Western perspective: Sisi in US

The state of human rights in Egypt shouldn’t be judged from a Western perspective, President Abdel- Fattah El-Sisi told a group of former US officials in New York on Monday.Presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said El-Sisi discussed human rights with the “influential American figures”, stressing to them that Egypt is keen on respecting and boosting human rights.”The perception of human rights should not be shorthanded to political rights only, but has to be dealt with through a comprehensive perspective that also includes societal and economic rights, like the right to education, health, housing and work”, El-Sisi said according to his spokesman.When asked about the conditions faced by NGOs in Egypt, El-Sisi said that such organisations are “an important partner on Egypt’s path to development”, adding that the Egyptian parliament has approved a law that regulates their work “in light of fear within the society about the work conducted by such organisations in the past years. “The Egyptian president also tackled regional issues, including Palestine, Libya, Qatar, and Syria”.

Human Rights Watch: Torture a widespread practice under Sisi

Torture is standardized practice under president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, according to a report issued by the New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Wednesday morning. The investigation is based on interviews with people who were subjected to torture between 2014 and 2016.In a statement also issued on Wednesday, HRW writes that the 63-page report “documents how security forces, particularly officers of the Interior Ministry’s National Security Agency, use torture to force suspects to confess or divulge information, or to punish them”. It notes that the practice has become more widespread since the ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. According to HRW, torture techniques included beatings, electrocution, stress positions and sometimes rape. According to the interviewees, torture sessions usually begin with electric shocks and slapping, while the detainee is blindfolded, handcuffed and stripped naked. If detainees refuse to cooperate, the strength and duration of the electric shocks increase, and hot water is thrown on them if they lose consciousness.

Sisi signs nine MoUs in economic fields during Vietnam visit

Egypt has signed nine memorandums of understanding with Vietnam in various economic fields. Presidential spokesman Alaa Youssef said the memos were signed during President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s visit to Vietnam on Wednesday, where he met with Vietnam’s President Tran Dai Quang. The MoUs included references to establishing ports and maritime trade.According to Youssef’s statement, Quang hailed Egypt’s leadership and achievements over the past three years in restoring security and stability, adding that El-Sisi’s visit to Vietnam will give a major push to bilateral cooperation.His visit was the first such by an Egyptian president to Vietnam since 1963.
